That's what diamond was telling me. Would love to check that out. The club would be fine, too.. especially after the ridiculous nyc prices. How's an out of towner supposed to get drunk around there?! Then we found a place nearish with a slow valley.. for $2 a rack! Please, get me back to reality.

I want to admit that I am anal about accurate score keeping...including marking safeties. However after reading some of these posts I think several are making a mountain out of a mole hill.

It's really very simple....either you are attempting to pocket a ball....or not.i dont care how hard the shot is....i dont care if efren couldn't make it...if I see you are shooting.....banking.....or kicking hard enough for for the ball you are shooting at to go into a pocket....any pocket....its an offensive shot.

And there you have it.

Btw, i just left my memphinians in nyc. Spent some time there hanging out with their memphinians, too. Will have to get out there some time.

What he is saying is that people can play in multiple APA 8-ball (or 9-ball) divisions, on different nights. The scores from all their matches will be sent in to National, thus in theory affecting their Skill Level.

No idea if there are safeguards to prevent this or not. One would assume so. And why would they bother to let everyone know that it isnt going to work, this way they get an extra weeks play/pay from those who think it does help them....

I don't think he understands that 8 and 9 are rated separately in apa or that you can play on multiple teams for the same thing, as long as they're not in the same division. No biggie.

Thats why I'm suggesting what he means is someone playing in one 8-ball division on one night, and a different 8-ball division on another night. Or two different 9-ball divisions. Any score for any event that "counts" is logged and sent in, anywhere you play APA 8-ball, towards your APA 8-ball Skill Level, no matter which division you played it in. Including regional events as well.

I understand what you're saying, but I'm saying that's not what he was saying. Re-read what was saying. Like the previous posted said...it doesn't really matter. I was merely pointing out what the original person might not be aware of. That 8b and 9b carry separate handicaps.

Not when I am dealing with an ass with poor sportsmanship.

But ultimately you are probably right. I will mark them as it goes against you (increases your perceived skill level) and then I will just make note on the sheet how big of an ass and poor of a sportsman you are.

Doesn't matter I'm a 9 anyways. I would also welcome your comments. It would give everyone who read them a good laugh (at both sides)

The comprehension part was based on you saying "trying to make". At that point it really doesn't matter because if you are trying to make a ball, then it is not defense regardless of how hard of a shot it is.

It would be no different if I have a ball sitting in a corner pocket wide open and I have one that is "stuck" behind one of yours in another. If I just happen to get a leave on the stuck one that allows me to break it out and possibly make it by a bank, tough cut or even a combo/carom shot and I take that, it does not equate to a defensive shot if I miss because I was trying to make it. It was a good 2 way shoot, just as your 5 rail example. If I make it, I continue. If I don't, I am in a better position (hopefully).

Actually, here's the way it SHOULD be scored (but probably isn't most of the time, because it requires quite a bit of knowledge that the typical score keeper doesn't possess). If a shot has both an offensive and a defensive aspect to it (a two-way shot), then it should be scored according to which aspect was SUCCESSFUL, with priority going to the offense. If the ball is pocketed, no defense no matter how the table lies afterwards. If the ball is missed but the defensive portion of the shot worked out as intended, defense. If both the offensive and defensive portions of the shot failed, no defense.

Then, in the five-rail example, a miss would be defense UNLESS you accidentally leave a make-able shot on the 8.

The real difficulty in scoring this is determining which outcomes were intentional and which were not. Unless announced beforehand, it will always be a judgment call. Note that this doesn't preclude the defensive shot where you unintentionally pocket one of your balls - that is still marked as defense.

I actually agree that is should be scored that way but according to the actual interpretation I quoted from the APA's own website since I was trying the shot it was not a safety.... My primary intent was to pocket the ball... It could be argued if that really was my intent I would not have shot the 5 railer but I didn't write the interpretation on a player trying a shot no matter how impossible not being a safe... There is no verbiage saying the impossible shot was the only one available....

I would 100% score this as a safety unless the ball falls using our scoring rules...
