Playing with a strange cue

Let me relate my experience of how easy it is for a great player to get up to speed with a different cue. I was in Norman ,Ok about 20 years ago looking to sell some cues at a local tourney. I was looking at some Horn cues and commented that I never liked the way they felt. This is not a knock on Verl so please do not tear my head off.I have had 5 or 6 Horn cues, looked good but did not work for me. At any rate an older guy heard me and said must be because I couldn't play.I decided to step up.
We made a small bet,$100,race to 7. The game was he uses my Horn cue for the match,9 ball winner breaks.I was playing
my best back then, not great but a solid b player. I jump out 4 to 0 and he is hitting a gear and got back in it. I managed to win 7 to 6 but I think if we would have had a longer race I would have lost pretty bad. The older guy I was playing..Norm Hitchcock.

Far as I'm concerned, you just illustrated that there really is no "best cue". It really does depend on what a player likes and the feel he or she prefers. That said, hand SVB the Horn cue you like least, and he'd still beat you...despite not having his cuetec. ;)

Only thing that proves is that ol norm could dab em.

You have 2 players, on is likely an all time great, the other is a comparative hack. Unless there is some significant flaw with the cue, the lesser player is never gonna beat the better.

I wouldn't think I'd be able to beat svb if he changed cues every shot and I played with my diveney exacto model.

I think a player does have to have awareness when playing with different cues...gotta be ready to make small adjustments
