Please explain this to me

I have 3 butts and 3 shafts (all 5/16 x 14).

1) Butt #1 rolls straight with all 3 shafts.

2) Butt #2 rolls straight with all 3 shafts.

3) Butt #3 rolls straight with shafts #1 and #2 only. It wobbles slightly when rolling on the table with shaft #3.

Why is this?

Thanks.

I would think that there is a problem with the pin install or the face of the joint on butt #3. If all of your shafts roll straight on the other 2 butts then your variance has to be in the third butt. I would start by seeing if there is run out on the pin if not then if you can reface your joint face.

One circumstance that could explain this result has been offered above.
There are a few other possible reasons that can only be guessed at
unless one can see the cue.

FWIW - this serves as a really good example of why you shouldn't
roll cues to see if they are straight.

The problem is the facing on the third shaft, it was either not faced with the others shafts or sometimes if a shaft is drop or banged against something if can throw off the facing.

Take it to a cue maker or repairman should be as easy to fix as just refacing the shaft.

Take care

Is the joint pin on number 3 slightly longer than the others? First thought is the pin is bottoming out when connected to the third shaft and not allowing the faces to mate up flat...

Thanks is also a very good point, and it certain could be the problem.

Shaft #3 facing

Thanks all. The problem turned out to be the facing of shaft #3. It took the cue maker a whole 2 minutes to fix the problem.

Thanks for the help.

I know the problem is fixed but for my own personal gain how did you know it was a problem with shaft #3 with the info provided? If it was the shaft facing and butt 1could and 2 facings are correct along with butt 3 then why didnt it wobble with the first 2on butts?

The cue maker rolled the cue on the table, saw something at the joint, and fixed the facing. I'm lost as to why it didn't wobble with the other 2 butts. I actually rolled shaft #3 with all 3 butts to proof to myself that it is fixed. Maybe butt #3 facing is flat but butt #1 and #2 facings are a little concave, and it just so happened that shaft #3 facing was convex. Therefore, it wobbled with butt #3? I pulled this theory out of my :kma:

The felt on the table will cover very minor alignment issues. If you roll on plate glass it is more obvious when the cue is not straight. I have stopped rolling the cue cause I am more concerned with my sh#$%y stroke than the .001" shaft issue, John

Suggestion:
Yesterday a guy told me he thought his shaft was developing a roll.I scoped the shaft and looked great but when I rolled it on and off the butt it rolled bad. After about 5min I looked at his tip and it was mushroomed more on one side than the other, and by that little bit of tip being off made the shaft roll bad. After the tip was cleaned up, it rolled perfect.Goodluck
