Hello again, this one has me puzzled as well.

The tip is Ivory. The mother of pearl is real. The cue IMO looks very old and and has what looks like a hand-oil finish (no laquer). It feels like a very high end cue and plays like a dream. The only flaw is that the shaft is warped approx 5 inches down from the tip.

The ringwork definetly resembles some of the later Rich q's. I've seen almost the same exact cue not too long ago. It didnt have MOP inlays and the pearl ringwork was white. The butt cap on these cues were usually marked with rich q. Its possible it could be another cuemaker or someone had the butt cap replaced.

Hmm, when were Rich cues made? I have only really seen low end Rich cues and there usually not so great. Though they had some high end cues but they were quite fancy. This cue looks somewhat traditional. The cue looks to be a product from the 60's since it has a hand oil type finish. Werent Rich cues from the late 70's and 80's? Sorry if im off but I dont have a blue book yet. Kind of holding of till the new edition is out. I will take some close up pics of the jount and post them tomorrow.

Hi Jay,

The cue might also be a Karl Mayer. Cuemaker from Jersey. Little known, a brief mention in the 2nd Bluebook. Has been around since the sixties. He was known for wrapping a cue all the way to the butt cap. Seemed to make a decent cue...

Regards,

Steve

Hmmm, thanks for the info Steve. A quick google search didnt help. Maybe the new blue book might have some info on him.

What is the joint thread size?

Have you tried unscrewing the ferrule?

Are there any tiny handwritten markings on the shaft tenon?

Chris

I'm going to go "off the board" here and say that it might be an Adam. Admittedly the joint pin doesn't look like an Adam, but the butt cap, bumper and two-tone wrap all appear to be "Adam-esque". That would also place it in the '70's, rather than the '60's. I don't think the cap & bumper resemble Rich cues and the few Karl Meyer's that I've seen didn't look anything like this. Just to muddy the waters, how about Doc Fry - is there a penny under the bumper? He was fond of the colored pearlized plastics and big rings in the butt sleeves. Just a few ideas.

Adios,

How do you measure the thread size?

Ferrule does not screw off, at least not by hand.

I see no markings on it.

No penny but under the bumper but there is a large flat head screw.

Again, it doesnt have any finish or laquer on it plus its definitally hand made. So I dont think its an adam.

Not exactly my area of expertise. No penny doesn't necessarily preclude Doc Fry, it may just mean someone beat you to it <g>. Since you're in N. Jersey, I assume you'll be going to VF, a terrific resource for cue identification. Good luck.

Do us all a favor and take that large screw out. BUT before you do take painters tape and tape the seam between the butt cap and last ring. Photo that screw and post it.
