Hello everyone,

I was wondering if someone could appraise my pool cue for me! Its a Viking 1976 cue, it has solid ivory tip, its a 2 piece, where the 2 screw together its ivory as well, still has original tip on it, has red thread/thwine or whatever material was used in that year. I am looking to sell it. I can send pictures of it with no problem. Thanks in advance!

Post the pictures on here as many as you can from every angle. What leads you to believe the parts are ivory? You will get some kind of answer, there is more billiard brain power on AZ then in any one place anywhere.

Welcome to the forum

Without pics it's very hard to tell the value of a cue, however old Viking
cues typically do not bring much value on the secondary market.
Sounds like a nice cue, lets see some pics.

Peace

Ok, I will take some pictures tonight and post them tomorrow. So Vikings dont bring any money? Thats odd since its 35yrs old and everything is original, plus it is a Viking....I was told it could be worth like 2000, but any help would greatly be appreciated. I have not used it since 1996...It was given to me when I was born in 76 and have had it ever since.

daustin,

we look forward to seeing pictures of your cue.
I know several guys who shoot with vikings.
Please dont take this the wrong way, i just don't want to see you get into any confrontations.
When you're looking for input from a group of people you may hear some things that you don't like.
Don't be offended by them, they are probably just trying to help.

I know that this is easier said than done.

It's not that Viking cues don't bring money as much as they may not be popular enough to bring much in the current economy. Doubtful that everything is ivory in that time frame but possible. I knew a guy when I started playing who had a fancy Viking he had ordered thinking everything white on it was ivory. It wasn't and he was quite upset about it.
Just about everything collectible, including pool cues, is worth whatever someone is willing to pay. From what I've read/seen, it would have to be a lot fancier than what you describe to be worth $2000. Just because it's 35 years old doesn't mean much.
Pictures will help.

I know what you mean.
I've seen some old Viking cues that you would think are worth quite a bit, but they just aren't.
There are lots of old Viking cues out there.
The cue is probably collectible, and it has sentimental value as well, but don't be surprised at the actual market value of older Viking cues.
They should be worth more, but it is what it is when it comes to cue collectors.

Ok, sorry for the delay, got tied up... Here are the pictures and I took it to my local billards and they said it was ivory. Thanks for the help everyone if you can help me appraise this!

It looks like a Viking Z40 from around 1978. Very unlikely there is any ivory in it. You can test by heating a pin red hot and touching it to an inconspicuous place like the joint face. If it's ivory, it won't budge, if it's plastic and you'll see a small bit of smoke.

The value is listed as $100 to $220. It's on page 833 of the new Blue Book. My guess is around $100 to $125 for this cue. This cue would sell more for it's player value than collectibility.

You have to understand that Viking's were production cues and a lot were made, so that keeps the values down. This was an entry level Viking - it only sold for $40 when it was new.

I had one that looked very close to this one that I bought brand new in about 1977 for $30.00. It had a red nylon wrap. It also played pretty good.

I agree with Tate's assessment. I highly doubt that it's ivory. I saw a bunch of these in the late '70s and early '80s and none I saw had ivory. The nylon wrap and matching butt sleeve were a common Viking design.
Remember, just because it's old doesn't mean it's worth a lot of money. I've been in the used/rare book trade for over thirty years and I've handled a lot of very old books/comic books that are worth little because there is no demand for them.

....I was told it could be worth like 2000, but any help would greatly be appreciated.

Not even a thank you for my $100 appraisal. No green rep, no nothin'.

I'm going to have to start charging for this.
