PlynSets Video Thread (Practice)

One thing I would suggest is to slow down your 'on the shot' speed by taking more warmup strokes....I started to do this a long time ago and it raised my game way up...

Going to try and make some more vids of practice as well as some cheap sets with a few local players that might be heading over tonight..

Again my g/f is recovering from the surgery right now so I'm trying to make sure she's comfortable more so then playing pool. Either way I'll setup the camera downstairs during the get together tonight and will whip up something entertaining for us.. ;) :D

I'll edit up a couple more (only takes me 2 minutes to make a video) games that I already have taped, then try to incorporate some of the suggestions from here and try again.. :)

Don't be surprised if I can't make a ball after I start changin shiznit up. LOL

Don't let everybody get you screwed up too bad. Any changes you start making should improve your game immediately if they are really needed in the first place. I think you should keep your big "pump" stroke, but make your warmup strokes look more similar (bigger and slower) to your final stroke and take the same number on every shot. Practicing with only one warmup stroke forces you to pay attention to that and to your line and your intentions before you get down on the ball.

Good luck and great thread!

I appreciate the insight unknownpro. Seems though right before I always learned something I always played my worst? I dunno.. I do think your right though that I shouldn't probably stray too far away from how I learned how to play or I'm going to be pretty much starting from scratch.

Couple more Vids..

I haven't been able to play much (or at all actually) for the last 5 - 6 days as I've been helping my g/f recover from her surgery. :) I went down late last night though and tried to incorporate some of what was suggested. By moving my head over the cue more, some shots that I really struggled with before became very easy, but on the other hand (as you'll see in the 500 misses vid) some of them that were what I would consider very easy "dead" shots I couldn't make to save my life.. Kinda weird how your eyes can play tricks like that.. Looked to me like I aiming in the right spot everytime!

Link to Extra footage thread (the other video didn't upload for some reason?)

Extra Footage

Just so nobody accuses me of putting up only "my best game" LOL... This was the 1st rack when I tried to move my head more over the cue.

Very gutsy of you to put up that video Plynsets!

I've done the same thing many a time, as I'm sure have many others when experimenting with new aligment methods. Even sometimes when trying to make a ball on a shot that messes with your head.

It clearly demonstrates the importance of familiarity with one's alignment, and the importance of finding the right body and head positioning for shots and being consistant with them.

Scott Lee, Colin, Andrew, and Egg have all pointed out the same things I have noticed. (By the way you hit em pretty good.) I was paying attention to the pre-shot rountine. Its starts out great in that you grab the chalk everytime while sizing the shot up.

There is nothing more after that. I did notice that most of your three practice stroke shots you made. These pratice strokes were well defined with nary a pump in them (ok maybe a few.) But on the bright side you play with the same unbreakable tempo throughout. It's your cadence thats off.

Tempo and cadence together make up the rhythm of the game. Cadence in itself is well structured and orderly. When Allison Fisher is about to shoot you get the same thing every time. Perfect cadence. How fast she plays or the tempo she plays is also pretty predicatable. But the cadence is important and as Scott Lee has pointed out before its all about making your stroke very predictable. A little disorder or chaos in the stroke throws in unpredictable results.

Maybe part of the problem is as Colin pointed out that you shoot by feel. And when your body says pull the trigger you do. When the body says it wants to be doublely sure of that line up throw a pump stroke in. Get real analytical in your practice, just like you did getting your head over the ball.

The biggest problem is making too many changes in your game not knowing what what factors are more important than others. An instructor does this for a living ;)

Well I spent about 4 hours last night practicing the suggestions on this thread.

The main 2 things I focussed on was trying to lose the excess arm movement, and improving my "pre shot routine."

I have questions about the pre-shot routine.. As somebody else pointed out earlier I play almost entirely on "feel" so I've never had a pre-shot routine other then running out balls ahead of what I'm shooting, and I usually pick my runout (3 balls ahead minimum) while I'm walking around to my next shot.

So what is involved with a pre-shot routine.. I came up with a few things just from kinda reading around on here, but I have a hunch I'm still missing the bus as far as this.

Previously I'd walk up to the shot, aim it up, fire it and move on.. 1 of 3 things happend.. Either I didn't make it, or I made it and didn't get shape in which case the plans change on the fly, or I made it played my shape and continued on..

So in an attempt to "slow" my game down I'm trying to develop a "preshot" routine.. Now I actually walk up to the shot from the angle of attack (before I'd approach from the side, or wherever), study the angles for a second or two, take 4 - 5 slow deliberate practice strokes etc.. etc. .

I'm not sure if I'm actually developing a pre-shot routine here or just kinda killing time to slow the pace down?

What's involved in a developed (or correct) pre-shot routine?

I'll get to the excess arm movement and how that went after we go over this.. One thing at a time.
