im interested in getting one, but first i wanted to see if anybody here has used one and one they think of it. looks as it works quick and does a nice job.

thanks

I have 15 of the pocket lathe shaping systems, and really like them.

I use them in my cue display area, where I have cues "raised" that can rotate freely for display and sharing purposes.

I have one. I have both the nickel and dime shapers. The system is easy to use and the results are as described. Nothing you couldn't accomplish with sandpaper, time and patience -- just way faster and in my opinion consistent and more precise.

I use it occasionally to touch up a tip that's flattened out. With the right grit of sandpaper it can be gentler on layered tips than a willard or a cue cube. I could see where it would really pay off for someone doing their own tip work. For me it was money well spent.

Questions

Is it just the little stands, and does it include the shaper too? How much does it run?

Two little stands as you say... Plus I think the nickel shaper comes standard. The curve of the shaper is integral to design and function. I bought the dime shaper afterward to do my carom cues. Most places around $20... I got lucky in an ebay auction for half that.

You have to have enuff room to set it up.
All it does is facilitate spinning your shaft.
I put the cue together and shape it with the bumper on the floor and spin the tip in front of my nose.

Did you see how badly misshapen the tip was to begin with?
He spun the shaft and a couple of scuffs later, the picture goes to
him comparing it to a nickel.
I will guarantee you that it took him considerable more time to straighten that tip out than was shown.
But it did seem that quick and efficient, didn't it?

In the infamous words of Master Thespian.
"It was acting".

It's simple. It works well. Best of all, Mike Niver is a stand-up guy so customer service from him will never be an issue.
