Pocket speed

My opponent last night was playing most shots at pocket speed. Well every time he missed, the ball sat by the pocket for me. Thanks for the duck! It’s almost like playing pocket speed could be considered a bad thing. You miss you pay for it.

True pocket speed (just barely having enough speed to reach the pocket), is often times a poor choice due to risk of either the CB or OB rolling off their path slightly due to table imperfections.

If you’re confident that your table is level, pocket speed can considerably increase the forgiveness of the pocket in accepting a shot that would not likely have fallen at a harder pace.

Especially on a game ball shot, if I’m feeling at all shaky with my stroke, I might be willing to accept the trade off of having a bigger pocket and hitting it easy, even knowing that if I miss the shot, the ball is much more likely to hang in the pocket.

I guess it depends on your definition of pocket speed. I concider it to be pocket speed if the ball falls into the pocket without touching the back of the pocket. As in not hitting the downward deflector at the top of the corner casting.

Pocket speed keeps you alive in 14.1. You need the largest effective pocket size possible.

Pocket speed is big in one pocket.
Shoot a ball near your pocket and hide the cue ball equals cash.
