I tried Renaissance wax after reading this thread http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=394833 and it feels smoother and less glossy than the Carnauba-based Q Wax I used before.

Meguiars, Gold Class paste wax. I've used it for years.
At least two, to three times a year I give my cue a coat with a Vanity Fair paper napkin and buff it with same, when dry. Shines like a diamond in a goats ass.

Just for clarification purposes, the OP was primarily referring to the butt of the cue. Right OP?

I am more of a wax -off kinda guy

* wish I had started this crap earlier *

Interesting that it's currently almost an even race with aprox 50% using some form of wax and 50% do not use any wax at all.
