whats your opinion???? pool.......is it a sport or a game????

thanks

game??? sport???

I’m not going to argue it, but it does take a skill. Your not just rolling dice and moving a peace around a game board, it takes hand eye coordination. There are many things that some players can do with the cue ball because of their physical abilities that some other people cannot do.

HMMMMMMMMMMM, isn't any sport a game? Football GAME, Basketball GAME, Baseball GAME....Golf is a game, racing is a game....

Pool is a game AND a sport. To touch on T411's post, pool requires muscle memory also.

I mean I will get more exercise from playing baseball and golf than pool, but I am stilling getting some from pool.

If you look up sport and game in the dictionary you will see that they are synonyms. For that matter, I just looked them up and the primary definitions are not refering to the way we are using sport/game in this topic.

As a good friend of mine's signature says on another message board...

If you can't kill yourself doing it, its not a sport... its a game.

I think your approach to the game determines whether or not it is a sport. For ball bangers it is a game. For those that take it seriously it is a sport. For me and most people bowling is a game. For top level players it is a sport. For most people fishing is a recreation but for sports fisherman it is a sport. For some hunting is just hunting for others it is a sport. The list goes on and on, table tennis for most a game but for top level a sport same with badminton.
Ask anyone who takes up any of these as a profession and I am sure they will say it is a sport. To say otherwise is unsportsmanlike. (So those of you who think it is a game and not a sport - You are BALLBANGERS LOL.)

Well, depending where and under what circumstances you are shooting, one can definitely kill themself playing pool, LOL. :D

Call it what you want but when you practice for 10 hours a day, like I have in the past, you'll feel like you've been through a war. No, I haven't been in a war either, so lets not go there, but I have played football, baseball, soccer, basketball, softball, over the line, and plenty of all of them. But when I got done practicing for 10 hours a day, walking around that table, I was physically and mentally drained, every single time. Sport? Game? Who cares? Lets just play some and the winner can call it whatever they want. Peace, John.

The word sport has several defintions, but I'm guessing the one in play here is this, which I got straight from Dictionary.com:

Sport
An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively

The reason the debate exists is the physcal exertion part. Rude Dog is absolutely right in noting a long practice involves both physical and mental exertion. Still, the kind of stamina needed in a long practice is rarely needed in actual competiton. Though there are exceptions, most titles are won by one of the last four on the winners side. Physical exertion is a non-issue on the winner's side, where you play for a couple of hours, and then get a long break before you play again.

Still, pool is a sport in so many ways. I'm certainly not going to call pool a game if it means I have to match up even with OldHasBeen. I suspect those who suggest pool is both a sport and a game are right.

Game now. Sport Later

Since it lacks structure/control/dollars in the pro ranks, its not a true sport yet. It does have all the elements that are needed to be a sport. Don't you have something better to post?

although we are pretty avid skydivers as well... hehe

I play very seriously when it comes to pool, and I can see both sides of the fence in this debate.

I still think it's a game, yet one that people can master with dedication. I play for $$$ quite frequently, yet I still believe it's a game.

In my mind a sport has to have A Defense & A Ball (or puck)....so pool fits the bill.

Racing is not a sport.

Your definition seems to leave out things like swimming, rowing, shooting, running, pole vaulting, high jumping, badminton, and gymnastics.

To me, all of these are sports.

As pointed out earlier it's important to define 'sport' first. When classifying various activities I've found it useful to consider the following value neutral criteria:

1)Sports are inherently physical and reflect repeatable quantifiable goals and results.
2)Anything requiring a subjective judgment is an art.
3)Pretty much everything else is a game.

Give the above we'd have:
a)games of chance == games (non repeatable)
b)team sports == games (non quantifiable goals, hard to repeat)
c)judged sports == arts (ex figure skating, trick shots)
d)games of skill == games (not primarily physical, ex chess)

So while pool is largely a game(s) of physical skill and many rule sets take pains to eliminate/minimize chance I'd still consider it a game because performances are not repeatable. To clarify - the 100m sprint, for example, is repeatable. There are rules regarding conditions track surfaces starting and what not that make it a reasonable assumption conditions can be duplicated and similar efforts will result in similar performances (times). The win/loss record (in conjunction with the rule set) is enough to quantify the conditions required to win.

Contrast this to something like, say, the 4x100m relay where each leg may be of varying length. It is now very hard to quantify the individual components of the performance (relay legs) and, as a result, the performance is hard to repeat. For this reason I'd consider the relay a game. Again virtually every billiards game or contest would be extremely difficult to so classify as a sport.

That's not to say that sports are 'better' than games - that's where the 'value neutral' description comes into play. It's like comparing fruit. If I label something an orange and another fruit a mango it doesn't mean that one is somehow better than the other - even if I happen to like mangoes more than oranges. That's just the way things are.

I always joke that this questions comes up every month or so. So, for the first time this year, but the sixth or twelfth time in the past year.....

It's both. The words are not mutually exclusive and never have been. By every recognized definition of both words, pool and billiards fit.

Another way to see this is asking:

Is pool considered serious competition or simply passing the time? Easily, pool can be either.

See you next month.
