Pool and Diabetes

Maybe I can help some others who are dealing with Diabetes and trying to play pool and maybe no one here has it.

First off, I have been diabetic for 11 years...longer than I have played pool seriously. I was taking about 6 shots a day and having trouble controlling my bloodsugars, therefore affecting my pool game.

Today, I got an insulin pump which will make me more like everyone without diabetes and supposedly easier to deal with. It looks kind of like I am wearing a pager or maybe an MP3 player. So if you see me playing in a tournament, no I am not being rude and still wearing something like that around. But I just thought I would let everyone know and if anyone has any questions about anything let me know. I would be more than happy to help others out or educate a little. And of course, hopefully I will start playing like a champion :)

Take care everyone.

Well, I already think you play like a champion....so it should be really scary to see you play now that you will have your blood sugar under control. I think I am going to have to find some way to spike your water with sugar cubes or something the next time we play each other...LOL.

Seriously, I hope that this helps you with everything in life...and I am happy that this new technology (maybe not new in general....but new to you anyway) will help you feel better and more in control. Congrats!

Also, I think it is great that you are offering to help educate others...you are a class act young lady! (but I didn't have to tell you any of this cuz you already know I think you're terrific!) Have a wonderful holiday season...

Love, Melissa

DON'T RELY ON INSULIN TO TAKE CARE OF ALL OF YOUR DIABETIC PROBLEMS.

I'm a chiro who has taught Health Science at the community college level for 4 1/2 years and spend about 2 weeks each semester covering all aspects of diabetes.

What are you doing for exercise? Huh? I'm IDDM and jog 3 miles daily which has dropped my insulin requirement and fasting blood sugar at least 30%. Exercise increases the number of insulin receptors on the cell wall making them more responsive to insulin. Exercise increases muscle mass and vasculature therefore giving the blood more places to go. In turn, blood pressure is lowered and resting or basal metabolism is raised. More calories at rest are burned.

Contrary to what most Americans think, there's no substitute for exercise. They're all looking for that magic pill that doesn't exist. We should never have left the family farm with all the activities farming involves.

Undertake regular aerobic exercise for at least half an hour daily because you'll be surprised and pleased with the results. It'll not only lower your A1c levels but also your fasting blood glucose. Your sugar won't "spike" as much.

Thanks Melissa, I'm afraid of you, I think I need to find something to spike your water with the way you play against me :) Hopefully this will help everything not just the pool game.

As for exercise, running racks....ok that only counts a little. Walking, golf in the summer time, bowling if that counts. I will start exercising more once I get more energy. I have been so tired from the fluctuation in my sugars.

Today was the first day and everything has gone well. It is great not having to take so many shots a day. Now it is just once a day. The doc said it will be difficult for the first month or so but soon I will start feeling 100% better.

Thanks again for the info and well wishes. Take care and happy holidays.

Sorry to hear that you have to hassle with that but you get big points for posting and offering to be useful.

Useful is what it's all about.

Do undertake aerobic exercises. Hasn't your doctor mentioned this?!?!? I'm talking SUSTAINED ELEVATED METABOLISM.

Hi Sarah,

I'm happy to hear you received your insulin pump. I know you have been waiting for a while.
I'm sure you will do very well with it, after the adjustment period.

There is nothing like an early Christmas present. :D

Have a great holiday season.

JimS...it is a hassle, but it doesnt always have to be. If you have any questions let me know.

kokopuffs....of course my doctor has said to do aerobic exercise. I used to run daily. If only I could describe the way I have felt for the past few months I don't think anyone could get up and run. I hardly had energy to play pool.

Rich...the waiting is finally over. Now it is just waiting the little while to adjust to it. After that things will be much better.

Happy holidays and take care.

Well 2nd day of Christmas girl you look like you are taking care of yourself and maintaining proper body weight. That's half the battle. Proper exercise is what is recommended but exercise that runs you down is no help. Walking does work wonders, it only takes longer to accomplish what running does. Listen to your body, the old line, no pain - no gain, really is a lot of BS. And, as you know, diabetes is a very complex disease. Too complex for me to understand. The more you learn about it the better you will be able to deal with it. And only you will know what works for you. Maintain your positive attitude and hopefully the good days will outnumber the bad days. Surround yourself with people who understand and drop the rest. The aggravation isn't worth it

And I see Inside Pool has you listed as #20 with 330 points. That ain't too shabby. You passed a lot of good women to get there.

Will BD follow up the 12 days of Christmas with 12 days in summer with the ladies at the beach? And I wonder why they didn't put out a calendar? Maybe the pool world isn't ready for it?

Enjoy the Holidays,

Jake

Hey Jake, good to hear from you. Yea, so far so good with everything diabetes wise. I thought having it for so long I knew everything. Boy, was I wrong. It's amazing how many things there are to learn.

Yea, I finished the year in 20th. I wish I would have made it to the top 16, but I was close and I definitely can't complain about 20th. I will get there sooner or later.

As for the BD follow up....I'm not so sure about that. I don't think a summer one would go over so well. As for the calender, look for that in 2005. There will be a 12 month calender and a daily calender. Hopefully it works out well. I think it is a great step forward.
