Pool and Race

I rarely see black folks in the pool halls and tournaments. I know in the past we had "black" pool halls and "white" pool halls. When I think about DCC, it is pretty "white". Anyone have any insight?

I've seen an influx of Black players but we always had them. I know 4 personally at my pool room. All pretty good players except one just started in leagues. He's getting there.

I see the same amount of African Americans inside and outside the pool hall. I've never heard of any race issues. I've never been in a pool hall where they complain about race. But in mine i see the mostly White then Black, then Mexican, then Asian or Indian.

Perhaps it’s just where you live. The halls I’ve frequented most of my life generally have quite an eclectic collection of not only different races, but an extremely wide range of different backgrounds and lifestyles. It’s one of the things I’ve always loved about this game, I’ve played Doctors, Drug dealers, Lawyers, Profligates, Judges and Criminals. The most interesting thing is that in the Pool Hall, all those differences really meant nothing, it’s about the game, I love that.

My local hall is pretty mixed. I frequently see groups playing together that are mixed. I commonly see mixed couples there too. Just depends on where you are I guess.

This is pool dammit!

We are all there for a common thing.

Our game is like that movie where fighters all over the world meet on this secret island for a kung fu tournament. You can see a mix bag of fighters arriving. LOL

These are encouraging reports. What about tournament participation? Does DCC seem "white" to y'all?

I understand the "neighborhood" deal. Around here though if you want to get to a serious pool hall, you are forced to travel. At present this means 90 miles one way to NOLA. I am not sure about Mobile anymore.

There’s all kinds at Derby.
Lots of Black players Michigan, from Georgia, from Louisiana, Pennsylvania, and Illinois& Indiana.
I filmed them for a decade of Derbys

The main poolhall I shoot in, the majority of the regular players and gamblers are black. Id say 60/40 if I were to have to ratio it.

I was asked to play a race… I asked Which Race.
It is 2007 and you can still be whatever you want to be, friend.

Don't see many blacks at tournaments in general. Reasons? Who knows/cares? Why is this even a 'thing'? Is there some social imperfection implication in this question?? Gonna go waaaaaaaay out a limb and say there just aren't a lot of black tournament goers, at DCC or anywhere else. I'm sure some cities with large black pop's have more at the local level events but at bigger regional/national/int'l events they just aren't there. I've been going to rooms/events in the OK/Tex/Kan/Ark region for 40+ yrs and there's been very few blacks at any of them. Seen a 'few' really good black roadies but that's about it.
