Pool Ball Collecting.

Hello, everyone.

Just took a very quick snap of something that deserves a far better backdrop and lighting, but thought you might appreciate it anyway.

Behold the three known sizes of Aramith’s beautiful Striped Pokers… 2 inches, 2 1/8th inches and 2 1/4 inches. At the time of writing, I’m reasonably confident a similar image cannot be found anywhere else online… yet.

Best wishes.

The Cognac is a nice little touch, too.

Thank you, sir!

I wish I could claim credit for planning that, dear chap, but it was entirely accidental. I probably shouldn’t reveal this because it might be deemed a profligate waste… but I had just added a slug to my coffee.

The bulk of my pool playing was on an old Brunswick? table with orange/rust colored felt. My Dad got it as barter from some work he did at my uncle's golf club men's grill. I recall the coin slot mechanism on the side that required 4 quarters to play (a bit pricey for 1960-70's I think!). I've got an old clay (I'm assuming) ball that I would like to get to someone that may be interested. I'm pretty sure it is much older than the aforementioned table balls. I'm guessing from the shape that it is in, it might not be worthy of anyone's collection but I thought I would check with you guys in case I am missreading it's value because of the obvious cracks and fissures. It is unlike many of the number 7 balls I have seen in that the long leg of the 7 is quite straight versus curved. The ball is 2 1/4 inch diameter and weighs 166 g or about 5.8 ounces. Can anyone let me know if they can use this ball.

Hello, Laker.

Welcome to the thread, sir, and sincere thanks for sharing your story and a photograph of the vintage ball.

The clay era is not really my sphere of expertise, dear chap, but hopefully some of the other collectors will be able to chime in with accurate information.

Best wishes.

Fantastic photograph, sir!

Sincere thanks for collecting the Billiard Ball Museum sets… and for sharing such a great image with everyone on the thread.

Best wishes.

Follow up on these. When I look for sets to buy, I most frequently see them where each "card" ball is in the same color, whereas your set is more logical to me where there is one "card" ball for each color. Which is correct?

Very good question, Mr X.

Alas, I cannot offer a definitive answer as to why Poker Pool sets differ, dear fellow, other than to surmise various manufacturers have conflicting views about which game variations are more preferable.

I don’t think there is a single correct form to be honest, sir… more a case of many different correct versions depending on which game one wishes to play.

Best wishes.

I have started to work my way through this thread again! So much to learn and digest. I suppose that this is a reply to K2Kraze's post #362 regarding Tru-Line Double Circles. I do not remember seeing a response to his request for box info and sundry. Here are a few pics. the box is pretty rough but, so be it.

Perhaps of interest, there are a couple of these sets on ebay. one of them is nicer than this and listed for $75.00.

Excellent, Mr L.

Sincere thanks for sharing those images, sir.

I’m delighted that you enjoy the thread and find it informative. I’ve been busy recently in an endeavour to update and improve the provenance / exhibition cards to record my own collection for posterity… larger format with more photographs and more descriptive text.

I’ll share them all on here as soon as they’re completed.

Other than completing my set of Burt's double stripes, this set is top of my list.

As I search for a set of these, the first I have come upon were unfortunately a partial 2" set in England that would set me back around $200 including the shipping. I have two questions. Can I play a 2" ball on my American table or is that a Snooker table ball only. Secondly, what would a rough fair price for a complete set of these balls be.

Here is the listing.

Hello Mr X.

Anything around $250 is a fair price for the two-inch version, dear chap, but they are only viable for play on an English pool table.

The smaller balls wouldn’t be suitable at all for American tables… the cushion rubbers would be too high and pockets too big.

Best wishes.

This forum is so interesting and informative that I was inspired to put together a small collection. I'm playing a lot more and I really enjoy using the different sets. The table has seen little use for the last decade or so since our children moved out and I recently retired so the timing was perfect. Thanks to everyone that has made this such an engaging discussion.

I have a listing for these centennials on eBay. I can do better here for a member who's been looking. Send a PM if interested.
