Another fantastic set of balls, K2K, and one which I've never seen before so that is particularly pleasing. :)

It brought to mind the Harlequin set that often crops up online. Do you have a set of these, sir, or know anything about them? The accompanying photograph on Ebay is always so blurred it's tough to make anything out.

Kind regards,
RC.

I've just been trying to find out a bit more about those innovative Eagle Pool Balls, K2K, but apart from a YouTube tutorial haven't had much success. Their website www.eaglepoolballs.com bounces back as unopenable so I'm guessing the company has ceased trading?

I sincerely hope that's not the case. Do you have any more information, sir?

Ah, the Aramith Harlequin set. Promoted as the "Family Card Playing Games" on the box and throughout their unique rule set :)

Here is an excerpt from the actual rule set....which they touted having over 30 new playing games and perhaps the first "new" pool games created in the past 75 years.

"Family Card Pool Games are family games for all ages, played on any pocket pool table of any dimension using specially designed pool balls, playing cards, dice and the Family Card Pool Games rules. Family Card Pool Games are exciting ways for families to enjoy activities together, without computers or TV screens. For those in the family not yet old enough to actually shoot the pool ball, these junior players can handle the playing cards, roll the dice, keep score and surely help develop the best game strategies."

Without further adieu, here are my Aramith Harlequins...

For me, this thread could never be complete without a Casino Set (simply called Reds & Yellows in England). This humble variation has been my friend for the best part of forty years.

Apologies for the photography. Like me, it's too big and lacking in focus.

Ah-ha! The Casino ball sets. I love those. I have a few of those sets in numerous color combinations other than the "typical" colors found in red/yellow somewhere....now, where are they?

We can't let all of the balls out of the bag too early now or this thread will surely meet its demise :)

Here's ONE for now:

Good evening, K2K. :)

I don't know if many would agree, but Casino sets are superior when it comes to playing Eight Ball in my view. As a fast player, an extremely fast player, the two contrasting colours help me visualise the run-out at a glance.

Rather like many of the professionals at the recent C8B world championships, I'm slower around a table sporting Spots & Stripes and all the poorer for it.

Hello, sir!

I couldn't agree more regarding your post about being able to see the table layout and runout ball patterns much easier than with the solid/stripe sets.

Matter of fact, when helping players / friends with their 8 ball game - which is mostly visualizing and developing a runout plan after the break, I'll use one of the casino sets (usually the red/yellow) and it becomes much easier for them to initially see the big picture like you also mentioned.

Here are a few other Casino ball sets in the collection:

This was an early version of Aramith's Casino set that surely (IMO) was an inspiration for Bonus Ball 99 which eventually became Bonus Ball...

This set I put together for a friend that has the challenge of seeing colors vividly, and he really excels with the orange/blues for some reason. Like the majority of this game - 95% psychological I'm sure :)

Here's a Casino Set used as an advertising tool for a well-known brand of cigars over here in the UK.

Another set from China.

I believe these were called Vigma Diamonds? Hopefully K2K will be able to confirm... and with a much better picture no doubt! :)

Hello there.

Yes, Rubik's Cube, you are of course spot-on. Those are indeed the Vigma Diamonds. Nice colors and decent diamond outline and sharp numbering font. Like most of the Vigma sets I have, they play nicely and polish up well.

Here is my set :)

It's been said "He who havith the most balls, shootith the most"

This is a great thread! Thanks for posting!

One question though, is there a certain brand of ball trays & polishing equipment you would recommend or prefer? I am in the market for both.

Good evening, K2K. :)

I reckon you have one of the most extensive collections in the world, probably second only to somebody who worked for one of the main manufacturers perhaps?

Have you ever thought about documenting them as a more structured resource, like a specialist collectors' website etc? I could be the UK correspondent. :)

K2K is definitely the man to steer you in the right direction on that score.

The ProRailbird; One question though said:
Hello, sir!

The most readily available billiard ball tray is the "basic black" ball tray found almost anywhere you look online. If you don't have a nearby favorite retailer of fine billiard supply items like I do here in Fort Worth, TX, Ebay can be a good source and proves to be very reasonable.

As for cleaners and polishes and waxes and restorers and on and on, you'll quickly see there are as many "opinions" out there as there are ball sets. Read and explore as many options as you have patience and money, but here are my thoughts on the subject of "ball care"....

What I've found, and the best advice I can offer a fellow ball owner, is to use products specially endorsed (notice I didn't say made or manufactured) by the largest supplier these days of phenolic balls - Aramith. They have two products I can recommend without any reservation:

Aramith Billiard Ball Cleaner
--- the one you will use the vast majority of the time and then only a fingertip dab per ball no matter if you use a dedicated ball polishing machine like the one Diamond offers, or if you prefer to do them by hand with a microfiber towel. Less is better. And buff each one lightly with a clean microfiber towel to ensure they have no residue whatsoever. Play on.

Aramith Billiard Ball Restorer
--- the one you would use IF and only IF you need or find or acquire balls that are in "well used" condition that when you look at them, you'd say to yourself "these need more than cleaning". The restorer is obviously a different product and I'm not qualified to discuss the detailed specs - but it does work beautifully for neglected and abused balls.
IMPORTANT HOWEVER - is to realize that when you use the Restorer, that should be Step ONE. Step TWO would simply be to use the Cleaner product to finely polish / clean the balls you just "restored" to attain that best finish and clean surface.

On a personal note, I would avoid any other products including car waxes, plastic polishes or household cleansers of any kind. Don't even think about dish soap or the Magic Erasures (yes, I have tried them all and conducted my own Dr Dave styled testing using a stimpmeter and observing ball collisions, static electricity and appearance). Nothing works as well as the Aramith products. In my opinion anyway. Again, ebay whatever you need or visit your favorite billiard supply man

One last thought on "equipment": I would avoid any ball polishing set up that has the balls making contact with one another during the polish process. The Diamond polisher had the simplest and best design so far. Expensive? That's relative. :)

Hello again, Rubik's!

Indeed I have thought about putting together more entertaining and interesting information on every ball set that I have in the collection, and actually have a small info sheet for each one now from individual ball weights to value to history and beyond. It's been an enjoyable hobby and pastime when it's not always possible to be on the baize. The next step is under development :)

What started as an "idea" for the sole purpose of being able to possibly re-experiencing my childhood playing days with my father and "those same old Centennial and snooker balls" has taken on a new goal - a purpose - to be able to experience the various games and the look and the sounds if you will that vary from one set to the next of all the great games out there - and ball sets to best experience them.

Yes - it started with a simple question I asked myself: IF my father could walk into my home pool room today, would he smile even bigger if he saw the numbered snooker set on the table that he taught me to play with when I was 7 years old because it was easier to see "numbers" than explain colors - or just have any old set of balls? I must admit, it makes me smile just writing this knowing exactly what he would say - especially if I could pull out the Centennials next - a special ball set only given to the few local "favorite" customers my father and I became part of in our small town pool hall over the years that followed.

Playing with each different set in a collection of any size, can create not only unique and special games, but a completely different experience overall. In the moment so to speak. Transports you to a special event, place or time.

And with life being so fleeting, ever-changing and short, I must get in as much "experience" as I can while I can.

Now - where's that next elusive ball set....

K.

A fitting set of polished and glitzy balls for an evening of play on this fine Mother's Day everywhere.

Courtesy of Vigma.

Yes, they sparkle like crazy when rolling at any speed and from what I've been able to tell over the past few years is absolutely zero roll-off due to the embedded "diamonds" I had specially made for my wife (as my story evolved anyway) - a gift for her through me to become part of "our" collection.

Yeah ---- it didn't work for her either :)
