Pool, bars, alcohol

everyone here is right, if you want to shoot your best pool throughout the whole night then you should not drink. That being said. I like to enjoy myself so I will have a few drinks throughout the night just to relax. I have however had many nights that I have been drinking pretty heavily and been gambling pretty high and played flawless. It's funny, I go to these state 5 man tournaments and stuff here in michigan and people are drinking at 8 in the morning and don't stop all day. Some of these same people are constantly in the last day of the tournament contentending for the title. I guess what I'm saying is to each their own.

Here's an article about drinking that SOME road players might want to know about:

Oh, Canada...

Jeff Livingston

Hey, it gets cold in Ottawa Jeff. I especially liked the comment about 'a little alchohol' refering to 15 glasses of wine a day :D Ya Canada !

Regarding the thread :

Competition - no or very little alchohol (1 beer)
Recreation - recreational use of alchohol

I was a regular drinker for years, every night, all night long.

I quit drinking a few years back and I cant believe how much it cost me. The cash was gone, I felt like **** the next day and all was about the next night of party time.

Now Ive saved money and do have a bank account,,,,,,,,,WOW

o k now for you pool players that want to see a good side of it all,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I saved enough to buy a Szamboti, then another,,,,,,,then,,,,,,,,,,,,,,well you get the idea

To drink or not to drink?

When I first started playing pool in bars, I used to nurse one drink all night. I was too busy winning games on the table. A lot of the regulars started to buy me drinks thinking they would get me too drunk to play anymore. All that wound up doing was teach me how to play while inebriated. I no longer drink, and could care less if others around me drink or not. You decide if you want to play or drink, it's up to you.

Drunk at work

Would you get drunk on the job if you were a surgeon? Probably not....
This game of ours is one of precision too. Im there to make money, ( hopefully one day like a surgeon). Just food for thought.

When playing pool competitvely on league or gambling, I will not drink.

When recreational with my friends I will drink some but still keep my wits about me.

When pool is not involved, I get smashed! :D

Ditto, except for the part where pool isn't involved. I'll play for drinks at the pub by my place. Don't have to drive and drinks are free, why not eh. If I'm getting hammered, I'll leave when I lose the table.

True, but if I miss a shot or lose a game because of a few drinks, nobody dies. Or sues me for it (yet).

Taking DUI out of the question and assuming you can control your drinking. What I see here is the question of 'Is this a game, or is it more than that'? I don't mind winning, but I will join in the fun and be part of the party. My beer is always very warm before I finnish it. I don't drink to excess but I'm sure there are people that would say I do because of the way I carry on sometimes when I'm really having fun. I know I don't need beer to have fun but I have fun joking about it or with it. Sometimes I use it as an excuse for making stupid statements just to make people laugh. It's fun. For me making people laugh is just as fulfilling as winning the tournament. Just call me Dean Martin Jr. LOL. Did you know that he didn't drink very much at all?

However, I am really trying to take the game a little more seriously

In our Bar we have 2 bar boxes in the back room and a Gold crown in the front room. I play mostly on the gold crown, but sometimes i put up some Quarters and get on the bar box. I find i have to hold back my speed so i make it a close game, otherwise some of the guy's that are drinking get upset. One afternoon a few week's ago i held the table all afternoon and now
some of the guys wont play me at all. But on the other hand there are many players in our bar that can "Smoke" me. When they start getting a little to drunk i go home. I like everyone there and dont want any bad feelings.:)

I often use the same trick as OHB and found that the sugar in the OJ really pumps me up and gets my brain going... and my game quickly follows...

I always separate serious practice and matches from just banging the balls with friends.

Sometimes it is just better to drink.

I made a mistake once, of running a rack on a girl I was newly dating (shagging) and though she was really into pool, she threw her stick down and walked out of the bar. And I did the Homer Simpson "DOH!" while slapping my head with the same hand that would become my close friend for a few months. Double "Doh!!"

<Irish Accent> I won the game, but she broke me shaft!

Well I did once ...

I think that you should start drinking heavily. It might lighten your sense of humor and give you a better disposition.

Hey, my sense of humor is as light as a helium balloon lifting a cow ...
I about 3 1/2 months along after a divorce, had the blahs, existing listening to 'Dancing in the Dark' by Springsteen and 'Don't Worry, Be Happy' when while listening to Springsteen I pulled into
a turn lane behind a couple of cars, and on the car
in front of me was a bumper sticker that said,
"If your not having fun, lower your standards",
so I did, did a lot of drinking and carousing, had
a lot of fun, but it is also partly the reason I do
not drink today, except a couple at home on
occasion. Besides, I am getting too old for too much fun anymore and pain lasts longer than it
used to .... lol

Some of the best pool and bowling I've ever played was when I was three sheets to the wind drunk. Now I'm older and all too much alcohol does is make my diabetes act up and my vision blurry.:(

Drinking

Buy a beer in a brown bottle and take it with you when you piss and pour the thing down the drain and refill with water. Do the same with every beer you are bought while playing. Oh, and never ever drink out of a bottle that's been out of your sight for long enough to be tampered with because someday somewhere it will be.
