Pool, bars, alcohol

When out for a night of pool and just playing around it doesn't really matter is you have a drink or so because you are just messing around.

When playing in a bar or some serious pool how do you avoid drinking?
What do you do?

kicking the beer habit

the way i stopped drinking beer was i remembered how bad it tasted coming back up.....not that it was any good going down the first time. now i think beer is just about the nastiest sh*t to drink. just the thought of the taste make me sour-up.

It's easy ..

I don't go to bars. (Playing Pool in a bar sucks)
I just go to Pool rooms only.
I don't drink when I am driving. (or gambling)
I just drink Diet Dr. Pepper when out and about.

Not a problem for me because shooting good Pool is more
important than liquor to me, plus not making a fool of yourself
in public or getting a DUI.

What I do is care more about the game than about having a drink. If you find you can't stop yourself from drinking while playing (this is assuming you play your best game if you don't have a drink, which is not true for everyone), then you have one of two situations going on, as I see it:

A) You prioritize having a drink over shooting your best game. Those are not my priorities, but I can't say there's anything objectively wrong with them.

B) You're an alcoholic. Find help; millions have proven that it's a problem which is too tough to beat without support.

For me, it just depends what my goal for the afternoon/evening is. If it's alcohol, I drink (and sometimes play some incidental pool), and if it's serious pool, I play serious pool. I like to make sure I do some of each once in a while.

I ask myself, "Am I mad at my money?" before I have that first beer. Then, I tell myself, "Ah hell, 1 beer ain't gonna hurt my game." SHOTS FOR EVERYONE!:D

I think that you should start drinking heavily. It might lighten your sense of humor and give you a better disposition.

What I did for over 25 years "On The Road"!

When I went into a bar that I knew had action - I would first talk to the barmaid/bartender. I would order an orange juice with a shot of tonic in it. I wanted it in a highball glass with a stirrer. When they would bring the drink (it usually only cost 50 cents or so) I would pay with a $5 bill and tell them to "Keep The Change" and keep it between us.
I made a lot of scores this way because a lot of players thought I would eventually get drunk.

Yea, lots of very good shooters play in bars, and it's a lot of fun.

That said, if I know I am going to shoot, a few beers will effect my game in a negative way, so I don't do it. And when I do shoot and drink, and my game is off because of it, it get me upset, because I work on my game. So I don't do it.

I don't drink cause it stunts my growth...and I am a mean midget on the sauce anyway.

My girlfriend would love you, she hates me playing in bars cause of the environment. I use to drink alot and do alot of drugs a few years ago, the drinking wasn't that bad but the other stuff was. So me being there one thing might lead to another what she thinks, but my team is really kewl they appreciate that i don't do that anymore and they just supply me with alot of pop lol. This year it is state sanction if thats the correct word. So yah....... yippy

Right on Gregg, i love the appreciation of the game you have and how your game is more important. People here i can tell they play alot better drinking i know thats in their heads but i know them drinking gets rid of their fears of missing and i know being a top player you shouldn't be affraid to miss a ball and this does it for them lol.

I never have drank in my life but in bars I would buy the beer that came in a can and just pretend to be drinking it then just lose it after a while and buy another. Not putting on any drunk act or anything it just looks better if you are buying drinks like everybody else, especially if you are gambling. People may know you are there to play but it can't seem to be so "all business", you have to seem to socialize a little.

When I am away from my home, and the Subject of drinking comes up be it in a Restaurant, Pool room, or Pool Room that serves Alcohol. I limit myself to (1) Drink be it Beer, Wine, or Hard Liquor.

All I need do is Pretend and Create the Mental image of Being Pullover by the Fuz, Handcuffed, Put in the back of a Patrol Car, and being busted for DUI.

Then you will spend Mucho Buck$ on an Attorney, Fines, Lost Time from Work, and Car Insurance Premium Increases.

Now wouldn't you rather Spend that money on a Gina Cue, and Justis Case, or some other DREAM item, or items for you hobby? ;)

LOL That's the same tactic that I used to use.I would slip the bartender some cash and then order a vodka on the rocks. The bartender would pour Rumplemintz (100 proof schnapps) instead and the local yokels would THINK that I was going to be getting smashed on VODKA. They never caught on to my hustle, but I never seemed to win any money, either.I'm still refining this tactic,it's not as easy as it sounds..... imo
Hmm, you tricked them and replaced 80 proof with 100 proof and wonder why you didn't win?

When playing pool competitvely on league or gambling, I will not drink.

When recreational with my friends I will drink some but still keep my wits about me.

When pool is not involved, I get smashed! :D

Just take some amphetamines to cut the effects of the alcohol, and you'll be fine.

Every time I go to a tournament I complain about the non-drinkers.

I'm still looking for my kind of tournament. I don't want the tournament to go overboard though. One beer to start and a shot and a beer every time you win a match. Every game would be way to much, but a shot and a beer every time you win a match! My goal? I think the right move for me would be to lose my first match. You get to play more matches on the loser side! I guarantee I'll have a good time which is always the most important thing to me.

Ever use the bartender trick for drinking shots?

Always have a chaser for your shot. Put the shot in your mouth and then spit it into the chaser.
