I find practice to be vary important and underutilized by most pool players including myself. I like to practice but I can only go for an hour at max.

If you get bored quickly try this:

1) play a few regular racks of your choice to mix it up.
2) invite a player that is equal or better to to practice with.
3) Just like in trick shot magic on TV you can challenge each other with drills.
4) Place a small wager to get the competitive juices flowing.
5) Record what type of drill, your progress, and other specifics.

If playing by yourself and you miss a shot, STOP! Set-up that same shot and shoot it over and over until you can make it 3 times in a row.

If there are shots you have trouble with, set them up and practice shooting just those shots.

You will improve if you practice what you are not good at. This is what you need to spend your time practicing.

I read a good post about this, somewhere on this forum. He/She basically said to setup easy shots to begin with. Build up your confidence, and then try some of those shots you need to work on. THey said to do this before playing a tourny, but I've found that it helps anytime. Since reading that post. I've started with some simple stop shots into the side, or a dimond draw/follow into the side. This has helped my mental game just as much as my mechanics.

Straight from the book titled "The Eightball Bible"

Always have a definite goal in mind. Aimlessly banging the balls around or playing by yourself does not lead to maximum improvement. In other words, if you decide to work on banks, spend most of the session on banks. Systematic practice will greatly improve yoru game

After every miss or misplayed position, determine what the mistake was. Did you aim the shot correctly? Was the stroke right? Did you hit the shot too hard? Was the english wrong?

Finding the cause of a misplay before repeating the shot is much better than just setting a shot up again and again until you make it.

When you are learning you need three kinds of action

1. You need somebody you can beat
2. You need somebody that plays real close with you
3. You need someone better than you to learn from.
