I've decided to make a getaway this weekend and I'm not sure where I'm going to end up. One of the possibilities is Ocean City, MD since it's pretty close and I've never been there. On the other hand, I might drive down to VA Beach for the Masters but due to the short turn out, is it really worth the drive?? Anyway... should I end up in Ocean City, does anyone know of any pool rooms in the area?

Thanks!

I haven't been to Ocean City in quite some time, but last time I did go, it was very commercialized and quite crowded. Not much pool action, though. However, the beach is cool as well as the Boardwalk Fries, always laced with apple-cider vinegar and Old Bay Seasoning, the way the Marylanders do it! :D

Q-Masters is ALWAYS a treat, although every single time I have been to Virginia Beach and/or Norfolk, I never did get the opportunity to see the beach. There were too many happenings in the pool room! ;)

Tough choice, but I know what I'd want to do if it were me! :p

I'm leaving for Ocean City at around noon today and will be there for a whole week. There was a pool hall named Gentleman Jims at one time but I'm pretty sure it has closed up. There is also a bar/poolroom 10-12 Gold Crowns on route 50 about 2 mile outside of Ocean City. The name of the place has changed and I'm not sure what it is called, it may be called Breakers I'm not sure. If you ask one of the locals they can tell you the name of the place and any other possible places. In addition as JAM has stated OC is a great place for the beach and boardwalk and well worth a weekend getaway. Have fun if you go and keep us posted as to how your weekend went.

You will find PHalls in Salisbury and Cambridge, but they are 45min & 1hr+ west of OC. I think it is true that Gentleman Jims has closed. Ted Harris could advise for sure

Timberly,

The only "pool hall" in OC, MD (near) currently is the bar/restaurant/arcade/pool room combination is Bogey's. It is the place that Kevin mentions in his message and changed over to the name Bogey's around 3 years ago.

They have 7 Brunswick Medalist tables (I think 9 foot or oversized 8s). Some of them are crowded near other attractions (game room equipment). When we were there in May, they had arcade bowling machines near 2 of the tables. My advice is to pick one of the other (not near the bowling machines)4 tables on the outside (so you have a place to set your stuff (drinks, cues, etc...).

Go there on a rainy day and spend the afternoon or any evening. Weekends can be pretty crazy with folks (not pool playing regulars) taking on the game. You know what goes along with this, sigh.

The equipment is maintained in an okay manner (better than some places, worse than others). Not quite a real pool hall, but it is a close as OC, MD gets these days.

There are plenty of bars (including the Purple Moose except for weekends when they move the tables for more room) with one or two bar box tables in them all up and down in OC, MD. My biggest problem with them is that they are usually too close to other tables, bars, games and the like. Crocs bar in northern OC off of Coastal Highway (bayside) is one of the best though. Even if the pockets are a bit large, the tables are nicely spread apart.

Gentleman Jim's (real pool hall with pictures of boxers and boxing memorabilia all over the walls, no food other than snack machines, etc...) gave way to an Under 21 club (H2O) several years ago. As a side note, the owner of the Under 21 club used to be affiliated with the pool hall.

Have fun and enjoy the beach.

Jerry

Gentleman Jim's is gone for about 5 years. If you are looking for action, there might be a little at the Pirate's Den. My friend Ben Green is the bartender there, and promotes the leagues as well as action and such in Ocean City. He usually works nights and the number for the Den is 410.289.5376. He can tell you where to go besides the Pirate's Den. Pool in OC is centered around bar tables since a couple years after I left there. Back when I was managing Gentleman Jim's in the late 80's and early 90's it was big action. We held the Maryland State 9-ball Championships and the Mark Giarratana Memorial every year over Memorial Day & Labor Day. Those days are long gone for OC. If you are looking for an awesome poolroom, check out Great Slates in Cambridge. It is about 55 miles to the west. You can stop on your way in to check it out. IMHO, it is one of the nicest pool rooms in America, and certainly has the best food of any in America. Make sure to try the awesome desserts. The address is 738 Cambridge Plaza, which is right on Route 50 on your way to OC. The phone number is 410.901.2720. Ask for the owner John Moody. Make sure to tell Ben at Pirate's Den and John at Great Slates I sent you.

Wow, thanks for all the info! I don't have any definite plans... I packed for the beach and I'm heading east when I get off of work. I don't plan on staying in OC as I hate crowds and tourist areas but I do plan on at least driving around it just to see it. I'm going to be looking for a beach that the locals use, away from the masses.

I wasn't looking for action in the pool room, I was just looking for something to do tomorrow night. I hate bar boxes & playing in bars... I was hoping to find a pool room close by. Maybe I'll stay between the beach & Great Slates.

I've never done this before & I'm looking forward to it. I just started thinking about it on Wed & finally decided last night. The way my luck is, I'm not surprised that it's supposed to rain all weekend.

Maybe I'll just park my rear at Great Slates and forget about the beach, even though I kinda had my heart set on the beach....

Timberly, if you can get a "good" rate at the Chesapeake Grand Hyatt Resort, about a quarter of a mile up the street from Great Slates on the same side of the road, I would highly recommend it.

It looks like a castle on the water. There is a golf course, walking paths, nature hikes, a Starbucks coffee shop on site, AND believe it or not, a couple of pool tables, though not used very often.

There is a spa available where you can pamper yourself with all of the usual amenities, and if you feel like taking a swim, they have an indoor pool and outdoor pool.

In the rooms themselves, you can enjoy pure luxury with bath salts, a ceiling fan, individual temperature control units on the wall, a thick plush white robe, and the beds are like sleeping on a cloud!

Have fun wherever you end up, but I really like that Chesapeake Grand Hyatt Regency! :)

I'll definitely have to check that out. I've decided that I'll be staying in Cambridge. I wasn't aware that it was along the water also... that was my main goal... water & sand! Thanks to Ted, I'll be staying there. I'll give the hotel a call & see what the rate is. Thanks for the heads up! If nothing else maybe I can go check out their bar anyway & see the view.

JAM,

I called there the other day for a room rate for a JPNEWT tourny on August 20th/21st. You could've picked my jaw up off the floor - $350 a night for a water view room, $300 for the other side!

Tell me what kind of rate did you got and what time of the year that was!

I have this funny story about Gentleman Jim's ... Oh yeah, Ted was there. ;)

I put a call in to John Moody to find out if he can get you a rate on a room at the Hyatt. If you stay there, you do not even need your car to get to the pool room, as the trolley's first stop is the pool room. You should check this place out on weekend nights...live bands, great food, awesome pool tables, nice people. If you can't stay at the Hyatt, there is a Holiday Inn Express, and some other hotels along the strip there within a mile or so. The Hyatt also has a golf course, FYI if you golf. I will get back to you after he calls me and let you know if you can get a rate at the Hyatt...

Ted, you're the best! Thank you for doing that for me! LOL, all I have is a 3 wood & a 6 iron and the best I can do is hit everything to the right, I don't think I'll be golfing. :D The game plan is hit the beach during the day, do a little shopping, go to the pool room, get up, go to the beach again, & drive home Sun afternoon.

I'm going to hang out here at the office for awhile & let all the rush hour traffic die down before I start heading that way so I'll be on here for a little while still.

This is boat race weekend in Cambridge. Apparently, there are some boat races going on in the Choptank River. That should be cool to check out, but you won't be able to get a deal or a waterfront room at the Hyatt because of it. The waterfront rooms are all sold out, and the other rooms with a veiw of the resort are $289- and it sounds like you need to make reservations pretty quick before they are out of rooms. :( The Hyatt is 410.901.1234. John said the Holiday Inn Express is almost for sure sold out. Their number is 410.221.9900. I jsut spoke to them and they have 5 smoking rooms left for $118- tonight, but none tomorrow night. Whatever you do, you better hurry. Let me know what you do, okay. :D

LMAO, just my luck...not only is it supposed to rain but I pick the boat race wkend...did I mention I hate crowds and the tourist areas??? I have directions to the pool room. From there I will head outside of the city and just find a room somewhere away from the hubbub that's going to be happening there. I'm not going to let these things ruin my wkend. ;) I appreciate all your help, it was very kind of you. I'll check out the pool room when I get there tonight (do they have good house cues?) and then head back over there tomorrow night. I don't have a laptop so I won't be able to check msgs or posts until Sun.

I thought I already had that deal? :D
What are you paying at the Days Inn? I just called John again to see if he could do anything with advanced notice at the Hyatt, and he said no go, as the summer is the busy season for the Hyatt. I can however, get you a room at the Holiday Inn Express for $89- a night plus tax... comes to a hundred I think. The standard rate is about $130-. Will that help?

Ted,

I am paying more for that at the Day's Inn, but my info is back at my office. I'll talk to John and see what he can do at this late point in time for the event.

And don't worry, you'll always have nuts from me. I'll never forget what you did for me in 1996 at Las Vegas. :D

Oi! Don't worry about that reference, it was a gracious thing you did in your overloaded work state - your cleaned my wrap on my old Palmer so it wouldn't make dirty marks on my white tuxedo shirt very early on a Tuesday morning. Thank you.
