Pool hall Junkies

No matter how much I love pool, I dont think I can say that a movie about pool would be a great film. A documentary about 9-ball or hustlers around the world, or a film about people who play pool to survive and make ends meet might be interesting to watch.
Love this idea! I refuse to watch documentaries, but one about people who play for a living would be great! Now, just to find someone to do it! :-) And to decide whose lives to document!

This might be the most dormant thread ever resurrected in azb history.

Must have done a web search for "pool player documentary", I'm guessing this was the only result :grin-square::rotflmao1:

I post on a computer forum and see threads form 10 years ago answered, "My Windows 2000 computer does not boot, it's a Compaq 386 system". It's usually fun to reply with "Phew.. they can finally move from the computer after waiting for 10 years for this answer".

What amazed me about this movie and most other pool movies are the hustles that they use. There is a ton of factual material that is really interesting (even more so to a non player) but yet they use the same ole same ole.

TCOM kind of got into 1 or 2 but didn't really exploit the whole thing. I would love to see just one show that dealt heavily with a hustlers hustle and their life on the road.

Chris...Not a movie, but Alf Taylor's book, "The Other Side of the Road" tells of many different 'hustles'. Good read, if you haven't got it yet. I'm sure Freddy's new book on hustlers will tell many too! :D

Since this thread got dug up, I may as well comment about the movie.

Good: Some of the characters were fun, guy pulling his college savings to go on the road as a C+ or B player, funny! Walken, great as he usually is, he made the movie for me really. "I think YOU are scared, I'm a millionaire, I lose 80 grand, I go take out another 80 grand."

Bad: All the "bad guy" acting seemed pretty forced; the pool playing they showed was horrible, another movie that showed good players banking and jumping and playing trick shots in every other shot. Geared towards the banger crowd for sure as far as that goes.

Tarrantino needs to direct a movie dealing with the seedy side of pool, he'll get the camera work and characters just right I think.

I think Pool Hall Junkies could be remade into a great movie....
...with the same cast.
...real pool players doing the shooting.
...a lot more consideration on the plot.

...and lose the gaff proposition shot at the end...it's about as goofy as
a guy betting you can't make a certain ball...so he knocks it in...
...and the guy says "You didn't make that ball, it was made by Saluc!"
Anybody who would pay on that isn't smart enough to have any money.

Yup Alfie's book was on my xmas list but apparently I wasn't a good enough boy for that so I just bought it on my own! I really liked it. I'm also looking forward to the beards next book, I got his "Banking With The Beard" and have read it several times. It's the perfect mix of stories and instruction.

the acting was....lets say subpar......the idea that the #13 guy in the world or country plays with a cuetec and can't even form a correct bridge (IIRC) is absolutely ridiculous.

Well SVB has gotta be top 3 in the world and I believe he shoots with a cuetec? And Earl in his prime was also a cuetec player. Lol

But no really I'm just having a laugh. I get what u mean. Just thought I'd specify the fact that a good player can win with any cue. Efren won with a 13 dollar cue!

But not with a black shaft Cuetec  . Director and style department over authenticity. So called "bad guy" in the movie, must use all black cue.

Allison Fisher was a Cuetec player also.....
...but do any of them use a standard Cuetec shaft?
