I've been thinking about relocating to Boulder.
Anyone know the good places to play up there?
Thanks in advance.

You should ask Samm Diep and Melissa Little. They both live in that area. I think Megan Minerich used to live there as well.

They live in Denver, not Boulder. The Colorado Cue Club is where most Boulder players go. If you don't mind some younger folks, the university has a large gameroom in the student union. There's also a pretty good poolroom in Longmont (10 minutes from Boulder).

Isn't it only like 25 miles from Boulder to the center of Denver? Not couting what, if anything, is there in Boulder, there should be many places to play within an easy distance from there.

Joe:

A good site to check for pool/billiards establishments is:

http://playpool.com/

There's a "Find a poolhall near you..." search feature that you type in the address where you want to find local pool/billiards establishments nearby, and then select what *type* of establishment you're looking for (e.g. pool halls or taverns/pubs).

It's a pretty good site to find places to play that've been open for quite a while. It doesn't get updated very often, so if a new place recently opened up near the address you're visiting/relocating to, it won't be listed, so you'll just have to resort to use the old-fashioned method -- the phonebook's Yellow Pages.

Hope this is helpful!

Joe,

I've lived in Boulder the past 15 years and they used to have "The Rack" by the University, but it is no longer in business. Unfortunately, there are no good places to play in Boulder any longer. The closest place would be "A Bit of Billiards" in Longmont, which is about 20 to 30 min. away by car. Other than that, you would have to drive down toward Denver to play at Hanks Place (30 to 40 minutes by car), Table Steaks (the same), or Colorado Cue Club (about 25 minutes by car).

I have been a member of a "private" club, where we put a Brunswick GC in a room available to members to play on at any time during the day or night. If you move to Boulder, I would be glad to introduce you to the owner of the room (just pm me).

Sorry I could not be of more help, but the pool scene in Boulder is not very good anymore.

Regards,

Doug

Doug,

Not The Foundry? I know it's kind of yuppy and the place is unshootable during a weekend night with all of the college kids, but during the day is okay. I would agree that you probably won't find any action there.

Joe,

A Bit of Billiards in Longmont and the Colorado Cue Club would be the closest best facilities. You do have to drive just a little ways to get to them, but it's time spent on the road driving and not battling traffic. I shoot at the Bit a fair amount but it's more of a sports bar than a classic pool hall. New ownership though and he has been trying to turn it into a better pool atmosphere. There are eight 9-footers and six or seven bar boxes.

The Cue Club has a better pool hall atmosphere and a lot of the local top players hang out there. They also hold decent tournaments there and Van Boening has stopped through the last two years to play in the Colorado Open. We also had Kirkwood and Bertram stop thru for the last Open.

Definitely more pool halls in Denver and Fort Collins has Match-Ups where a lot of decent players also shoot at.

It won't be hopping like New York, North Carolina, Florida, or California with the pool scene around here, but Colorado has a lot of strong players. Foremost, you can't beat the scenery and the weather out here and Boulder is a fun town to be in if you look past the politics and hippies.

Cue Club...nuff said. Lots of strong bar table players. Mark Haddad, Chuy Rivera, and a few other notables hang out there. Melissa Little is the house pro over at the Wynkoop.

Table Steaks South and Shakespeare's are two of the prettiest rooms I've seen. The Foundry in Boulder is okay but the pockets are huge iirc.

Sadly, Shakespeare's is closed. Ever since they moved to their new location downtown, they struggled and ended up calling it quits.

Joe,

What's the reason for moving to Boulder, if you don't mind being asked? Denver/Boulder is not really known for being a showbiz/comedy mecca. Nice place to move to though.

Terrible...I really liked Shakespeare's. I know Table Steaks on Sheridan closed too. I heard Danny Shea is looking to open up a new pool hall sometime soon though.

The Foundry is simply a lousy place to play as a pool player. Like others have said, the Colorado Cue Club is the best option. The Bit of Billiards is OK, but not ideal.

Boulder is a great place to live, but not a great pool town. Anyway, how you doing Derek? I see that the pool challenge thing never took off. I've pretty much moved down to Colorado Springs now, the pool scene down here is actually pretty good with many players of all levels willing to match up for small stakes.

And The Foundry could be so much better but I guess it is meant to be more of a nightclub. I suppose it's okay if the plan is to meet someone to play for an hour or two during the day. The Rack was much better but too bad that closed down. Never understood why Boulder couldn't support a decent pool hall.

Doing alright, Doug. Sorry to hear you moved as I would have liked to play you a few more times and learn more from you. I've been meaning to make it down to the Springs at some point to play in a tourney, so maybe I'll make that trek sometime soon. I would assume you are playing at Barber's place most of the time? The Billiards Museum or whatever it is?

The pool challenge thing did fizzle. Too bad. Nice idea but I don't think it ever fully developed.

Good luck with the action down there, as I'm sure you hold your own and more.

Tournaments??? You must be mistaken. There's no tournaments in Colorado Springs. Come down here anyway, I'll give you some action. The billiards museum is Antiques on Academy and Galley. 4 diamond 9ft and probably about 35 diamond bar tables, 1 gold crown, 1 centennial, and a bunch of really old tables.

ah, oh, looks like a challenge from Drew to Derek. This might be a pretty good match up.

Derek,

If you ever head down here be sure to send me a pm and I'll introduce you to the Springs pool scene. I play once in a blue moon anymore since I'm remodeling a house down here. I'm either at Sticks (proximity), or Antiques.

Thanks, guys. I'll PM both of you if I'm headed down that way. Maybe sometime here in the next 2-3 months I'll make a point of it.

The Bit > The Foundry.

The Bit takes care of their equipment, and is a pool player's pool hall. The Foundry is a nightclub that happens to have a bunch of pool tables.

Joe, I have a townhouse in Lafayette (just east of Boulder) for sale if you're in the market. :p

Meh! Lots of bad changes since I moved away. Must be my fault for leaving. :p
