Anyone know of anyplace to play pool in Qatar? I don't imagine there's much, just a shot in the dark.

you mean quatar? like the airforce base? if you do there's an e club with some torn up tables. a couple of them play ok though

No, he means the country Qatar in the Middle East.

Now show us where China is on the map please...no Bill, that's Russia...

sorry couldn't resist, that's a funny commercial

Al Udeid air base is in Doha, Qatar. There's no base called Quatar... at least not that I know of, and I'm looking at a list of every deployable location right now.

The power of the internet astonishes me. I asked where the pool tables are in Qatar, and someone with first-hand knowledge answered me in 12 minutes.

poolplayer2093: I mean Qatar as in the country on the Persian Gulf coast of the Arabian peninsula (which hosts at least one US military base). Are you there now, or will you be there in early to mid Feb.?

I'm going to be there at the end of February........how long's your stint? Have a wheels-up date yet?

Maybe we'll cross paths, and can grab one of those crappy 8-footers at the club!

i was there on r&r in like june or july i forget. there's a couple of 9 footers they're not in great shape but i've played on worse in the states. it's not bad if you haven't seen a table in 5 months and it's free. hard to beat that. That's one of the nicest bases i've ever been on. no it is the nicest if you're going there the time should fly by. as i recall like8-10 tables. i think only 3 9 footers i'd bring a box of chalk or two though. and a cheaper cue you don't mind getting banged up. the army guys love to gamble and don't seem to mind losing

If you are going to Camp As Saliyah, get a ride out the gate and take a straight shot down to Cholesterol Alley. (Anyone there will know where I am talking about)

Go through the Castle roundabout, then look for the billiards sign on your right. If you go too far, you will see a big bookstore on your left.

I forgot what the road is named. Maybe C or D ring road? Anyways, the pool hall on your right has a good 8 ball tourney. I want to say it's a race to three. Run out players show up for the tourney.

If you like snooker, just get a cab and ask to be taken to the big snooker hall by City Centre Mall. They'll know what you are talking about.

Honestly, besides that one 8 ball tourney, I never found out if there is a certain hall where the major players hang out. Almost all the billiards places have at least one decent player, tho.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes. If you are going on R&R, try to chat up some contractors at the chow hall or gym, and see if they can give you a ride. If not, it is easy enough to get a cab to meet you at the gates, and I believe a bus runs from the gates to the gym, and other places on post.

On a side note, if you are looking to watch movies in a theater while there, here is a link for the City Centre Cinema. 14-Plex! Sometimes you get some American movies that have not been released in America yet.

Ooooo. Bad juju, man!

Think about it like this. Would you still feel cool with the money if the guy went back to Iraq and got hit by an IED and killed? Or if he won from you, would he feel okay if the same happened to you?

I am in Iraq as a civlian, and I don't gamble with anyone over here, just based on principle. When people think they have a decent chance of dying, they are a lot more free with gambling money.

Heck, even when I was in the Army, I didn't gamble a whole bunch with my fellow soldiers, even in peacetime. Young soldiers aren't very good at saving money as it is, let alone without someone gambling with them to take more out of their pocket. The one time I did take a chunk off of a fellow soldier, he was a true player who was just having a bad day. We only started off at $5 a game One Pocket, and I fell in dead stroke, and he kept doubling the bet to get even. As it is, I still conveniently "forgot" the last double or nothing game, so I only took half of the money. The fact that he had a pregnant wife added to it.

I would have just told him to get my entry fee and and dinner at the next tournament, but he was an Infantry SGT and had a LOT of pride, and would not have stood for not paying off his bet. Ever since that time, I figured that gambling with fellow soldiers was just not worth it, unless they were just being jerks about it.

Not trying to harp on you man, just trying to give a different perspective. I totally do have gamble, and civilians in my book are open season. Soldiers don't have the time to keep their game sharp, so somebody who's been getting lots of table time might be taking advantage of a situation.

Stay safe,

Russ

hay i'm enlisted myself and i hadn't played for 5 months. and since we were all only there 4 days and we all had to go back to iraq after that i didn't think too much of it. we made a little more scratch over there and didn't have anything to spend it on anyway so i don' t feel too bad. i saw one soldier there selling his 3 beers a day to some younger soldier and then rob him playing 8 ball. i don't worry about it we don't have anything to spend it on over there anyway

Thanks for the info Russ. As it turns out I am a contractor, and I'm staying off base. My boss will have a rental car, and he likes losing at pool, so I should be set as far as getting a ride.

Thanks for the help, guys!
