Hey there, CueJoey, unfortunately I don't have the inside scoop on esoterica at Chris's... LOL Just know that's it's quite the place, and if you want to see some unusual stuff, with time you'll probably see it all....

Flex,

Next time you are there, can you ask some of the old timers if they remember any of this?

RUK,

Maybe if you happen to snoop around too, someone can come up with something.

Thanks either way to the both of you.

This link shows locations for "The Hustler" as NYC and LA but I couldn't find much detail: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054997/locations

Donovan - thanks for the good pics, brother. Makes it tough to go to my local hole in the wall joint, though.

Buddy of mine, who's "weak shortstop" speed, went to Chicago on business, figured he'd get in some 1-pocket action, went into one of the rooms, and could find NOBODY he felt he could even get on the table with. He told me it looked like a high-level 1P tournament in there, and these weren't even the Chicago champions. Scary.

Sure thing, will ask around. Am out of town at the moment, and will look into it when I get back.

Hey, those guys with the Ed Young cues are not bad, not bad at all. Heck, just about everybody sporting some sort of headgear should be taken seriously. Also, just about anybody in the front room. Oh well, if someone mosies into Chris's and he's obviously not a banger, he probably knows what he's doing.

What a bunch of BS...

I spoke to one of the owners, and he said that the Ames scenes were filmed there. I don't, of course recoginize any of that, so how much of that was a set, I have no idea. The Bus Card says the place has been open since 1937, even though it was not called Chris's prior to the 70's.

Anybody have any thoughts on this info.

Freddy and Grady, where are you when we need your history lesson?

Donovan...I don't know what Doc (or whoever) was smokin', but it must be good. No part of The Hustler was ever filmed at that location, nor anywhere else in Chicago. Whoever made up that biz card must be some kind of hallucinogin. The BUILDING may have been there that long (maybe), but no poolroom has been there. If you really want the scoop, go into the clothing business on the ground floor, and ask to contact the building owner. That might get you the straight story, since Chris' owners either don't know, or are telling lies...or both!

anybody played at the Pyramid in Schaumburg?

its on lake street, just south of roselle...

really REALLY nice place, probably the best i've been to in a while.

even has a shuffleboard table in the back, which excites me a lot.

they also have free pools on tuesday nights, and if your in a league you can play any day of the week, anytime for free.

that place you mentioned be close to kimble donavon, where was that at exactly?

Free pool also all day Monday and Tuesday, at Cue-Phoria, in River Grove, just west of Chicago, maybe 5 minutes west. Opens around 2PM, if memory serves. Diamond tables, probably 20 or so of them, plus some 3 cushion tables, plus a few Diamond bar boxes. Full bar, no tight pocketed tables though.

Flex...I thought Cue Phoria was out past Harlem (IIRC, the address is 70-something-hundred-west). That's a lot more than 5 minutes west of Chicago.
Did it move?

It's probably a few more minutes than 5 minutes, but not by a whole lot. The link below is the driving route from Chicago Billiards Cafe (5900 W. Irving Park Rd. well within the Chicago city limits, by I don't know how much) to Cue-Phoria in River Grove. Check out the map. It gives the driving distance as 4.94 miles, and about a 13 minute drive. It's definitely closer to the city limits than this distance. In any case, it FEELS/SEEMS like about 5 minutes ;)

Scott : could they meaning the carpenters/stagehands have doctored up one of the 2 back rooms at Chris's to look like somewhere else for the movie ? the reason i say this i have been present for several scenes of movies.one of which they turned a nice old movie theatre built in the 1920's into a hotel ! they built an elegant elevator that was never there ONLY for the movie.John Goodman was in this movie about 12 years ago.it was amazing to know that it was this certain theatre..just a thought Scott...but with U n Donovan and the others on the case we may all find out something new..keep up the good posts guys.....:)
