I am looking at getting some pool leagues together in Il. I have a wide range of people interestead and want to keep it challenging for everybody. The only way i see to do this is handicap the league. I want to make it as simple as possible for the players and the league operator. Has anybody had sucess with a certain handicap? If so please let me know how you are working it.
Thanx, Ron

Ron...Your first question to your players should be whether or not they want the opportunity to advance to a national tournament. If so, then there are handicap systems available for BCA, VNEA, and APA. APA is the only one where the handicap is still utilized at the national tournament level. If they don't care, then Randy's suggestion of the 10-point system is simple, and easy to utilize.

Ron,
I run my own league system in central IL! We utilize a handicap system and has been tweeked to favor the weaker teams in the league without hindering the better teams. I'm looking for expansion to other area. Here's our website, www.zimsrack.com. My business, Zim's Rack, is located in O'Fallon, IL. Give me a call and we can talk, 1-877-ZIMSRAK or email me at michael@zimsrack.com

Good luck,
Zim

Here is a link to the site for the league I play in. www.brokencue.com

The guy who did the site and league stats software advertises there if you are looking for help getting the stats side of things taken care of. All the league players here love the stats format and he can add or subtract a number of parametres to help you.

His link is on the right hand side of the main page. His name is Kevin.

We are a little different. We are VNEA and we opperate locally on an 11 pt system.

LCCS - I used to run a longstanding Tuesday nite 8-ball league here in the Everett, WA area. It was quite successful... getting up to 64 players... 16 four-person teams. While it wasn't a handicapped league on an individual basis, it was on a team basis. Here's what we did:

Initially, we assigned a rating to each player based on their skill level... the top 25% were assigned an "A", the next 25% a "B", and so on for "C"s and "D"s. The initial ratings were based on the officers' assessment of each player's skill level. Next we did a blind draw to determine the team make-ups. Each of the "A" players was assigned a team number by blind draw... as was each "B", "C" and "D" player... thus each team had one player of each of the four ratings.

Every week during the session, each player from one team would play each of the four players from the other team. Team stats (matches won/lost) were kept because at the end of the session, cash payouts were made to every team in the league... and the payout structure tended to be quite flat. And for a given team, their team payout was split evenly four ways. Thus, every team and every player got some of their money back. During a session, every team played each of the other teams once (e.g., a 13 week session for 14 teams)... and it all worked quite well.

For the league's 2nd session, we used each persons' Won/Lost percentage from the first session as the basis for their rating for the upcoming session. Thus if a player was initially assigned a "B" rating... and ended up in the top 25% at the end of that first session... he would become an "A" player for the 2nd session.

For the 3rd session and on, we used each player's average winning percentage.

For a brand new player coming into the league, the officers would watch that person shoot a couple of games with someone known... and then assign the new player their starting rating.

The nice thing about this format... no individual handicapping and the problems associated with sandbagging. I should mention that we also paid the Top Ten... and also had a $20 prize for the Most Improved, 2nd Session and for the Most Improved, All Sessions.

Questions?... fire away.

Gregg, it is people llike you that give pool a bad name. If you have no suggestions or have nothing nice to say, why do you keep your comments to yourself.

No way you can consider O'Fallon as "central" IL. Y'all even have a bit of an accent way down thar. LOL :) I'll have to look you up next time I'm down that way (which is quite a bit, B-in-L lives between Aviston and Breese). That is after I play Stonewolf, of course :D My B-in-L's wife works in either O'Falllon or Fairview Hts. (can't remember which), and he works in Salem  , so they tried to be a bit between the two (he got the raw end of that one). Love that part of the state....I'm sure we'll be down a few times before summer's over. We usually play Governors Run while I'm there too (he's a member), so, if you are into golf at all....

Sorry if I came off wrong. I thought you would see through my sarcasm with my :)

I just thought that you got lots of good responses already. Some of the league formats work really well, if that's what you want to go by...

Good luck, and let know if I can help. Seriously. I captain an APA league team, and have played TAP for over a year and a half...
