This may be a total waste of time
cause maybe no one knows anything
but here we go.

Do you know where or how any of our
pool terms evolved?

Did "the nuts" come from poker? If so
then how did it develop in poker?

Anybody know anything about the rest
of our pool terms?

It would be fun to know where they
came from.

There are those..that are still seeking the holy grail..
My guess is..your answers lay with in that book.

Past up through the ages...not sure who said what,an when.
But I'm sure you know this already..good luck with your quest.
Have a nice wknd.

depends on which lingo, which game etc...but generally speaking, many of the terms are not new words, but simply another application of an existing term...so the origin is pretty self explanitory. a better question might be when they were first publicly used in a pool related context.

Whitey

1968 @ Jansco's, first time I ever heard someone talk to the cue ball and he named it whitey it was RA....the great Ronnie Allen. He talked about whitey as if it was another person & in doing so craftily diverted ones attention away from his incredible skill level at that time.

I doubt that "the nuts" came from poker, poker wasn't anywhere near as popular as it is now when I started playing and I heard the term very soon after I started, early '60s to early '70s.

After that they called it the Brazillians, Brazil nuts were supposidly much larger that regular nuts'. ''That's on the square''.

Fats had a book called The Bank Shot and Other Robberies". In one part of the book it has definitions or all the lingo and slang you hear in the book so you know what he is talking about. It is pretty funny, I wonder is anyone has the book and would post that section, t is only about two pages.

I have it, both in original hard cover and paper back reprint, both the old and the new one. I may try it do it over the weekend but now tonight:p

In all seriousness, I believe it came from Dead Naught or the point at which there is no movement of a scale. Naught became mispronounced as Nuts as it was adapted to other meanings involving something being perfect, or in pool terms "Can't lose".
When used in machining it became "Dead nuts perfect" a term you sometimes hear regarding pool cues.

If you add up ''Dead nuts perfect" with....

The solid gold, platinum plated ones!

It should now read, Terminator, which is essence is Robo Cop with in turn is ''you know who''.

ORCOLLO
''kinda fun how things play out'' (this thread?) :)

I first heard the term in a draw poker game about 1966. I and one other player were left in the pot and he said, "You don't have anything. I got the nut." The term is sort of out of place in draw but, in any case, I called with an upper middle strength hand and lost to his two pair which isn't the "nuts" in draw.

These days a lot of people think it's a reference to gonads but I doubt that it was originally. If you have the nut or nuts in cards you have something that's sweet and has a hard shell, i.e., a sweet hand that is impossible to crack.

It's almost six full pages and I'm not about to type all that!! It's called "Proper English at Tableside". The Lyons Press reprint should be still available, I would think. Buy the book!

If I could just find a "dead nuts perfect" cue I'm pretty sure I could win a Brazilian dollars.
