Pool Needs a Great Interview Based Podcast!

I can't say that I am a huge fan of professional arm wrestling, but this last week I was bored and ended up spending some time watching the top in the world compete. I happened to come across a podcast/YouTube interview of Devon Larratt (one of the top Arm Wrestlers in U.S history). This specific interview was talking about a recent world championship match he had competed in against Levan Saginashvili, the #1 arm wrestler in the world (probably will be seen as the GOAT at some point). here is a link to that interview if you are interested:

The depth of this interview is amazing. I had no clue about the intricacies of arm wrestling both physically and mentally. The depth and nuance in this interview was truly impressive and eye opening. I kept flashing across other areas of interest that I have wishing spaces like "pool" had something at this level.

I have never heard a pool interview go into this type of depth/substance. No rush, no overly simplistic questions, no evading topics or letting individuals get away without gaining a true understanding of their thought processes etc...... That video has two individuals at the top of a sport talking in a level of detail that would be impressive to a beginner or seasoned professional. Hats off to them..... and I hope that in the future someone in the pool world will be able to capture these types of conversations. Can you imagine how amazing it would be to listen to Shane talk about pool in a conversation with someone knowledgable enough to elicit the depth of thought/explanation seen in this video. It would be magic. Imagine two hours of someone engaging Efren in that deep of a conversation.

I think the interviewer would have to be a rare breed of human that could demonstrate excellent equally in two categories.
1. They would have to be an amazing communicator, well prepared, great listener, and have a knack for asking the kinds of questions that force the
player to truly dig introspectively.
2. They would have to understand the game at a high enough level to be able to track with the answers, and to push the conversation into areas of great
depth.

Maybe this exists somewhere that I haven't seen. If not, I hope someone with the skills finds a way to make this happen. It would truly be a gift to the pool community.

Peace,
Chris

The best at anything not pool aren't involved in pool.

That's why you get what we got here today.

There are a few interview based programs out there, and if you look up the player review videos in AccuStats catalog that is about a 1 hour interview with the player about the match, what they were thinking, what shot selection they had to pick from, etc... If you listen to enough of the commentary on matches there is a lot of info that comes up not related to the match.

These were some of my favorite things that Pat did over the years, and something that I hope to do a lot more of in the future.

Something that I have noticed from all of the recent Accu-Stats matches that I have watched is just how much knowledge is shared by Jeremy Jones, Mark Wilson and the other commentators on these matches. It seems like every video has some concept or two that they expound on and it is great learning. Of course, I do miss Felix and Oscar Danny and Billy.

Jeremy is amazing, he is for sure in the top tier along with the original 80s/90s/2000s AccuStats guys. You forgot Grady, probably more so than Danny. Also Buddy, and several guest hosts did amazing work, a few people we know for great cues were on there as guests and were very good. Mark is a bit repetitive with saying what a "great transition" the stoke is LOL, as an instructor he tends to talk about the mechanics more than how the shot should be played, while Jeremy gives us the subtle ways you need to shoot a tricky shot as well as options. And he is very good with getting the other person involved in the commentary by saying things "what do you think" or "isn't that right", very professional and courteous to his co-host.

American Pool needs players with personality, a media production to promote the players, and a live audience, aka fans, to cheer for the players during a match... at appropriate times of course.

As much negative as is said about Trudeau and the IPT, he understood this concept. The qualifier system where there were players with stories who would be trying to qualify was brilliant. How could you not cheer for the junior player or the legendary road player who was in the Color of Money? It was something for people to get behind. Too bad it was handled the way it was.

Where have you guys been? The Pool Player Podcast with Molina Mike, Joey and Mike P is fantastic! They interview players, promoters, etc. They cover tournaments. Subscribe!

in addition to the two mentioned there are some good snooker podcasts with interviews:

snooker scene podcast
wst podcast
ultimate 8-ball podcast

i don't have time to listen to all of them but when there's an interesting guest i listen. ken doherty told a quite remarkable story in the ultimate 8 podcast about how he basically rid dublin of crime for one night (irish national tv broadcasted his 1997 snooker final). the mental side of the game really gets highlighted in these interviews also.

The Ultimate Pool Podcast is fantastic. Spoke to Scott Ryan once or twice about cues. They're passionate about the game and some of the guests they have on are pool and snooker legends.

The Ken Doherty episode in question.

Mike's above paragraph while a well-merited lamentation, beautifully serves unintentionally as a quite explicit roadmap, analysis and clear outline of an opportunity for someone with the smarts, time, and industry connections (and wealthy pool-enthused friends) to actualize the positives being described. Ethically pursue the merits of the total concept, research the IPT promoter's shortcomings/missteps, publicize a superior version of new IPT-like attempts relentlessly, and the resulting events can't help being successful in a big and memorable way during multiple years.
