Very cool response. I would only slightly disagree, but my start in the game was a bit different.

When I started, a couple "fellas" noticed I had talent. With almost 80 years in the game between them, they didn't want me to go down what they thought was the wrong path in pool.

They taught me everything I needed to know about hustling...NOT to hustle, but to AVOID being hustled. Those sort of things can be taught, and are essential if you want to play "straight" pool. By "straight" I mean, play to win.

I don't lose well...so laying down is not an option. I bring my A game everytime I step to the table...whether it's for 500 bucks or 50 bucks. If there's money involved, I want it. Simple. If $100 is all I'm gonna make in a particular night, so be it. It's $100 more than I had, and pool is not my living. It's an extra.

At the age of 40, with over half my life in the game, I've never been hustled. I've won, I've lost, but I've never been hustled.

So, my take is...there ARE things "about" the game you can learn. But to PLAY the game, and do it well, takes practice.

Learning to be mentally balanced in someone else's house can't be taught. You need to go there and play "Tournament tough", only comes with playing.

So, as said before me...GO OUT AND PLAY!!!

FOOTNOTE: added after further thought...My advice is, don't pay, or offer up extravagant gifts to someone in an attempt for them to make you better at something you are already "good" at. Table time can do that for you.

As has been noted, nobody can make you a champion. It has to come from inside you. A good instructor can show you how to get there, but you have to do it yourself. You don't have to move, or sell your soul, or anything like that. Study hard, learn the things you need to know, and then get to work. It doesn't come easy, but you can make it happen. A little help and guidance along the way to keep you working on the right things is all it takes.
(Oh yeah, a LOT of practice time too)

I honestly feel you have to believe you can be a champion and trust your stroke. You can get there yourself and if you really want it bad enough, the only help you should need is a little bit of instruction. I plan on being there one day myself.
