I hope I'm saying this right, I was playing a guy 8 ball tonight and I hooked him no jump shots. When he went to kick at it he marked the spot on the rail with the chalk, is this legal I didn't think so anybody know the rules thanks.

no not legal. but people do it ll the time. best to just go over there and pick it up and chalk your cue. or dont worry about it as it wont help that much at all.

If a player marks the rail for a kick shot, what makes you believe the person marked the rail at the correct spot to make the shot? Did he make the shot, or did he miss? I've never cared if the person I was playing wanted to mark the rail, put a piece of chalk there or whatever because he still had to make the shot with the right spin, speed...and contact point.

It is legal now in APA play. Which really sucks. But I actually had that situation a few weeks ago. It is legal as long as the chalk does not touch the felt.

The only time I could see this really being an advantage would be on a rail first shot. You usually need to hit a relatively accurately determined spot that can be hard to identify when down on your shot.

I dont need to mark the rail...... but Im marking the rail from here on out.

I think its rude. He should ask you first if there's an issue with you in him doing so. If it wasn't discussed before hand, he shouldn't assume it goes his way. But on the flip side of that, if he did it, so can you! I would have mentioned it to him after the shot so we're clear, and to ask before doing anything else that wasn't discussed.

When you say "He marked the rail with chalk" did he make a mark on the rail or playing surface using the chalk as a writing utensil, or did he set the chalk on rail at the spot he wanted to shoot the cue ball at?

I interpreted the story to mean that the guy put the cube of chalk down on the rail at the spot he wanted to hit, rather than directly draw on the cloth with the chalk.

If you mark the rail to kick or bank....you are retarding your learning experience.
....kinda like driving...and only being aware of what's happening in your own lane.
