I noticed yesterday on the A&E TV show, The First 48, there was a murder with a possible pool connection. I couldn't watch the rest of the show to see how it turned out.

When interviewing the decedent's girlfriend, she said he was a quiet man but he hustled pool and made part of his living that way. She speculated that he may have been on a winning streak and somebody at the pool hall may have taken exception to it.

I believe the pool hall was named 'Samples', in Memphis.

That's the extent of what I know.

Anyone have any other details? My sense is that it wasn't a recent case - it was a rerun.

Best,

Saw that one a long time ago. Someone followed him back to a hotel room shot and robbed him if I remember right. It was in Memphis but I don't recall the room. I played in Memphis a lot growing up and I didn't recongnize the guy or the pool room. You never know, sometimes they change the names for TV though.

I knew him. He used to hang at Mothers in Charlotte a few years back. He was going by the name Missippi Shorty. I was told his real name was Maurice...of course thats not what the show said...they said his name was Jonathan Ardey or something close to that. He played a strong shortstop speed...1 hole was his game of choice. You'd remember him if you ever played him...he'd often take 20-30 practice strokes before he hit the ball....painful to watch. Master chess player as well. Nice guy...like the show said, he was quiet & not a trouble maker. Just like most traveling poolplayers, he was looking for an easy dollar. Quite a shame...that hotel room was not for the weak of stomach. No one deserves that. Rest in peace my friend.

A man convicted in March of beating another man to death with the butt of a sawed-off shotgun in a motel room was formally sentenced Monday morning to life in prison.

Elliot Fullilove, 29, filed a motion for a new trial, but that was denied by Criminal Court Judge W. Otis Higgs Jr.

Among the reasons cited in the motion was that jurors should not have been shown photos of the grisly crime scene at the Deluxe Inn & Suites at 3456 Lamar.

"In all the years I've tried cases, this was the bloodiest I've ever seen," Higgs said, "but the jury had a right to see where the crime occurred and to be informed what actually happened."

Fullilove was convicted of conspiring with Serena Carter to lure an acquaintance, Jonathan Ardrey, to the motel and rob him on June 2, 2006.

Several days after the murder, Fullilove was stopped while driving Ardrey's car at McLemore and Latham, said state prosecutor Nicole Germain.

Fullilove contended that he killed Ardrey to defend Carter, 24, who goes on trial in November.

The case was featured in an episode of A&E's "The First 48" titled "The Hustler," a reference to the victim's pool skills.

I didn't see it recently but I did see the episode. I remember they caught the murderer. He was driving Shorty's car & was stopped. I believe it was someone Shorty knew...and that guy had went into the motel room with a 12ga. yet in the struggle didn't/couldn't shoot Shorty (there was a shotgun blast found in the wall) but beat him to death with the shotgun....then robbed him of about $200. Sad.
