Pool Room Stories: What's the most shady thing you've seen happen in a pool room?

What's the most shady thing you've seen happen in a pool room?

Pretty sure Ive seen a guy snag a gumball from a machine once......... Is that the kind of stuff you are looking for? Or should we list all the criminal acts we've seen in and around a pool hall, so that we can showcase a shitty side of pool on the front page for all newcomers to enjoy?

Let me know, I have stories for both sides..... The gumball thief was pretty crafty though.....

I wish my favourite pool room had a gabriels or Verhoeven
I just get the feelin when im at certain carom rooms that near anything can happen and im usually on edge

I cant wait for my gabriels to be delivered so I wont have to go to these seemingly shady places anymore
I may be wrong, but I could be right

an even break

I didn't see it myself but heard from a very reliable source that DEANOC
once gave a sucker an even break. As this goes against everything us
Oak Cliff boys stand for, to say I was hurt and embarrassed is quite the
understatement. But thankfully it was a one time thing and to my knowledge
never happened again.

I want to hear the criminal stories! For the following reasons:

1. They're entertaining stories...
2. Everyone acts like there is all this crazy stuff going on the behind the scenes but I rarely see it. So, are they just exaggerating?

Drug dealing.

That's about it. I've witnessed/heard of more bizarre things than shady.

I didn't see it personally, but heard from multiple people...

There were a couple guys from out of town who were here for several days. One of the locals is trying to get one of them to gamble. Out of towner tells him no, because I hear you stiff people. He turns and walks away and the local takes the butt of his cue and cracks him in the back of the head. I was told the guy didn't want to press charges.

Local was banned for life from only pool hall in town, this lasted about 8-12 months. He's back now. And from what I hear, he will stiff ya

Bad stuff happens everywhere. Just because you dont see it, doesnt mean its not happening.

Short list off the top of my head,

-More fights than I can count
-Shootings
-Stabbings
-Drug deals
etc etc etc

My main point is its not glamorous or entertaining. Its just bad shit..... and like I say, it happens everywhere.

I went to the little boys room to take a leak, the other afternoon, and one of my buddies was in there taking a crap. I said. "S'up?"
He said. "Just my blood pressure."
In a little bit he says. "Say, what's that little machine over there on the wall? Is that new?"
I finish up and go take a look. "I've never seen it before, either. It says on the front here, Kotex, seventy-five cents per pad."
We look at each other, and both of us say at the same time. "Uh, oh!"
We think for a minute, then he says. "You go out first, and in a couple of minutes I'll come out after you."
I say. "Sounds like a plan." I head for the door.
A few minutes go by and my buddy's still in there. Another five go by and still no one comes out. Finally, after who knows how long, he comes through the door with a big grin on his face.
I say. "What the hell you grinning for, and what took you so long?"
He smiles and says. "The other guys would never believe what just happened, right? So I took out my pocket knife, pried open the Kotex machine, and grabbed a couple of pads for proof." He opened up his shirt and sure enough, there they were.
I laughed all the way back to the table.

I was at a tournament and bought one of the strong players the owner or the room bough the other strong player . Both players got put in the looser side by luck shots when they met my player lost on a shot that was easy . found out later by the player I bought that he owed the owner some money and the owner told him if he lost to his man he would cancel the loan. his player went on to win the whole thing

Back in 83/84 in Mitchell, SD at the Doc N Eddy's. There were some high school kids who would prey on the local tech school students and beat them up outside. Three members in my program were beat up, one with a broken arm.

He was a former college wrestler in one of the heavier classes. One day, a week or two later, he was walking down the street when he met up with one of the perps. This kid got the fist end of the cast into his face a few times.

I don't remember hearing if the police ever charged anyone.

When I was a kid my dad had been a fight with a guy, really the guy had sucker punched him and saw him at the pool room and played it cool, guy wants to play a game, and starts to rack the balls, My dad stands there and when he bending over to get the balls , my dad takes that cue and smacks him right in the forehead, out like a light, My dad tells me , come on lets go.....

What's the most shady thing you've seen happen in a pool room?

It would be hard to top XXXXXX when putting on a tournament in Miami spreading around counterfeit money.

I came back and removed the name, while true better not to use names

Yep, I've seen some shady things happen in pool halls, especially the action ones.
....about one millionth of one percent of what happens in corporate boardrooms....
......and political backrooms.....
.....and big charity organizations.

I've seen some nice things happen in those same pool halls...
...percentage-wise, I suspect far greater than than in those other institutions.

I remember a black roadplayer at the Rack in Detroit having a heart attack....
...about a month later, someone called to say he was bringing him over for the afternoon..
.....$1.800 was raised for him in about ten minutes.

Some years ago there was a local player that had played in pro events and done fairly well, he liked to pick on new, young, inexperienced players. You know he'd offer to play for a few bucks and also play like a beginner setting them up for a clean out and he was ruthless. He'd take their money, their cue, their car, anything he could. Well, I always thought that was pretty shady.

But me, I'm the inquisitive type, I have to research and investigate everything. So as a beginner I made it a point to run around to as many pool rooms as I could and play on as many different tables and watch as many different players as I could and I made friends of the employees in those pool halls.

This guy operated in a network, so whenever anyone would steer, they would get a cut. I show up one day at a deserted pool room, other than the employees the only one there was this guy and it's the middle of the day when everyone normal is at work, I just happened to have the day off. I have seen this guy play many times so I say "hi' and he gives me the brush off and goes back to his drink and his cigarette.

Pr1ck, he didn't even recognize me. So I get a table from an employee that I don't know and I start to bang the balls around.

A little while later I come up to the counter and this guy, he's still nursing the same drink and probably the same cigarette. The counter person comes over to me and I ask if I can order something to eat, "Hey, can I get a hot dog and Diet Coke?", "Sure, that's $4.75"

I pull out my money clip, it has about $400 and change in it, this guy sees it and I swear to god he lights up like a Christmas Tree, and now he's friendly,
"I saw you out there, you're pretty good"

I know this is bullshit, first of all I'm not stupid and I know I'm awful and he hasn't looked up from the bar in the last hour.

"Yea, you think so?" I can see what's coming.

He tells me that he has tried to play but he's terrible and can never find anyone to play with so he asks if I'd play some, I decline not wanting to get caught up in his fleecing.

A few minutes later the counter guy calls me to come and get my hot dog and this guy asks me again, "C'mon, help me out, maybe you can give me some pointers, if you want we can play for a few bucks just for fun" so I smile and this time I agree, "OK, for a couple of bucks" and he asks, "Say, you're not trying to hustle me, are you?"

We go down to play and he's asking questions and a couple of bucks turns into $5, then $10, then $20, then he tells me,
"I have to leave in a little while, how about one more for what I owe you, double or nuthin'?"

I'm up $120 so I look at my watch, "Oh shit, what time is it?, I have to get going, my wife's gonna kill me!" I see him beginning to steam,

"You can't do that, you have to give a chance to get even!"

"Sorry, I don't have time, I have to get going, so you need to pay me"

"WHAT!!!! NO WAY!!!"

I smile again,
"You know what [real name]?" this shocks the white off his teeth,

"You know what? I've seen you play before and I know who you are, do you want me to tell everyone that you're bad action? It won't be long before this town dries up for you."

I loved it when the smoke came out of his ears, he threw 6 twenties at me, called me a few names and sat down at the bar.

I threw the employee a twenty and left. That was in the early 90's and this guy hates me to this day. Pretty shady, if you ask me

I hear a truck drove through the front of a pool hall and killed at least one person in the pool community recently. Pretty crazy eh?

Entertained yet?
