Pool Rooms in Baltimore or Richmond

Korean Lee's pool room is not in such a good neighborhood.

Top Hat isn't exactly a place where I'd walk around with my Gucci bag and gold jewelry, if I owned a Gucci bag and gold jewelry! :grin-square:

Cigar Tom's room in Dundalk, the surrounding neighborhood is a little rough, IMHO.

A little south of Baltimore, in Laurel, MD, I heard that they have a gun-detecting machine at the entrance of Side Pockets now, (the old Champion's).

Just to name a few....
cigar tom's pool room???? tom never did own a room, he works at running out billiards which craig owns & only works there 2 days a week. Top hat is not a bad room or neighborhood, dino runs a good room there & several others, i just dont get where your coming from knocking these rooms, im at both 5-6 nights a week.

I agree.

Top Hat is in more of a commercial area. Across the street is a big clean safe nicely lit shopping center. Right across the parking lot from Top Hat are 2 banks (1 brand new Bank of America building, which was built, they did not move into it and doesn't even have bullet proof glass at the teller counters). Across the street is a huge Ford dealership. I don't get or understand how Top Hat could possibly be considered un-safe. Additionally, the neighborhood has not changed much, if at all, in the 8 years I have been frequenting and living in, for about 7 years, that area/neighborhood.

Running Out Billiards is in what could be called, for lack of a better term, converted residential buildings. Nothing much unsavory about that locale either.

The only way someone could feel unsafe at either location is if they are one of those highly pampered Beverly Hills socialites who never leaves their multi-million dollar gated estate communities and whose idea of roughing it means having to shop off of Rodeo Drive. Even then, there would be something seriously wrong with you if you felt uncomfortable.

Describing either location as a bad place to go or knocking them is assinine.

Ummmmmm, when was the last time you have been to, or even near, Top Hat or Running Out?

Pardon me for not being more explicit. I should have stated the pool room that Cigar Tom works in, located in Dundalk, not that he owned it. My mistake. :o

Thanks for your opinion. I'm the biggest knocker in the Metro D.C. area. Haven't you heard? :p

Ummmmm, I just expressed my thoughts on the subject matter.

I have an opinion about Baltimore pool rooms that may differ from yours.

Admittedly, I live in D.C.

I personally think the pool rooms in Richmond have a much friendlier atmosphere than Baltimore and D.C. both. :)

IMHO, your opinion that both are some place you wouldn't feel comfrotable or safe is sort of odd.

I guess being in a middle class neighborhood isn't your cup of tea. Not sophisticated or high-brow enough for you?

Why is it that you are upset that I expressed my thoughts? I am not trying to argue with you here. I just do not like the neighborhood that some pool rooms are in. I have been going to pool rooms in Baltimore for many years, off and on, maybe more off than on, but I know the Baltimore pool scene pretty good. I am not an expert, by any means.

That said, I tried to provide the OP of this thread some helpful information. It seems that my opinion has upset you. I am not sure what else I can say. Is it time to bring the army of flamers into this thread now?

No, I am not upset....lol

Army of flamers, good one JAM. HAHAHAHAH, I just bruised my thigh from laughing so hard and slapping it. Dammit, where's the ice pack?

I just find it kind of silly that you characterized both areas as not so good or "rough", when neither locale deserves it, imho, and I am basing what I said on up-to-date knowledge of both areas.

In no way am I saying that nothing bad has not or ever will happen at either location, but both places are good places to go as far as I am concerned.

Your opinion about side pockets with the metal detectors at the entrance is understandable. I don't know of a whole lot of people who would be reassured by the presence of metal detectors....lol

Baltimore used to rock when it came to pool rooms. Today, it is quite different than it used to be.

Earlier this afternoon, I just happened to speak with Sandy, the lady who owns Jack and Jill's in Glen Burnie, the room in the back of the shopping center that used to be known as Bill and Billie's by us old-school campaigners. Not to be confused with the Arnold Bill and Billie's. Of course, most know that Jack and Jill's have shut their doors due to a lease problem, and in recent times, the night time activity there was a little rough, compared to what it used to be in that room. I used to love that pool room a whole lot! :(

Sandy and I had a discussion about pool in Maryland; in particular, Baltimore. She and I are both in agreement that pool just ain't what it used to be around this neck of the woods. It seems that the bar pool is more popular in Baltimore today than pool rooms.

She also told me that my friend, who I call "Fat Wayne from Baltimore," is playing more bar pool today in Baltimore, much more so than frequenting Baltimore pool rooms. Fat Wayne goes where the action is.

That said, Richmond seems to be flourishing, with new pool rooms opening up, welcoming action players, hosting tournaments and leagues. Richmond, IMHO, is a more comfortable pool environment. This is why I choose Richmond as a great place to play pool over Baltimore.

The pool rooms in D.C. are what I term "yup joints." These kind of pool rooms just ain't my cup of tea, and it doesn't have anything to do with their neighborhoods. I guess that will bring out a few more folks who will disagree with my opinion. :grin-square:

Dammmm you and your tea!

I agree completely with the above: Richmond> B'more today. DC=brutally social.

Sandy knows pool.

I'm happy to report that Orange Ball in Rockville, MD, is hopping, particularly on Wednesday nights. Just got back from the weekly tournament and it was heavily populated by some of the area's strongest shooters.

I'm VERY impressed with Brian Deska's game, in particular. He is shooting strong! McCreesh played a nice safety, Brian did a masse-kick, made the shot, ran out, and then added 2 break-and-runs on top of that (maybe a third, even).

Maybe it was such a good turnout tonight since everyone is practicing for the 9ball Frederick tournament on Saturday.

I keep wanting to hit Orange Ball, and work keeps me away. When we go there, if Keith is hitting 'em okay, then we're there until the place closes. The next day, I can't get any work done. I don't know how y'all do it.

One thing I will enjoy next time I do go to Orange Ball is that I won't have to scurry outside to suck on the nicotine sticks. Today, I am officially a non-smoker, for over a year now! :)

How many players are they getting each weekly tournament? Still above 20? Is Mike R. still running it? He's great!

We should make up a list of pool rooms in our area, kind of like a Trip-Tick for visitors.

We could put down a little information about each room and invite others to add their thoughts, i.e., whether a room is action friendly, where weekly tournaments are held, who has smoking and who doesn't, who serves booze and who doesn't, what food is the best, directions, phone numbers, et cetera. :)

There does seem to be a lot of inquiry threads about folks coming to the Metro D.C. area, to include Baltimore and Richmond.

Congrats on being smoke free. That is the single best thing you can do for your health!

There were definitely more than 20 people there last night (looked like about 24). The turnout isn't always that high, but seems to always be at least 16.

Sol is running the tournament now. Mike R. doesn't come in every week anymore. I know he's busy and struggling with trying to sell houses in this market.

I can tell you I was more uncomfortable going to Big Daddy's then I ever have been going to Top Hat. With that said, I would go back to Big Daddy's in a heart beat as it is a great room.

I have never played in Richmond so have no clue as to why it would be better or worse.

And if you stay near the airport, go to Big Daddy's.

Fast Eddies in Spring Field has a nice guy looking to play
one pocket. Heard he shows up in the afternoon.

Hugs
