Pool Rules Quiz

I just took it. I got 85%. When I have some time, I'm going to go back and look at the 15 I got wrong and see what I missed.

#29 is bullshit. Nobody would get this wrong in real life. The only reason you'd get this wrong is because it's a video.

As well, there are a couple others I got wrong because the camera angle is not the angle I would have personally chosen to watch the shot. The test sort of lulls you into a false sense of security by showing you fairly obvious shots and then uses the same perspectives yet with very unusual strokes/shots. I think if these shots were performed IRL, I'd probably get at least 5 more right, possibly more. There's a bunch where it's very difficult to tell even though I'm sure slow-motion cameras can detect the foul.

Has anyone ever taken Dr. Dave's referee quiz? Did you score higher than 80%?

Thank you for posting this. I hope more people try it.

BTW, it is not "Dr. Dave's referee quiz." Bob Jewett and I created it together, and its not just for referees (its for players too, especially league players), so it's "Bob's and Dr. Dave's Pool Rules Quiz."

Regards,
Dave

PS: When Bob and I first took the exam, we got 100's, but we knew all of the answers (since we filmed all of the shots together). :grin-square:

I'm not clear about the BS call here. #29 was shooting about half-ball into a frozen ball. Lots of players think that's illegal.

Actually, it's OK to answer something like, "Well, it looks like a good hit but if I were over by the side pocket I could see the tangent line better and then if it went forward of the line I'd call a foul."

Were there some specific shots that stand out to you?

73% for me. I agree with above. Numerous shots I would have looked at from a different angle than the one given.

92

I scored a 92, but as Bob and Dave admit some of the calls are pretty subjective...like the CB moving forward slightly after an elevated hit.

Also, if it's illegal to scoop the CB to make a jump shot, why is it legal to scoop the ball and accidentally get a good hit on a combination?

I think the most important concept of this exam is...did you learn anything???
Thanks Joe. I wasn't trying to sound negative. As you so artfully pointed out, I did enjoy the exam and learned a lot too.
