Pool Table From China.....

I just ordered a pool table from a local billiards place about 6 weeks ago from today (3-29-07). It is shipped from China so I assume that it is made there. At first I was skeptical about the idea, but then he told me that the cushions were Olhausens own.... Accu-Fast. The slate is 1 1/4 inch thick (like 1000lbs.), and the cloth is Titan. It was not too pricy, and it comes with a lot of accessories. The reason he had none in stock is because it is a more contemporary style table, than just the regular wood kind.

The one thing that I am worried about is: I have heard a lot of controversy about tables made in China, or billiard equipment that comes from China. Is this a bad thing? They have a few tables in their store and they play wonderfully. I think they are so cheap because they don't have a brand name on them, like Brunswick. So I'm just curious if I made the right decision, I dont want to get screwed.

BTW. He told me 6 weeks ago that it would take 6-8 weeks to get here. So I go in there the other day and the table is schedualed to ship on April the 5th. And to top it off its going to take another 5-6 weeks after that! Boy was I ready to put his face through the wall at that point. This is becuase it has already been 6 weeks, and so when it finnally gets here its going to be more like 12 weeks!! I thought good buisnesses were suppost to tell you a certain time and then suprise you by having it come early, well... these guys are working on the opposite basis I guess.

So the point of the story is, I'm having some doubts about the table coming from China and all.

What do you guys think?

I would have had serious doubts before the whole 6 weeks late fiasco

get your money back

This is a nine footer right, how much you pay?

My table is a three piece slate import brand, and I play on it every day.

I wish the guys who assembled it actaully gave a rats !@#$ about putting it togeter correctly. Good thing I'm hand with tools.

It's an 8 foot table. Ran about $1800 with tax. Pretty good compared to other brand name tables.

Friend of mine got a similar table. Chinese, low price. Doesn't seem too bad, other than the cloth. There's something about the cloth on that table that just doesn't play right.

What kind of cloth is it?

My first table was a no name from china. The pockets were cut at an odd angle and you could hardly make a ball on it. I sold it and bought an olhausen oversize 8 foot table. The pockets are 1/4 inch tighter at the mouth of the pocket but well struck balls go down. Maybe I just had bad luck but I would never consider an off make table again.

No idea. Definitely not Simonis.

Yeah, I've played on a really nice Connelly table that had some crappy felt, and it sucked soooo bad. It was also lobsided witch made it no fun at all to play on this "nice" table.

You couldn't find a pool table made in the USA that you liked?

Signs of the times guys. We sell USA and Chinese tables in our store. The Chinese tables went from 5% of our sales to 60% of our sales in 5 years. We sell Fischer tables which is owned by CL Bailey here in the USA. They built their own factory over in China to keep up the level of quality. Chinese tables are usually hit or miss. Some are well made. Some are junk. Some sold on Ebay that we have installed for people are not good enough to be labeled as junk:rolleyes: . The dealer should have never told you that it takes 6 weeks from China. He should have explained that the boat takes that long to get here. If your priority was speed you should just buy a USA table and spend double the money. If your priority is price then you wait for the Chinese table. China is taking all of our manufacturing jobs for a reason. They do it cheaper. Americans want it cheaper. Thats all there is to it. You have to take shortcuts to make it cheaper. That is just common sense. There are still good companies making pool tables in the USA like Diamond:) (Best made table on the market today IMO) , CL Bailey:) , Olhausen just moved to TN I think. Brunswick is 100% import from China, Brazil and Mexico now:mad: . For all the old timers that remember the old days when tables were made well I suggest you go out and buy a USA made table...while you still can. It wont be much longer. :(

Wow, thanks for all your info. Well...I do want it cheaper so I guess I wait for 6 more weeks. :( Lol I had not idea that Bruswick was 100% import from China. Haha, I was even thinking about canceling and getting a brunswick, LOL, shows you how informed I am.:D

I can guarantee you this, if that table is produced in China, there in no chance that it has Olhausen's Accu-Fast cushions on it. They won't even put it on their own entry level poplar tables. I have the feeling that you are being duped.

I would still put a brunswick in that price range up against that table any day for playability, and longevity of product. I sell both china tables and brunsicks. And while it is no secret that brunswick's quality has lapsed, they are no where near as badly constructed as the china brand we sell.

Your dealer is probably getting the table from an importer. Tables do not come in from China one at a time - they come in containers with 40+ tables. Your table was probably added to someones bulk order but theres no telling when that order might have been placed unless your dealer is the one ordering in bulk.

CL Bailey has a relationship with The Level Best (china roots) - they manufacture billiard supplies and accessories and have introduced a new cloth to the market called Velocity. Pretty good stuff - a worsted cloth that has been tested and is comparable with Simonis and Tour Edition but much lower priced.
I believe you get better quality products from American companies that manufacture products in china as compared to products made by independent china manufacturers.

The last time I looked, you could get an Olhausen table starting around $2200 or $2400. For something that you will hopefully have for a very long time, that is not a lot of extra money, + you will then be supporting american made product.

I do not know if it is true, but I heard that the wood used in Chinese tables is not as good, and has more of a tendnecy towards warping. Just something I read here somewhere. Not sure of the accurracy.

A long time player here in So. Calif who also installs tables told me about a month ago that he has installed about 18 Chinese tables and has been very impressed with their quality. As far as the wood goes I have read and been told that the Chinese have been buying large quantities of premium wood from here and Canada and importing it to their country for manufacturing. Can anyone confirm this?

I think I could surf from China to the USA in 12 weeks if the sharks do not get me .......
