I just started checking Craigslist for the fun of it and if you enter pool table there are so many you can't look at them all. I have a feeling when the foreclosure comes a pool table is not something you put in the back of the car. They were also a luxury item many people got a few years ago when things were a lot better. I remember seeing houses advertised with pool tables almost like a designer piece. If anyone ever wanted a used pool table for like 20 cents on the dollar or less now may be the time. Not all low end either, Gandy, Olhausen, Gold Crown's they are all there if you look.

deals are out there

I've passed on some great ones, but here's two that I scored:

A 10-foot GC 1 snooker table with some accesories for $300.

A 10-foot Madison pool/billiards table (convertable) for FREE. The gal only posted a picture of the corner pocket on craigslist.

Even after expenses, I'm into them for pennies on the dollar.

It is a buyer's market!

Yep, great deals abound. I bought my second pool table, an older valley bar box on Craigslist for a mere $100. It looks good next to my 9' Diamond pro.

Happy shopping all...:D

YUP there are tons of them out there 4-sale. Yesterday I saw a few Diamonds for sale cheap. $1,700 for an Oak one and $3,000 for a Diamond Wood one with the light and chairs. The Diamond was bought fast for only $2,700 I heard.

To do a complete Craigslist search I use http://www.searchtempest.com/
It gives you all the options you may want to use like High / Low price and pictures only + you can search the entire US or just a few hundred miles away. It even allows you to search eBay Classifieds in the same way.

I just did a quick search on there and found these:

DIAMOND POOL TABLE - $1500 (INDIANPOLIS, INDIANA)
9' Diamond Professional Oak Table - $2650 (Worthington)
9' Pool Table - Diamond - $2495 (Sarasota, FL.)
Diamond Pool Table, Bar, 4 Pool Chairs, Bistro Table & Cabinet(OBO) - $3499 (Toledo)

brunswick gold crown pool table - $850 (greensboro)
brunswick gold crown 9ft pool table - $1500 (seffner)
Gold Crown Pool Table - Brunswick - $1200 (Mexico, MO)
Brunswick Gold Crown pool table - $800 (Cleveland, Ohio)

This one might be the best deal yet as it is a GCV:
Brunswick pool table - $1595 (Metro Parkway )Florida - ft myers / SW florida

This one might be a better deal if not the best deal:
Brunswick Gold Crown Pool Table - $475 (Flint)

Brunswick ANNIVERSARY Pool Table 4 x 8 SIMONIS CLOTH Delivered/Set Up - $1950 (SA MED CENTER)

This one could be the CHERRY ON TOP !!!
Brunswick Anniversary Pool Table - $500 (Linden)

I wish I had a truck and a crew to go and pick up some of these tables...

Yes, some seemingly great deals on there. Thanks, also thanks for the way to search all of Craigslist at one time, I always figured there was a way but never could find it.

I wouldn't go so far as to equate pool tables with any kind of economic indicator.

Pool Tables have long been like puppies, but for adults. Promises are made that they'll be played with and taken care of, but 3 months later all interest is lost.

I am not sure I understand what you are saying.

Go to http://www.searchtempest.com/ and type in (with the marks) "Diamond Pool Table" set your search criteria to 3,500 miles and under options check the box for "Has Picture".

All of the links I sated in the earlier post work there just fine.

You may have to click "NEXT" a few times to get to the next set of cities.

I found some tables 2 Gandy big G's for $400.00 and $450.00 and a Brunswick centennial for $800.00. I tried to post links but they didn't work so I deleted them.

Don't be so sure. I have found that when times get tough people tend to move around. A pool table is not the kind of thing you can just pack up. I have a Gold Crown I got pretty much for nothing. The house was sold and the new owners wanted it out. They just gave it to me when they found out how much it would cost to have moved and stored. It no longer looked like an asset.

Before the bank shows up people will turn what ever they can into cash. Pool tables are almost worthless in a quick sale. You need the right buyer to get what it is worth. Even furniture goes cheap when the time comes. They leave with what fits in the car.

Always a bargain if you look hard.

I have been looking at table bargains for 15+ years, in USA and here in Australia.

macguy is right. People find it difficult to dispose of a large item within the home unless a specific buyer is interested. The cost of moving a pool table is higher than having a large fridge installed or moved. This has given a lot of mechanics...me included...with some great bargains over the years. While it cycles around, I find it switches more in areas that are having building booms or housing slumps rather than how the entire market is performing. The financial woes of the last 3 years are probably making these bargains a little more visible, but they have always been there. You just have to search a bit.

Don't forget...they are not always in the easiest places to remove, and therefore require a bit of hard work on our part! As long as we have some spare storage space we may turn a profit on the resale. Most times that profit is minimal but we get a re-installation fee. This at least keeps our work ongoing.

I am sure that other mechanics won't be too fussed that I mentioned this, after all...if ANYBODY could move one they would do it themselves and then the prices would not vary so much.

Happy Hunting!

Although not really a mechanic, these people got steered to me to handle their table. They wanted it taken down and moved about 50 miles to a storage unit. I gave them a price of $200.00 Before I even started the job the guy decided he didn't want to put out any money and asked if I would just take the table and call it even. The thing is and someone will think I stole his table. Once the table is broken down it's worth goes way down. It is very hard if not impossible to sell a table as a pile of parts.

To get rid of this table for any decent price he would have to have a place to set it up in the future, pay to have it put together again. Then he would have to advertise it to find a buyer. The new buyer in turn would have to pay to have it moved and set up and probably want the guy to absorb the cost. When it was all said and done the guy was better off just having me take it off his hands under his circumstances. A pool table that cost a few thousand can drop to almost nothing under the right circumstances.
Except for a car sitting your yard with a blown engine, a pool table may be one of the hardest things to get rid of, at least for any decent money.

I once bought a Gandy big G for $100.00. I could not get $300.00 for the table because it was all in parts. I finally sold it for $600.00 but had to install it with new cloth and guarantee the table would be OK. Buying and selling pool tables is far from a lucrative business.

Pool table market

I agree that the economy has had a huge effect on the pool table market. We get 10 calls, or more, from people wanting to sell their table for every one wanting to buy. Many of those are moving or outright losing their homes, and will take what they can get to just get anything at all and just move on. Our local Craigslist had 50+ tables last time I counted, and if you've been in the business for a long time you scroll down saying "wow, these are great deals and I should buy some." Just like houses, though, they are only great deals compared to 5 years ago- not now. If that person can't sell their 9 foot Olhausen for $600 on Craigslist, I probably can't make much on it after I move it twice, and put new cloth on it. Add in the flood of chinese tables that were sold in the past 5 years for $1200 or less new, (those folks are willing to sell really cheap because they bought cheap), and that's a lot of used tables out there. Like the housing market, the over supply will take time to work through the system, and things will be tough for most until it does. I had a call from a guy today who wants me to recover a blue Gold Crown I he says he bought for 20 bucks. I don't know what shape it's in-probably not great since he says he moved it himself in one piece-but I'm pretty sure THIS one was a good deal! The silver lining is that if you want a classic table for a cheap price, now is the time to be looking.

I'm not suggesting that situations don't arise that force people into selling, but I am suggesting that we not isolate causality on this one condition. A good economic indicator, like any other test, needs to identify causality or it doesn't work properly.

There are other reasons why we see so many pool tables for sale:

1) It's not a disposable item. There's very little to wear on a pool table, and unless it is horribly mistreated a table can be reconditioned and re-sold.

2) It is simply much easier to buy used these days. More storefronts are devoted to used merchandise. More websites are devoted to used merchandise. As communication channels open, it is easier to sell your used items. This is seen all over the economy. New vehicle sales have been seriously affected by this. Video game manufacturers have gone to great lengths to apply one time codes and other gimmicks to keep players from buying used games.

3) As said in the above post, the item tends to have a bit of a 'fad' tendency. Lots of pool tables, historically, are sold on the basis that they are no longer played on. Given their size, they tend to be sold in a localized region, making the sales more difficult. Now, with sites like Craigslist one can search a much greater area than in the past, when word of mouth or local classifieds were the primary options. This ease of communication effectively grows the market size for any particular table. Communication effectively drives up supply.

In the case of used car sales, the economy has reacted. Used car prices are rising, as a reaction to demand. With pool tables, however, there is a relatively fixed demand for the item. Not only is the player base relatively fixed, but the size requirements for a table greatly limits the number of tables that are in demand. Supply effectively goes up, demand doesn't match and the price goes down. There are a lot of reasons for that, including people being forced to sell items they may not have otherwise sold.
