Pool Tips by Max Eberle

Many of you already know that Max has a set of high quality instructional videos out.

I got a set from Max when he was in my area a year or so ago. He's on Facebook and you can catch up with him there.

Max travels all over the world playing pool and he takes great pictures while he is doing it and shares it with the pool playing community.

What I didn't know is how many GREAT tips Max has on youtube. He has over 30 videos on youtube alone and some of them are FANTASTIC tips to improve your pool game.

What Max does as well or better than any other pool instructor is he articulates in a very precise manner, much like his pool game. If you watch his videos you will pick up some things just by listening to him.

He's got this one drill for determining if you are hitting the center of the cue ball by shooting up and down the middle of the pool table with center ball. I've seen many instructors attempt to instruct people on this drill but NOBODY describes what you should be doing as precisely as Max describes it. I picked up on a little tip from his instruction that is sure to help me with my game and to help my students.

I second almost everything you said. A very intelligent and articulate player. He has a great aptitude for teaching that many players just plaing dont possess. I wish the guy would learn how to play one hole though-- seriously. living on 9ball for me would be like trying to live off bananas or something. anyway, to each their own, i just dont know how he does it.

I'm not saying this colors your reviews, but personally I think you should say when you're reviewing stuff you get for free and when you're not.

A disclaimer, if you will -- full disclosure and all that.

Lou, the truth is as far as your opinion on these matters goes, I don't give a flying f*** what you personally think or don't think, what you want or what you don't want or what you would like to see or what you wouldn't like to see.

The fact is, it's none of your business what products are sent to me free of charge or what I purchase.

Thanks Enzo. Max is in a class by himself. I'm surprised that he doesn't do more one-on-one pool instruction. If he plays really bad one pocket, I might trade him pool lessons.

I bought Max's DVD set lots of super info and very high quality. Letting my grandson use it now an he is loving it. Super teaching tool. :thumbup:

It's not a big deal, it is just being an honest broker of information. Ferinstance, when I got sponsored to report on the CSI US Open 10-Ball last year, I said up front I was being put up in Vegas by CSI, so that it was out in the open that I had received compensation.

I have all of Max's instructional material and think it's top notch. Max shows what's happening in the stroke and explains how to get there as if your right with him doing it. It is a rare view of what goes through the player's mind while they're hitting balls and why.

Some players/instructors have a hard time conveying their message to the watcher, but not Max. His low key approach and detailed examination of all of the stroke mechanics and its many flaws is well worth the cost of the dvd.

If you're not saying Joey's reviews are influenced by him receiving or not receiving product, what do you care if he discloses or not?

On one side of your mouth you're saying "I'm not saying this colors your reviews;" however, on the other side of your mouth--- you're implying just that by asking him to disclose his personal dealings.

So, regardless of what you think--- your post wasn't of a gentleman tone as you say. It's in fact a cool, calm and collected way to imply someone isn't being straight and honest. Your post was "designed" to hit a nerve and it did. When Joey blew up, you're like "Whoa -- I was totally calm in my post, etc, etc, gee whiz - I must've hit a nerve."

If you think Joey posts slanted reviews--- say it and stand by it. Don't protect yourself with double messages by saying "You don't think he's doing this..." and then leave it open that he "might."

As they say, everything before the "but" is bvlls@#t. Joey caught on to that and responded accordingly.

While I am sure his one pocket will get better in time, it was not on a par with his rotation games the last time he came through Northern Ca.

Well, it's not a matter of being nosey, it's a question of ethics and disclosure.

The FTC generally says that when there's a product endorsement by an expert, and there's been free stuff given out, that should be disclosed because people should have that info to fairly evaluate a product review.

If you do a quick search for "disclosure ethics" you see that almost everyone that does product reviews, from the NYTimes tech reviewer:

They all include a disclosure statement. It's not a big deal, but people have a right to know if you're reviewing free stuff because if for no other reason people should know that you're reviewing stuff that you got for free and that you weren't willing to spend your own hard earned dollars on.

People talk about why pool is small time. Part of that is because our "experts" don't play by big time rules.

Whatever you do, don't EVER ask Max about these two things, if you want any semblance of a head left afterwards. (Read: his opinions of these two things will literally blow your mind -- or the mind of any rational person.) Great pool instructor, though. Joey's right -- Max does have the gift of clarity when it comes to articulating details.

BTW, I'm going to have to agree with Dave (Spidey) about the baited hook you threw out there to Joey. I think you knew -- or at least suspected -- you'd get the reaction you did, and your "whoa, where did this come from" faked innocence facade was obvious. Or while you may've suspected Joey would've taken the bait, perhaps you didn't expect that Joey would've taken the rod and reel (and you with it) overboard into the water with him. Hope you have your shark repellent.
