pool

...Analogies are over rated.

Great way to summarize this thread, IMHO!

The women, as hard as they try, as much as they train, as often as they compete with or without the men, I just don't ever see them possessing the same capabilities as the men players.

It is okay to glorify the women players if you think that is going to bring recognition to the sport, but to say that a Shanelle will defeat Earl Strickland, even the hypothetical, is a little bit like wishful thinking or "hope," I guess is the best word. Ain't gonna happen. :)

The only possible way to get them playing for more prize money is to get them on television more. Pool has been doing the same thing for decades and only a handful of people can make a living at it.

I think it's time for a major change and with Jasmin finishing in the semis at the world 14.1 and now with the amazing wins from the ladies this week I actually see a light at the end of the tunnel and I'm excited about it.

Okay it wouldn't specifically need to be Earl Strickland that Shanelle would have to beat. Any top pro like Shane Van Boening for instance would do. That would be the guy that Yu Ram Cha just beat. Did you hear about that? The girl that just a year ago wasn't playing that well. Yeah so there is definitely a possibility that in five years Shanelle might be able to pull an upset on camera.

A big part of my original point was that it doesn't have to be in the finals or even the semifinals to be aired on television. Just film the matches and if they are entertaining matches then you would air them.

Does anyone know for sure? Is Shanelle learning from some of the same people as Yu Ram Cha?

I understand your opinon. However, if the female player looked like a troll doll, would you still believe in the females being the change agent for pool's survival on TV?

I guess I would not like to see sex selling pool. Some people think this is great, and that's fine. I just don't agree with it, or maybe I should say, I would rather see the lady pros garner interest because of their skills set, shooting capabilities, and game strategies, rather than their physical characteristics.

I couldn't possibly care less if it's because sex combined with talent sells. No I do not think pool would improve if the female players were ugly. I'm talking about reality here. If Shanelle and other attractive women players like Jasmine, Ga Young Kim, Jeanette Lee, X-pan, Beretta, etc. etc. were on tv winning matches against men it would attract way more viewers than the two men pros going at it and that's the bottom line.

I agree 100%.......

luxury, i hope ur vision works where there is a seperate special tour of top 16 women v top 16 men, to attract the public interest.

Thanks for this nice pm.

How would this one time occurrence caught on tape translate into a TV deal for pool? You also have to know the actual numbers when it comes to how many pool fans are really out there. I would say it is very few number wise. Pool also has a problem with a connection to products. You can't be sponsored by pool related products because the market is too small and the companies in the business have no budgets for that kind of advertising. The sponsor has the be a beer company or something like that, someone who thinks the people watching pool would be their customers.

Here is the bottom line, there are no numbers there to support it. Pool has no future on TV. The future is on the internet as live streaming becomes perfected. Here is the difference, and it is a big one. Pool on TV is restricted to the market that carries it. The internet is limitless. A live broadcast on the net can be viewed by many more people all over the world at the same time then any TV broadcast. In the future Movies will open on the net.

I heard Steven Spielburg discussing it. He talked about opening a movie on the net with no distributors, no movie houses taking a cut. The entire thing done in house by the movie maker himself. Here is the numbers he throw out. A movie cost say $10.00 to watch, and that is for the whole family. Multiply that times 20 million house holds world wide. That is $200,000000 in just a few days. It takes a major hit movie to produce that kind of money and it takes months. He said the average picture could produce the kind of money big hits make now. Faster and cheaper and all done in house by the movie maker.

People now have HD TV's in their homes that give you a movie theater experience minus the A.H. kicking your seat. This is the future, people won't go to the movies any more in the future. Now back to pool. This is where we want pool. World wide viewer-ship. The kind of numbers that really can bring in sponsors not to mention subscription rates. TV has nothing to offer the future of pool. Pool needs to look to the future and future is what we are doing right now you and me, the internet.

How you ask? If it's Shanelle Lorraine on TV beating a male pro. Then she would pull an Anna Kournakova. sp? Tennis reaped great benefits from her. So yeah I'm just going to say it. I think Shanelle could be the Messiah of pool.

Am I claiming she could make pool as big as other sports? NO WAY. All we need is a spike that would generate bigger cash payouts so that maybe hundereds of players can make a living at pool.

I think what is difficult for me to understand about your opinon is that the female players should be easy on the eyes, for lack of a better description, that you want the good-looking lady players to be in the limelight and to heck with the everyday-people-looking players. And if the easy-on-the-eyes player can play pool a little, like run three balls in a row, that's even better.

This 10 ball event has just got me so jazzed I can't sleep. I was just watching this video of Jasmin and it's an awesome interview after a big win over this week and how she likes to play against the men. They show some of her shots from the match too.

Just click on this link then click on interviews. There are some cool interviews with Allen Hopkins and others too.

Enjoy.

I am afraid your thinking is very narrow and small. Unfortunately your thinking is also baseless beyond wishful thinking. I don't get your meaning of "bigger cash pay outs so that maybe hundreds of players can make a living at pool".
Sports are not sports, they are industries where tens of thousands make a living from the sport/industry far beyond the players. You have the cart before the horse. Before you can make money you have to show me how I can make money as an investor.
Can I ask you how old you are, it might explain a few things?

I totally understand where you are coming from. My vision is for the females to actually win a match so that the audience has fun cheering for the underdog not just run three balls.

I do think Karen Corr is and awesome player but very boring to watch. For years she dominated the tv spotlight. There are already so many good looking talented female pros it shouldn't be too difficult. I have very high hopes.

And it's not my opinion that attractive people on television make for better ratings, it's a fact. I'm just dealing with reality and it's not my opinion that this is the way America should be.

After the performances of the women in the Predater 10 ball world championships I see a vision of very exciting matches on ESPN of the likes of Jasmin, Allison, Yu Ram Cha, Jeanette Lee beating top pros like Johnny Archer or SVB with the crowd going nuts.

Here's the kicker: we don't have to wait for one of these women to make it to the semis or the final to see it on tv. (Jasmin made the semis at the world 14.1 so it's already happened just not on tv)

They just need to start filming the women's matches earlier in the tournament. Like when they air the world 9 ball championship in the past they show matches from the early rounds.

I think mixing men with the women is great and will only help pool and I think any top male pro that is against it is not looking at the big picture and how it could lead to a big pay raise one day.

At last year's World 10 Ball in the Philippines Jasmin's matches were almost all on the TV table from the beginning of the tournament. Even now I year later I still see them aired as reruns. The commentators were gushing the whole time about a woman competing with the top male pros.

I think pool should be a genderless sport - at least at the highest level. Let the women play. As Macguy said most of them today would be simply donating to the tournament. I firmly believe that some of them however will rise to the occasion and will not only finish high but will begin to snap off events if they are allowed to play in enough of them.

I think it would pique public interest for a while until the novelty wore off. At that point people wouldn't think of pool as a man's world regardless of whether they women were winning or not. People would watch pool on TV and think "great, pool"....without the drama of men vs. women. However it would be quite a while before the gender card was played out and that could indeed be good for pool.

I completely disagree with bonuses for highest woman. I find it distasteful and unfair.

What if these ladies beat Earl Strickland and got themselves in the final four?

Would you watch it?
