Poolhall Junkies--Christopher Walken is awesome

This movie could have been great but it missed one very important thing Cowbell. The problem with us Poolplayers is movies like this isn't how we see the pool world and think it's bad, the rest of the world wouldn't like what we see as the real pool world and that's why pool movies and shows are the way they are. Like the hustlers or whatever it was on tv.

Which is a good point: any pool is better than no pool.

I went ten years without seeing this movie... because most everyone said it was a waste of time. I was at a friend of mines house (Chisolm) playing pool and he started referencing scenes from the movie and I said I had never seen it. My buddy went off and said someone who is into the game as much as I am should of seen it. Then he said I would love it because it was about pool, yeah the movie might not be great but my friend was right I enjoyed it.

It Beats a Poke in the Eye...

I didn't hate it as much as most. The movie has some good scenes in it. But the bad scenes in it tend to overshadow them. And some of the dialog will make one groan and facepalm.

But it's far from the worst pool movie I've seen.

PH Junkies was just OK,
Maybe it's because I compare all pool movies with the Hustler which was not only a great pool movie, it was a great movie.

This movie is terrible! Just because I like pool doesn't mean I have to like this crap, and it doesn't mean I am not supporting pool. You might not like the outcome if you tried to pull that buy your shot now it's my shot bullcrap in real life. The only thing you may have bought is a beat down.

It was better than the Baltimore Bullet.

Walken made that movie worth it. Pretty good, but take it with a grain of salt. Lot's of cheesy bits, kind of like a not so serious "Rounders", but with pool. I didn't care for the whole little brother sub-story appeal to teenagers thing. That was the worst part. Lot of funny lines though, and the Lion scene was the best part by far. If Walken wasn't in it, I would have given it any praise. It's still better than BB though...

Kids and teenagers are the future though, who should it appeal to?

I liked the movie, except for the Walken - go kick his @$$ part in the bathroom and the 2 rail safe bit. Buying the shot is brilliant since that's the kind of BS Joe would have pulled on him.

I see we're pretty split down the middle on this one which is rare on this forum so I will weigh in. I own it, I liked it. Yes, there are some things I didn't like about it, but I still liked it. And I still remember one time hitting the pool table right after watching it with the lion speech still fresh in my mind and played some of the best pool of my life.

I've always really liked this movie. It's a movie, not a documentary, so I choose not to be critical of the things that are obviously in there to appeal to non-pool players.

I remember seeing a "special feature" of sorts that said there was a scene they ended up cutting out of the movie where, at some point, Nick taught a younger Johnny how to shoot that 2-rail safety. If that was left in, then the comment in the last scene would probably seem a little less terrible.

One of my favorite things was that the "unmakeable shot" at the end is basically the bank shot from the opening scene of The Hustler. Thought that was a nice tip of the cap.

Yeah. I didn't like it when Thor was in the Avengers; I mean, he's not real. Also, that Jet Li movie that had people jumping 20 feet and almost flying...that was not real either. And the car races in Furious didn't really capture the true essence of drag racing, they totally would have crashed in real life. How are two hobbits going to make it all the way through Mordor, no way they make it past the giant spider.

Point being, documentaries aside, you have to suspend disbelief to some extent when you see a movie.

PHJ wasn't all that different than the numerous pointless and unwise banks in TCOM.

Yeah, Walken's weirdness is fun as usual, but he's slumming in this.

The whole wordplay scam was almost as ludicrous as Little Ricky Schroder playing a pool degenerate.

I didn't watch any of the movies you referenced, however they are fantasies, this is not meant to be. I also do not need instructions on how to watch a movie, thank you anyway. This movie has zero redeeming qualities. If the only argument is that Christopher Walken is in it, then that is not enough for me. I certainly can and do suspend belief in the name of entertainment when it is worth it, In this case it is not.

P.s. I never said anything about the color of money, although it is not great it is light years from this movie.
