poolhall smoking

OK, the next time I go to a pool room, I'm going to tie a few dead skunks to my jacket, light off some fireworks and then jerk off to some porn right in the middle of the establishment. I hope my offensive habits don't bother anyone, but I am what I am, and I can't change. And I'm not letting big brother tell me what I can do. None of my habits actually cause any damage to anyone else, unless I burn the place down with the fireworks........other than that, I should be good to go !!!

If the OWNER of the place ok's it, go ahead.

If he doesn't, then what?

A lot better than it would if crack cocaine was legalized. :D

(snip)
Russ

Why? Four times more people now use "illegal" drugs than before the DEA was formed. Is that better than before when people had a free choice?

And THE question: Do you own everyone else?

Nope.

Now, let's address the issue of people who become so addicted that they break and enter their neighbor's houses to steal stuff to sell so they can buy drugs.

Bad.

Well, it's all the "state's" fault for making the drug illegal, right?

Well, what would you have us do? Provide state-sponsored drugs to whoever wants to get high?

Does not sound like a recipe for a productive society, considering how damaging some of these drugs are.

Theft is a crime....a REAL crime...you know one with a VICTIM.

Next.

You did not answer my question, Jeff.

Russ

Of course I did numerous times on just this thread...you apparently don't like the answer.

So let's do it again, shall we?

If you don't own others (as you said you don't and I believe you), then you can't force them to act as you wish they would even if you imagine they'll harm you somehow when they haven't yet. If you don't like the behavior of the pool hall owners, their rules of being in their places of business, and don't like the smoking allowed there, it is very simple: don't go there. Now all are happy with no guns required.

Some of you skoffed at the lost liberty argument, but remember pool, not smoking has a longer history of being relegated to the bottom of society's values.

I could make all the same arguments for banning pool that have been made in favor of banning smoking. These have been made many times and pool has (is!) suffered from it greatly.

Would you be so flippant about liberties lost if pool were outlawed?

move to canada, its illegal to smoke indoors outside of someone's home. or like 30 meters from a public entrance.
dont know if its like that everywhere in canada but where i live it is.

the 30 meters thing might just be a by-law

Donny....

To attempt to answer your question directly. Pool rooms are not there for the pros. The vast majority of pool rooms are not concerned with how good a player is, or may get. They're not concerned about big action games. In short, they're not in business to provide an avenue for someone else to make a living.

They're in business to make money. Many room owners see people who smoke as a large client base. (unsure how true this is, but that's their view) Rooms host tournaments to make money off the people and friends that attend the tournaments. Rooms host big action games to make money off rail birds, and other spectators.
If a room thinks it will loose more business by NOT having smoking, then they'll petition to have their rooms designated as smoking rooms, or private clubs.
If pool rooms (and I know a few that already do this) see that a new clientele that doesn't smoke will start coming to their rooms if it's smoke free, then they'll make that change.

So... to answer your question. The logical answer is.. It's all about the money a room owner will or will not make.

I wish the smokers who responded to this thread would all try e-cigs. They work wonders! I have not smoked for 6 months and don't have any cravings at all.

Mine should be here in a few days, last I checked the order status. I have a friend who's been on them for a few months now and loved them.

Good luck with the electronic cigarettes.
I guess you have not been to a pool hall in Illinois for a while?
Some of them actually disregard the LAW and allow smoking.

St Louis County goes SMOKE FREE 1/2011.
Less than a year. Forced smoking ban at every public place.

Heh, funny anecdote: 1/3/2009 we head across the river to some of the less respectable "dance" clubs, only to be told we can't smoke in there. we left. a month later a friend tells me the clubs are allowing smoking and just paying the fines as they come because it's cheaper for them to pay the fine instead of losing the business.

I actually haven't been to any pool room in IL - but I only just discovered 'The Break', in Cahokia about two weeks ago. Haven't been there yet though.

The county always does the wrong thing... they denied the public transit system funding too; forcing the close to countless bus routes and metro trains. I hate the county sometimes.

Harold: Remember the Maine, Plymouth Rock and the Golden Rule?
Oho, we got trouble
We're in terrible, terrible trouble
That game with the fifteen numbered balls is the devil's tool

Townspeople: Devil's tool

Harold: Yes, we've got trouble, trouble, trouble

Townspeople: Oh, yes, we got trouble here, we got big, big trouble

Harold: With a 'T'

Townspeople: With a capital 'T'

Harold: And that rhymes with 'P'

Townspeople: That rhymes with 'P'

Harold: And that stands for pool

Townspeople: That stands for pool

Harold: Remember my friends, listen to me,
because I pass this way but once

Well, I would sue his dumb ass, of course. Seriously, should we leave the safety of others up to the "owner", does he have the skills, knowledge, etc to provide a safe enviornment. If there were no electircal codes, the pool rooms would be wired like a shack in some third world country. And of course, the pool room employees, waitresses and such I assume are not much concern for the pool room owner!! Yes, they can get jobs else, but cannot the other jobs that are no required to have adequate ventilation, protection devices, etc supplied by the owner. When the pool tourneys began to go smokless, it was not a problem, folks still showed up, and they still show up for leagues in pool rooms in Illinois. The ones crying about business drying up is most likely from their inadequate business skills, not some smoking ban. I'm sure someone, somewhere complained about the "cost" of removing asbestos from their buildings years ago...

ummm no

Ummm, no, it's called an addiction, it's not a choice. You smoke because you can't quit and have not sought any assistance in quiting. Just because your addiction is going to bring you untold harm, don't infect the rest of us.

And Pool room owners can also chose, they can chose to go into the tobacco business and just sell cigarettes and cigars, as they are legal to smoke in those stores in Illinois. If they don't like the rules, then quit the freaking game. But to argue they soley have the right to determine who they are going to poison today; customers, employees, vendors, etc., is udderly ridiculous. If they care this little, I dare ever peak into one their kitchens while food is being prepared. No govenment is going to tell "them" to wash their freaking hands before they serve food or that expiration dates actually have a meaning!!!

I've not read this thread.

The truth is that smoking in publlic is abuse of the right to smoke. Anytime one does things that hurt others then it's abuse of the right to do what you want. Nobody has the right to do anything that hurts others. It's that simple.

The garbage disposal may be the dumbest ever human invention, they serve no purpose and only cause problems.

Dumber than cigarettes??????????????

That isn't the point. The point is, if the government can ban public smoking, or garbage disposals, they can ban anything. Maybe playing pool in public??????

Steve

Maybe they can ban anything. After all, it's the big bad EEEEEEVILLLL government, out to take all our freedoms and liberties away, all in the name of stomping all over the common man.

Yup. I bet banning pool-playing is right up their on the list of things to ban.

As opposed to actually trying to make a proven harmful KILLER less available to folks, and thus trying to discourage it's continued use, not to mention limiting exposure of said KILLER to those who aren't trying to consume it.

I know, you aren't paranoid, you KNOW they're out to get you, right?

you could just fight back at the smokers.
You have to take the smoke, right because it's their right to do so....

Just eat a head of cabbage and 8 or 9 boiled or deviled eggs, etc...

Then wait for the fireworks when you both light up...

If I have to smell their shit, they can smell mine.

Playing pool in public? Are you kidding? That doesn't hurt people. You don't seem to think with logic. Another thread I think you posted something about an unknown road player that you would back against any pro.
