Porper Vs Hightower

porper vs hightower

You can't compare them, they are totally different designs. The Porper B is a bench metal lathe and the Hightower lathes are much more portable.

So like I said you really can't compare them in any respect.

I own 2 Porper lathes, and I have used a Hightower Deluxe. I would not take anything way from either machine but if you want something with the power and precision of metal lathe you may want to look closely at the Porper.

Both have good service and both are good products.

Oh and by the way, you will most likely get many responses to your question. Before you listen to people ask them if they have any experience using these machines, it seems some people just like to talk without having enough experience to do so.

I have a hightower..do you think the porper is more accurate (precision)?
thanks, If so, please explain.thanks,
Bill

Bill like I said above I believe the Popper B will function like and is designed like a metal lathe and that the Hightower products are not. Now I am not taking anything away from the Hightower Machines, I am only making a comparison. I personally do not think the Porper B and the Hightower machines should be compared to each other. While they both will get the job done when it comes to making cues the designs are very very different and that is why there is a cost difference between these machines.

If were going to make a comparison, I would compare the Porper B to a metal lathe and the Hightower machines to the other lathes that are made in similar fashion like the Unique products and others lathes that are similar. But, in reality the person who started this thread has most likely never used any of these machines so like most he would not understand these comparisons.

As for as percission is concerned when I am turning a dowel that is 30+ inches long, using the screw feed and a router in my tool post I can hold a tolerance of + or - .0002 thousands from end to end.

I have never used a Hightower lathe for this purpose so maybe it can do the same thing I do not know, please try it and post the results.

No offense intended to anyone, sorry if it sounded that way.

I can usually get .0015 to .0025+/- (depends on my patience level) over 30 inches with my Hightower which I am happy with I have never tried to get it any better over that distance I believe I would need a better table or a nice 1/2 " thick milled aluminum base to mount it to
I don't know about .0002

Thanks for your information it is very close to what I expected.

I just went in the shop I haven't turned anything in 2 weeks I do all my work on one machine I have another Hightower that I use for finish and wraps but it was set up for coring dowels that I had took a few passes on a couple weeks ago and I did a light pass on a piece of tiger that was 22" long and the results were 1.4665 and 1.468...........which I was happy with now that I have read this I want to see how much better I can get it thanks for making me ignore the 9 by 20 I am picking up Thursday that I have no idea what I am going to do with yet;)

What does that have to do with the machine capabilities????? You shocked me by your post.

I am surprised you are so easily shocked. It has nothing to do with capabilities, just bang for the buck. I did not know the original poster asked just about capabilities. We could compare capabilities for price. Let's deck them both out to the $5000 range and then compare capabilities.

I have a great lathe for repairs and want to upgrade, would like some input and reviews on Hightowers deluxe lathe vs Porpers B lathe. Thanks for any input.

Price is certainly part of "input and reviews," and is a consideration for almost all of us. I don't know why these Hightower vs Porper threads seem to generate so much tension... Product reviews and comparisons are useful in all industries. I for one, hope we can continue with some objective feature comparisons without the drama.

Out of center? Runout? If I remember correctly they have had issues with the spindle bearings, which can cause that problem.

Here's my stand point, Not that it matters, and not that you know about it, Helped sell lathes and other products for yourself and for Creative Inventions, and absolutely no where in what and why I tell people about either product have I EVER, mentioned price. I am completely neutral on both. So to me and I'm truly sorry, You lost points by your post because all of us who posted had both companies covered in responding respectfully without the money.

Chris since we going down this road, who came out with the first machine that looks and operates like your's, were you the first person to introduce a product like it into the market place!?

Yes Craig, that really sucks because I have a machine that don't work properly and cost to much, for what I can do whit it............

I think I would be the first.

What year was that Chris?
Which one do you want to know about? The Micro Cue Smith, The Full Size Cue Smith, The Mid Size Cue Smith, The Deluxe Cue Smith, or the Inlay machine? I have a rough idea of the year each was introduced. 91 through 95 takes care of all but the Mid Size. It was introduced later in the 90s.
