Powder or not

My hands don't sweat, no powder or glove.

I owned a pool room, what amazed me is people head for the powder. Nothing wrong with a little resistance but I realize some people have a problem. My tables sometimes looked like snow in July. Just like everything people are known to abuse a good thing. Eventually I took out powder, and any cones. Buy a glove or have sense to use power sparingly. It only takes a little, more won't help at all. Besides I might and have, played on the mess you leave.

Some people might jump on me for this but I like to use an old green scratch pad to run the shaft with evewry once in a while. WORKS PERFECT, If you arnt using an expensive stick or a collectors cue. I dont see the problem. I can understand why that might be bad. but it I dont mind buying a new $100 shaft once every five or six years.

Thanks for the correction, Cardinal. In view of what I have learned, that all matches at the WPC have referees that do the racking, I'd have to say that the use of talc/powder is OK in the WPC. As long as the players using talc/powder don't handle the balls, everthing is fine.
 
Just wash your hands & cue........

I've been playing for 44 years and have never used powder & or a scuffer. You will notice that a lot of great players always have a damp & dry cloth on the side table when they play. I always do. It is the best way to keep your shaft & hands dry & smooth. All powder does is close up the pores of the skin and eventually cake up & get sticky.
I'll never understand why anyone would ever use a scuffer on his or her cue tip. I think most do after a miscue to convince themselves and all others that the miscue was the cue's fault & not theirs.
The chalk itself is an abrasive & when applied properly it will keep the tip in perfect shape.

There is a kid that plays in a local tournament in the town I live in that wears two gloves at all times. I get a good laugh out of it everytime I see him. If you ever want action when you walk in to a poolhall bring two gloves. Or just one on your non-bridge hand.
 
I got into a prtetty interesting conversation one time about the glove with someone that used it, and they were petty good. I think an apa 7. He said it does two things for him, one the easly slide of course, and the other, It made the staight line of his shaft stand out more from his bridge hand.

Ive also heard That playing on a dark dark colored table is harder because the shadow of the pockets dont stand out more. I bealive that one.

And that the six ball is the hardest on long shots because its green like the felt..... Dont know about that one.
 
Only 2 Reasons To Wear A Glove !

There are only 2 GOOD reasons to wear a glove while playing pool.

#1 - Your playing outside and it is very cold.

#2 - You Sell Them.

Seriously - I knew Gene, "The Glove" and spent some time with him in Detroit back in the late '70's. Very nice man & VERY funny. He is the originator of this concept and played very well with it. I only hope he is receiving the credit he de$erves for these.

For years I have been watching players use "baby powder" to make their shafts slide ...unfortunately, there is "LANOLIN" which is a moisturizer...not a substance to DRY your hands...
if you must use something , use a real "TALC"..which helps dry your hands...
using a glove ..looks weird, but is quite useful if your hands get sticky.
and of course, wash and clean your hands often.

Earl Strickland wore 2 gloves in the WPC....i think it was either a baseball or a golf glove.

Im sorry but im new to the game well 1 year old so new. And my hands sweet power does not work and i find it messy. So why not wear a glove its always smooth. I think the glove it the way if you want a smooth slide if your hands dont sweat.

On the subject of the glove, I've noticed that most three cushion players seem to wear one. Over the years, though, I haven't seen many serious pool players that wore one. I'm sure there's a reason, but I can't come up with it. So I put this question to the fourm: Why is the glove so much more popular among three cushion players than pool players?

Yep. I've seen JJ use powder. Also seen Bustamante, Sambajon, and Pagulayan do the same. Maybe Pinoy players are less antiseptic. I use chalk, but always wipe my hands with a towel before handling the balls. As for the table, although I've seen Sambajon make a mess of it before, I haven't noticed it behave very differently so long as one uses the talc sparingly.

Its obvious - they are more intelligent, and more secure in their masculinity.

P.S. - I love it because I can practice for long periods without having to fuss with powder/shaft cleaning etc. The feel is always the same, changes very little even when the shaft gets fairly sticky - has to improve my game.

Danger! Rosin may be hazardous to the way the balls and cloth react, IMO.
 
My wife bitches about my powder. Not really, but she does notice. Maybe she even uses that to see if I actually did go to play pool that evening. What she sees is baby powder on the right thigh of my pants.

I'm a lefty so I put powder on my right hand. Before I put my hand on the table, I brush my hand on my pants to get any excess powder off. That way I don't put marks on the cloth.
