Power question,

Jeff De luna is very small and hits them with his legs like Mike Tyson followed through with his punches find the U Tube video of De luna and check out a little guy with a big break.--Leonard

ok how do a player increase the velocity, being stiff from the gym slowes evertything down, or being muscle bound. I think there is a coorelation between slow/fast twitsh muscle fibers and the coordiantion to put your body into the shot to get the BIG power. I personally dont have the coordanation, or ability to spell, sorry. I have ran alot of 4 packs in my life but never 5 the break AWALYS stops the run for me, I did run 4 on a Diamond, one game was the 9 on the snap so it was really 3.

Hey FB,

Try swimming before you play pool (if you have access to a swimming pool). You don't even need to do laps for hours or anything. Just swim for 30 mins to an hour.

I don't swim much anymore but when I was going regularly and then go out to play pool I noticed my muscles were very relaxed and stretched. Does wonders for your stroke and I imagine if you are trying to get more into your power break this would help a lot.

my pool is 80'X40' but..............cold real cold.

My break is terrible, I cant get my body into it I just dont have the coordinatian, I actually spell better than I break. i'm going to bed now but am going to read this thread very carefully tomarrow, perhaps I'll learn something, thats one of the reasons I started this thread.

thanks to all

SBV was great again congrats.

It's definitely good to have an agile body, but the little thing here, like discus throwers, they roar like Tarzan after the discuses left their hands (after effects). Same goes for breaks, apart from the strokes, any other body movements like jumping or skipping etc should be the after effects of the breaks (result of generating cue speed) and not purposely jump or skip to do the breaks. The main focus is on the strokes (arm/shoulder).

Technique and hand speed.

Each can be improved some, depending on body style and natural athleticism.

Hey fatboy, even if you can't do all the things in the video, you can use some of the points Colin makes for an improvement over where you are now.

There is something to be said just for muscles. My friend is 165 lbs or so... he works 50-60 hours a week doing underground digging with augers and by hand. I'm not sure if you have them in your bar, but we have a video game that you hit the boxing bag and then that registers a number how hard you hit it. His score is 922 out of a possible 999.

This fellow is probably a C player based on the rankings. But if you asked me who hits the balls the hardest, no on in the region can compare. I can work out for the next 10 years and wouldn't be able to generate the power that this guy can. it is sickning. I think some just have it... all of the rest of us have to work on it.

Great topic Fatboy.I consider myself to have a fairly powerful break.I have studied the movements over the years and felt my bodies motions while improving my power and accuracy in breaking.
The break stroke is the most unique of all the strokes in pool. The reason for that is that the move itself is actually athletic in nature. You don't see someone's back heel coming off the ground while drawing the cue ball back for position in a normal shot.I know a guy that was a star football player in high school that can't play a lick of pool. However,he breaks like a monster!Reason is because he is an athlete and the break is an athletic move.
There are 2 things needed to generate power in a break.Denseness(or solidity) and speed. That simple. Those two things combined create power. But the thing is this, both are not achieved the same way.Denseness is simply achieved by a center hit on the cueball and a center hit on the one ball.Speed is a completely different animal and quite frankly the very thing that seperates monster breakers from the rest.Steve Mizerak had a great nine ball break in his day. However,he didn't have a power break. He got plenty of denseness into the break, but not a lot of speed.Hence,he was never known as a power player. So the combination of speed and denseness is what creates a power breaker like Larry Nevel,Jon Kucharo,etc..
To achieve speed in a break stroke, one has to know how to use his entire body correctly. If you watch a good breaker in slow motion, study his lower body.Shane VanBoeing makes this lower body move in an exaggerated way.You could watch him in regular speed and see it.Anyway, much like a golf swing, the body acts like a coil in generating speed at impact. The energy goes from the feet into the legs into the hips into the torso into the shoulders into the arms and into the hands to ultimately release outward into the cuetip.Nobody had a better followthrough than Johnny Archer. He was spread eagle over the whole table at the end of his followthrough.
So the power breakers have learned to combine denseness and speed without losing control.A gift indeed that most can't achieve IMO.I look at a power breaker much like I look at a long hitter in golf. There is just that edge they have that makes them do what they do.

well said, he problem I have is i'm just not athletic at all, i cant catch a ball, if th CB comes off the table rools over to someone if they toss it to me from 5 feet away i'm not a favorite to catch it, its that bad,

Bodybuilding is different activity than sports of any kind and not a bit athletic, its a mind connecting to muscle dicipline and takes along time to learn, power and olimpic lifting are althetic you incorporate timing and strength,

I have good reflexes for pin ball and video games, but thats my fingers. I cant get my body into the break shot at all, SVB just kinda stands up, I might be able to do that, with instruction, I have a friend with a good break gonna try and help me, he has one of the best breaks ever, please DONT maention his name if you know who he is. Anyways I hope I can get it down. I have great balance too, for thinngd like walking on big boulders.rocks, in the mountains etc. I have zero rythem i cant dance. etc.

thanks for the help, sorry this post is kinda patchy with my thoughts i just woke up. i didnt sleep good.

I'm not talking about the best break here just raw somewhat controlled power, i assumed that we all know that as the power inceases the accuracy goes down,

Archer is a big guy too and he cracks them hard as well,

so yeah all around SVB and Tony Ellin have the best of both, but I want this thread to be about power not who breaks the best.

POWER POWER POWER NOT ACCURACY FOR THIS THREAD PLEASE,

thanks gentalman,

Speed = Power.

That's why I enjoy one pocket more and more as I get older. One pocket and 9-Ball are both dominated by the break, but anyone can learn to a good one pocket break. Some guys just never do get a good 9-ball break and that will always limit your game. My dad, when he was playing his best, played pretty much as good as anyone. Problem was, he never had a break. No matter how good he was shooting, it wouldn't matter against the big boy's, if you can't keep them in the chair you can't win.

Shane standing up isnot a move,it is a result of using his entire body. All great breakers come up to some extent. They have to,otherwise they will fall straight down after running into the table with their legs and hips. All that released energy has to go somewhere.
Anyway, good luck with your break. It took me about a year of hard practice to develop a real break stroke. It paid off though:)

I watched that video a couple times and I have zero chance of having the coordiantion to break great. :(
