Just as expected, the $5,000-added Season Finale held at Orange Ball Billiards in Rockville, Maryland, commenced with a whopping 103 players in attendance, and the field has been whittled down to 24 players, each hoping to pocket the $2,500 in first-place prize monies. The Planet Pool 9-Ball Tour has a ranking system, available in full disclosure on their website, http://www.planet-pool.com. The highest-ranked players were seeded for this end-of-the-year tournament, and as is customary, it will pay out three-eighths of the field.

At the players' meeting, some of the details of the next season were greeted with enthusiasm when it was announced that the game of 8-Ball will be included on the tour in addition to the 9-ball tournaments. I'm an 8-ball lover and plan on competing next season! Phil Capelle has a new book out on 8-ball -- 'Play Your Best Eight Ball' by Phil Capelle -- and I've got a few months to study up and strengthen my skills before I make my debut! :p

New England was represented in the form of Young Guns Tony Ruberto and Jarrod Clowery. Jarrod has been MIA recently on the tournament trail, but he decided to make the 8-hour trek with Tony to Maryland. Both were action-ready after hours and managed to make a few scores to pay for their trip. ;)

Ted Harris is on hand, much to the delight of the players, providing on-site cue maintenance. He donated a custom-made beautiful cue stick for a raffle, and tickets are selling like hot cakes for this purpleheart masterpiece! BTW, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Teddie!

Some other familiar faces in the crowd were Richmond's Local Champion Larry Kressel, Ryan "Genie Man" McCreesh, Pookie, APA Champ Jim "Shorty" Henson, "Jimmy Mack" McAdams, Virginia Veteran Billy Stephens, Roadster Wayne Collins, Jump-Ball Mechanic Danny Green, MD's best-kept secret "Max," BCA Instructor Doug Sharp, 10-year-old Tyler, UPA Touring Pro Mike Davis, just to rattle off a few names that come to mind. Jose Parica, who told me last weekend he was coming, was a no-show.

The feature match of the day took an unusual twist when Tour Directors Nick "The Bald Guy" Prinsloo and Andy Lincoln faced off in a tension-filled showdown on the front table to a full gallery of specators. Racing to 9, Andy had Nick stuck 8 to 2, and Nick sat motionless in his chair with the look of disbelief, helpless to stop Andy's strong run. What happened next was the stuff pool dreams are made of. You could cut the air with a knife, and all eyes were on Table 3. Nick never gave up and brought the score to the infamous hill-hill. After Andy missed a 5-ball, Nick seized the moment and won the match. Both players put on an hard-fought exhibition, much to the delight of the railbirds, and when it was all said and done, Nick came out the victor.

At 12:00 noon today, Sunday, it will be Pookie vs. Keith McCready. Last evening, Pookie uncharacteristically left the pool room to go home and rest, even though he was propositioned by quite a few hoping to get into his pockets. Earthquake is hoping to send the Virginia Young Gun to the B side of the charts. I'm hoping to feel the ground shake in Rockville today, but Pookie is a tough competitor, and it is anybody's guess as to who will come out on top.

The one-day Ladies Open event, starting at 11:00 a.m., will be run simultaneously with the second day of the Open Event. Just wanted to provide a snippet of the activities! Never a dull moment at the PP 9-Ball events, and this one is no exception.

There's a showdown with two gunslingers at high noon today between a young and cocky Pookie, full of confidence, and Keith McCready who is hoping to be Pookie's worst nightmare! ;)

Thanks, JAM. Have to say, I enjoy the way you cover events. I like the way you offer a feel for what it's like to be there and you do a nice job of sharing your energy and enthusiam for the events you attend.

Congratulations to Brett Stottlemyer of Pennsylvania

Thanks for your kind words, SJM.

The finals of the PP 9-Ball Tour ended up in an exciting hill-hill match between Brett Stottlemyer of Pennsylvania and Keith. When Brett sunk the case 9-ball in for the win, he had to catch his breath and then let out a victory cheer. He got a standing ovation, and his wife had to wipe away a few happy tears. She told me later that nobody has worked harder than Brett when it comes to playing pool, and winning the season finale was really meaningful to both of them. She said the $2,500 first-place prize monies is sure going to come in handy for Christmas.

At the last Planet Pool 9-Ball tournament in Hagerstown, Brett went to the finals and met a determined Nick Maninno who doubled-dipped him from the B side of the charts in true double elimination format. Some of you may remember Brett as a regular player on the action table in Valley Forge! He's a regular player on this tour, and it's nice to see one of the PP 9-Ball family win the season finale! The second-place prize was kind of sweet for Keith, to the tune of $1,600! :D

The new season of the Planet Pool 9-Ball Tour will begin in January 2005. Check out the website for the new announcements about some upcoming events: Planet Pool 9-Ball Tour website

Brett and I have played regularly at Ivory Billiards in York Pa. warming up for the Sunday 9 Ball tournament. Great to see his work on his game come through with this win. When we are warming up for the tournament he is nice enough to play a cheap game if I mention it, or if I don't say anything, he just plays for fun. Saves me a bunch of money. Vary nice guy. Congratulations Brett!

Congratulations to Keith too on his good weekend.

Just to post a note of interest, Captain JR, the PP 9-Ball Tour next season will have an event in Pennsylvania. This tour keeps getting bigger and better, thanks to the hard work and efforts of the staff: Nick "The Bald Guy" Prinsloo, Andy Lincoln, and Cece! :)

When I glanced at the photo of Brett on AzBilliards home page this morning -- Photo of Brett Stottlemyer in action -- the picture of him resembled one of those super-action heroes. :p

The tables at Orange Ball Billiards were breaking beautifully for the players this weekend. I saw Ryan McCreesh make 4 and 5 balls on the break. When Pookie knocked Keith in the losers' bracket, the break was the determining factor, leaving Keith benched most of the match. Keith only had five shots the whole match in a race to 9, and three of the shots were safety plays made by Pookie. The players were using a medium-speed break, and the balls blossomed out like a flower.

One of the unique features about this tour is the close-knit family of regulars, which is growing each year. There's a comradery amongst the players. Every single person was excited to see Brett Stottlemyer in the winner's circle. When I saw his wife wipe away her happy tears, my eyes began to fill up. This is the stuff that dreams are made of, and I can't wait for the new season to start! :)

I have to second that one SJM, JAM has the knack for writing. Anytime I see one of her posts, I go to it first because it's always so thorough, never leaving anything out for us to wonder what happened. Peace.

Hey Jam,

I was happy that I could make it to this event after a work schedule change shut me out of most of the season. I look forward to playing in alot more next year.

I'd have to agree that Nick, Andy and CeCe do a great job and run a top notch tournament. If anyone out there gets a chance to play one of these events, by all means, give it a go. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Also Jam, where will the PA event be or is that still to be determined? I know Nick said at the players meeting he was still in negotiations on some of the locations.

Thanks,
Scott

Scott, Cece told me yesterday that one of the prospective host pool rooms is located in the Lancaster, PA area.

Lots of pool enthusiasts and players in Pennsylvania! I've always thought Luc "Machine Gun" Salvas was the FASTEST player I'd ever witnessed until I got a chance to see a Pennsylvanian by the name of Mike Miller in action. After this guy shoots a ball, before it hits the pocket, he's already aiming for the next shot. That's what I call confidence. I saw him beat Santos, Keith, and Frankie Hernandez at a tournament hosted by Diamond Billiards.

An interesting comment was made to me from a fellow railbird yesterday which speaks volumes about the caliber of play on the Planet Pool 9-Ball Tour. When the Keith McCready vs. Ryan "Genie Man" McCreesh match was in progress, he stated to me that it was a shame that these players aren't performing in front of 5,000 spectators because their level of play is worthy. Kind of a nice compliment to the pool players on this tour (IMO)! :)

Thanks for the info. I'll definitely keep my eye out for that one.

As to the level of play, I'd have to agree. The top players in these events can play with anyone, anywhere. Unfortunately, I'm not in that class yet, but I stll love to throw my money in and compete. In a single set, you just never know.

That's why I drive 3+ hours to play. Win or lose, I thoroughly enjoy watching the game played at a high level.

I can't wait until next season starts up.

Congratulations to Brett on his big victory and to Keith for his runner up finish. This tour does sound like it's really well run, maybe the UPA should take some notes.

I was planning on giving the Planet Pool Tour a try next year, at least a couple times. I was thinking about last month at Hagerstown Md. but I was already committed to Pa champ 8 ball in Lancaster. They were just to close together for me to go to both ($). I'm planning on going to the events they have in Hagerstown next year and of course anything they have in Pa. I'll be there.

I'll feel right at home, Brett beats me up all the time!! (but, I'm improving all the time too)

In that picture of Brett, His facial expression gives a bit of a stern impression and he sure can concentrate, but as I mentioned above, he's a good guy.

You'll be glad you made the decision to try out the Planet Pool 9-Ball Tour, CaptainJR! In the two or three seasons I've been going, I've seen players' games improve immensely, which is why I'm hoping to give it a shot next year, especially the 8-ball tournaments. Look for JAM wearing her glasses on a field of green. Like Fast Eddie in TCOM, I'll be back! :p

There's a young fellow named Andy Duty who attends just about every event. He takes his game very seriously, and many times, his mom and brother are rooting him in on the rail. I've seen his game improve 100 percent since he's been playing on the tour. Last few times him and Keith have matched up in the tournament, it's been a nail-biting hill-hill, and he's beat Keith on more than one occasion. In a race to 9, if you're hitting 'em good, anybody can win. It's all a matter of drive, and the PP 9-Ball Tour brings the best out in every single player.

Brett is a great guy. His wife plays in the ladies event, too. We always enjoy running into him on the tournament trail. In the finals, of course I was pulling for Keith, but when Brett sunk the case 9 in for the win, I couldn't help but be happy for him. If you could have seen the look in his eyes, the thrill of his victory, it sure was exciting. He's one of the good guys for sure, and one to watch next season!

Looking forward to meeting you, CaptainJR. The next season begins in January, right around the corner! :)

Too Nice

JAM -It was great to see you and Keith this weekend, we missed you guys at the last couple of events. You are too nice for your own good. You are right about one thing - it has become a family, to me especially. I love my guys and gals.

We are starting 8 ball events for next year - the spots for those events are going like hot cakes. And we are pending the PA tournament. It sounds like we'll have quite a few new guys coming, so we'll post that one way ahead of time.

Just in case I haven't met some of you, go onto the Planet-Pool web site (www.planet-pool.com) go to pictures, by event, and select the Dec 4-5 pictures - choose the second page of pictures - Nick posted one of the best pictures of me yet - The ladies on Sunday started the second set of the finals at 11:40 - and we were all a little loopy by then. They left the table to go on break - and I couldn't resist - you'll see it by the picture. :D

If I had not said it before - HAPPY HOLIDAYS and I hope you all return safely for a new season next year!!!
