Practice what I Preach

Good morning Thursday Apr 17, 2025
A tribute to Mr O'Cock, my high-school math teacher that had taught my mother. Weaverville is A small town 🤷‍♂️. Mr O'Cock had competed in the Olympics in ice skating (probablyin the 30s). He came from one of the north east states. He had an unusual style that promoted thinking.
It was easy to get him into story mode. And edumacational if you stayed awake. 🤷‍♂️
Most considered him a dodering old man who's classes were cool and amusing. Even better than study hall. 🤷‍♂️ There was a lot to learn from him. Life's lessons as told by Mr O'Cock. I paid attention! I aced the math tests. In my sophomore year there was a senior in my algebra class. A senior that had received a football scholarship to Colorado. He still needed algebra to graduate. Mr O'Cock seated him next to me.
I had not considered playing football as I was small. His athletic abilities covered All sports. He was definitely a natural. I got some cool stories and he got to gaze over my shoulder when the tests were being taken. I had been paying attention and didn't need coaching to keep my arm out of the way. Discreet Lee 🤷‍♂️. He was awesome at Colorado and played pro ball.
Wow, this story went sideways fast. Eek. I better get back to the table.

"Yeah, I am ready." Was the, no is the thought.
Running The Chase first now. I took a lot longer to get there but I/We? Finally got the Right hands side of the brain right. Lefty holds a 10-6 lead . That ain't nuthin going to 16.
The Chase was built upon information that dr_dave made available Gratis. Thank you Dr.

What are you chasing?

You got me into trying to play one handed the other day, prefered the dart grip, got a few balls in. But lefty ?!?
I believe steve davis used one handed shot in one of his tricks, but not lefty🙃

My theory on starting my Kicks Like A Mule with one handed is crawl to walk to run. With walk being an upright stance and run is chin on cue.
My rational for left vs right includes adding competition to the practice.
The Chase is a competition I built upon the shots in Colin's drill that I got from dr_dave's site.
Colin's Shot Making Drill from Dr Dave. Would make for a good challenge. I utilize it to play my left hand vs right hand. A successful shot scores and keeps the same hand shooting to the next shot. A miss returns the table to the other hand to resume with where that hand left off. Kind of fun to get a high run.

8 shots going both left and right for 16 total. The shot 1 is so difficult I moved it to last in my challenge. It makes a good grand finally shot. One hand getting stalled there can give the other a chance to catch up. 🤷‍♂️

Crawl-walk-run , no jump?😉
Seriously, how does one handed shot with no bridge applies to normal, bridged shot?
I dont want to be rude, it intrigues me. Can you elaborate please?

Sure.
It's my theory that one handed is dependent on a solid foundation and platform. Setting the feet and body position properly is what I expect to make a habit of in my one handed practice.
Then comes the mechanics which are my focus standing upright like Mosconi. The final position with chin on cue like the Snooker players becomes aim centric.
Willie Hoppe stressed go back and start again in his book. My morning routine of Kicks Like A Mule has me starting from the ground up daily.
My 3 point stance
Foundation
Mechanics
Mental or Computer.
Here's a good one on Mental.

nothing but pocket, sight, focus
I like it! Its like a shortcut, a transition to alpha state of mind.

The cold morning start is shot 2 in Colin's map.
The importance of following the formula. The most basic part is the most uh humble and even glossed over.
I started little league as a lead off hitter at 8! I barely had a strike zone was coaches strategy. I learned to like the feeling of standing at the plate awaiting the first pitch. Unknown and with a green light. I was mid stride as the ball was released. That's when the decision was made, swing or duck. Looking for the bb in the middle of the ball came from Coach Herb in high school. That translates or is my method hitting the cueball.
So when it just works on the first shot of the day. My head swells and I changed just enough to end the run at 1. Now to check the computer for analysis.
Self Analysis is not the best option it is however the First option.
Psychology was my first choice for major. Math was my strong suit. Survival was my Best skill.

Killer was the handle Cocomo hung on me.
He administered my first paid lesson of $20 at the White Spot Wednesday night 9 ball tournament $5 race to 3 bar box event.
A year and a half of self coached lessons from the Big Boys. Well that's when I was awarded a beer for a 7-8th finish. 🤷‍♂️
The lessons were there. I paid $5 a week for mine. 🤷‍♂️

It's a fitness program so as Willie Hoppe taught Go Back and start at the beginning. Well if you're just skimming.
I do not allow markers for my Colin's drill variation. Measuring and visualization of the grid is part of the workout. 🤷‍♂️
It's for my mental as well as physical fitness. Drawing my focus to Fine uses all the computer banks, so I have to look at the score to see what shot is next at the cue exchange. Then Re member what's 7? A small mental exercise.

Ah, the Training
McGoorty's version of Training involved him tieing himself to the rods in the undercarriage of the train cars.
Training is definitely Not one size fits all.
My good fortune in asking Backward Jan for lessons was made obvious by his immediate question, "what is Your goal."
Training from Coach McHargue took a 2 years skunked team to 31 straight victory. Started the record streak Iwith 13 players left on the football team. His Training was strenuous to say the least. I took it serious.
Our season started pre uh classrooms with 2 a day. I had preordained no pre trained with wind sprints during the summer. Which led me to lead the pack on The Hair Run. Each practice finished with a run the field length around the goal post and finish exiting the field.
That led Coach to put me at center weighing 156. 🤷‍♂️ Well no that's not accurate. After achieving All League at center, I asked Coach "why center?" I thought of wide end. 🤷‍♂️ He stroked my ego by statement that the first person to handle the ball is the most critical position. With the quarterback the second to handle the ball.....yeah he was important 2. I protection for his glory.
Where was I, oh yeah games had a 1 week schedule that was scripted. My best finish in a Big Boys tournament came after I took the luxury of following a targeted Training 2 weeks. Aiming to give my best possible performance. Couple the training with a soft draw and I got 2nd behind Jim Ward a true legend in the great north wet.

My training started parallel to a Bob Lilly quote, "It ain't the size of the dog in the fight. It's the size of the fight in the dog."
My kindergarten 10 mile bus ride had me riding the high-school bus. With the boys in the far back and girls in front. I quickly earned my first Nick Name of Spit in the Eye. The girls rescued me before I could be cornered in the back. 🤷‍♂️

"Grampa I gotta P." Ooops flashback 😉
The Pea in the center is what I should be aiming for.
Visualize the core pea then watch the tip pass through it to launch whitey. Notice the rotation of both balls at contact.
Okay, back to 2 a day has the Kicks Like A Mule for session 2.
The solution for station 3, the king ball That requires 3 or more rails provided a significant puzzle. (Well for me) 😉 So here's the playing field.

I explored a lot of options and was on the brink of Unobtainium. Then I found the answer (on this table).
I will show the, well my, solution in a later post.
The white at the far end must go 3 or more rails to the green stripe 14 ball.

My solution:

Going into the rail just before the pocket with significant Back it Up on the cueball. Looking at the strike to the white accelerates the learning curve.
It's an unexpected result so I shall play around with that shot adjusting the variables. 1 at a time.
3 rails to snuggle to the 14 ball provides a Trophy photo.

The Snooker available on the tell E is awesome. Judd vs Shaun an interesting match.
The looks at eye patern should be an interesting study.
The replay is available to my relief.
Study study study
Whiles I get a first look at Judds eyes and appear to be up at contact. 🤷‍♂️

Equal or favored is a nice option for the right and left. When "in the zone" there's no thought to which hand as the layout dictates which.
At the handshake he said, "You shot That Left handed!". I had to look down to see which hand held the cue. My reply was, "I guess I did. 🤷‍♂️ "

The Snooker lessons are awsome.awesome.
It's a musical instrument, not a club.
The ring finger as in playing the piano.
