Masters(Tweeten) still makes chalk without the american flag on it, not every market wants to see our flag on their chalk. So they manufactor blue, green, red, tan, and all other colors with out the flag to this day and will continue too as long as there are enough oreders too. I was told this by a BIG guy at Tweeten at the BCA trade show. Some countries hate us and dont want to look at the American flag. Iran might be on that list; It has to be a big order, so I'd bet that the pre-flag sold here on AZ is legit.
So if you buy no-FLag chalk you need to be sure its old, a good way to tell is if the wrapper comes off after a few hours play, that shows that theclue holding the paper to the chalk has deterioted, it the paper sticks on there the chalk might not be old. I have some Mahattan Club chalk thats around 100 years old and the chalk itself looks and feels new when you rub it with your fingers, its sand etc, and dosent show any age at all. I have some REAL old Masters and the wrapper awalys falls off I use it until its gone(I dont drill a hole down the middle, the sides wear down with the center)'. I dont know any other way to tell if its old. Once in a while I get a old pievce that sucks, but most of them are great, where as now days the new chalk it the oppsite, I find a good think the old stuff has more lead, the guy at the BCA said "Not that I'm aware of" he has worked there for around 20 years I recall him saying. who knows??? We need to find a lab, anyone have a suggestion???
I have had a few new pieces of chalk that have been great, so Flag chalk aint all bad, but a good piece is hard to find. I'm real picky about my chalk, real picky. More so than most people I'd bet.
There is also counterfit Masters chalk too, I had no idea. A friend of mine who is in the retail pool accorseries biz was in China on a biz trip to several vendors and sure enough he saw it there. I would love to see this stuff, I think its going to Europe mostly. It was $2.00/gross less than the real stuff I was told. In Germany all the blue Master chalk was sandy, grity and not as blue, I remember seeing some of that once in a while in the 80's I awalys figured it was a bad batch. That was only speculation as my thoughts about the junk going to Europe. I keep forgetting to bring a few bad pieces home from Germany, I'm going to next trip for sure if I see any.
