Predator 10 Ball Technical Rant

Open Windows Media Player, Then go to File, Open URL, and paste "mms://91.121.120.227/live.wmv"

There you go! No logging in necessary.

Did so and got the following error msg.

Windows Media Player cannot connect to the server. The server name might not be correct, the server might not be available, or your proxy settings might not be correct.

It's 10:45am central time. Did I get that msg because there is nothing being streamed at this time???

Thanks!

... you can use 'most any modern media player to view the video stream. I was very happy, for example, using WinAmp -- which is my personal choice for audio files, but can also be handy for other multimedia stuff.

GOM player also worked well. I have found it to be even more robust than VLC (recommended previously in this thread) when dealing with corrupt or incomplete files.

As for the posts, above, saying or implying that all the bugs should have been worked out before the streaming video was made "public" ... FOAD. We are the beneficiaries of someone's willingness to try very important new technology, and until or unless we have to pay for it, we have absolutely no standing to complain about the imperfections. Yes, it is frustrating, to have the video freeze or go black in the middle of a tense, high-caliber cueists' confrontation. And if this happens often enough, we will inevitably 'vote with our feet' and find something more reliable to capture our attention.

My own experience, though, with the Predator 10-ball video feed has left me only occasionally frustrated -- and far more often thrilled and grateful. My original sign-in to the website went smoothly, and I got a verification email within seconds of submitting my registration info. On the first day of coverage (Wednesday), I got a lot of glitches in the video stream; but over-all I found the feed worth watching -- even when I couldn't be sure who the players were or what the match score was. On Thursday, the video was much smoother, and there was live commentary (some of it truly excellent) to shore up the information deficit.

I'd like to say thank you to the event managers who had enough cajones to make the video happen, and who obviously did significant work to make improvements from Wednesday to Thursday. Please don't let a few spoiled complainers deter you from taking this to even higher levels in future tournaments.

1. Typical snotty, techno-brat remark*.

2. I don't know what FOAD means...and don't care.

3. There have been numerous reports of inaccess, freezing, etc. and virtually nothing in the way of expressions of concern let alone tech support from the sponsors. Fortunately, support has come from AZ members.

I would hazard a guess that a huge percentage of those who are even aware of the stream obtain that awareness right here on AZ. So IMHO, AFAIC and maybe even FOAD...they should have been aware of the issues and posted the workarounds that were posted by AZ members.

But OOOOPS...the WMP workaround would have defeated the personal data gathering aspect of the Predator registration process so ICYDK, that is why that workaround wasn't furnished excpet by talented AZ members.

If there is nothing streaming, that's why. Wait till the matches start again. I put in the url to try and got the same thing.

Concerning the media player, I recommend to download k-lite codec pack full or standard version (free) wich includes Media Player Classic. With this player you will be able to watch all kinds of media format. IMO it is the best free player right now, much more ergonomic than VLC.
but is there anyway to watch the stream at...

mms://91.121.120.227/live.wmv

Withh MPC???

Yes. Try clicking file->open ... It doesn't say 'open URL' or something like that AFAIR. I'm not too sure though and I don't have MPC with me. Then type in the link above. Try http://... (eg. http://91.121.120.227/live.wmv) instead of mms://... , the server will automatically redirect you to the mms stream server.

Some proxys are strict with addresses in numbers so use http://ns2014541.ovh.net/live.wmv just in case. HTH

I second what you said about the experience. It was a good one for me too in spite of some feed problems.

However complaining about the feed problems doesn't make people 'SPOILED COMPLAINERS".

Let me try... the user :D

Seriously, first, the live feed was bad. I've watched two matches yesterday and the streaming was very good and also well commented. :)

However, the way the online bracket is made is not my cup of tea. It's not up to date and there is no results !?!

agreed i recommend the k-lite codec pack too. all your videos should play effortlessly in MPC which a fast light little player. For those pesky troublesome video files which we sometimes ghave which we cant get to play use VLC. Cool program. It's got a traffic cone for it's icon - doesn't get much cooler than that! :D
