Predator Break Speed app

I'm sure this is out there somewhere, I tried the search function and can't find it though. Does this app actually give a good indication of your break speed? I want to give it a try but I'm cheap and don't want to throw 5 bucks away if it's trash.

Reports have been, overall, it is reasonably accurate. More importantly, I think it is precise. I would think the primary purpose for the app would not be to determine what your break speed is but to get a relative comparison while practicing.

Yep it does a pretty good job as long as the mic on your phone is good since it uses existing hardware.

As for finding it try searching for 'break speed'

The app works well and is very accurate (as compared to a radar gun set up). Well worth the $5 bucks, my man.

In that case it's exactly what I'm looking for. I've been rotating between breakspeeds way to much and want to find a consistant one given I actually hit the ball good. :) Thanks for the reply.

The only issue I've seen with it has been more user error than anything else.

The app requires that you show your cue ball placement on the table as well as choose the size of the table before you calculate the break speed. If either of these are done incorrectly, it will not give an accurate speed. The difference can be fairly significant.

The guys who created it originally are local to me here, and we played with it quite a bit way back when they were in development. They are smart guys and really put together a nice product.

Also, if you get an obvious error, like a 50 mph break, ot a 4 mph break, open the waveform and manually adjust it. You can zoom in on the details by swiping your finger on the screen.

Doesn't everyone here break at atleast 50mph besides me? ;) Thanks for the advice, it's nice knowing going in how to use it than to try to figure it out as I'm terrible with my phone. My 6 year old nephew knows how to run it better than I do.

Go ahead and get it. You will like it. Any questions on how to use it can be answered by a multitude here on AZ.

how exactly does it figure speed from the sound?
I would expect acoustics not to be an accurate indication of speed

Wow! This thread woke up from the dead!
It is very accurate. The app will pick up cue tip contact, and cue ball impact on the rack. If you set up the ball placement correctly on the app, it is as accurate as a radar gun. And it is pretty good at dismissing background noises in a busy pool room.

After using it for several years, I think it picks up most of the sound through the table itself. I surmise that because you put your phone on the rail near the cue ball. Put your ear on the table when someone breaks. It's pretty loud! And sound will travel through a solid object much faster then through the air.

It is a good tool if you use it correctly. Some people will use it just to see how fast they can break. If you use it to practice your speed consistency, then it is very useful.

I agree. Pretty Accurate as long as your set up is right. Simple Formula too. Even the Highway Patrol use it. Velocity is equal to distance divided by time.

It’s accurate enough. It gives an average velocity based on two peak sounds as opposed to the peak velocity of the cueball coming off the cue tip.
