Predator Ferrule Disaster

Hello Builders,

First please let me make it clear that as you will read I AM NOT A BUILDER!

I do however understand how Predator shafts are constructed and I had two custom tapered (Bob Manzino) with just over 1/2 inch Ivory Ferrules which as you know is significantly longer than predators standard.

At any rate I bumped my ferrule against the edge of my computer table (the sound was loud enough that i just couldn't understand why I couldn't find a huge gouge in the shaft, the next morning I found the damage a cracked ivory ferrule. Alright I painted that picteure heres where things get ugly.

I live in south Ga. and had to drive 2 hours one way to a so called cuebuilder/repairman. I am playing a major tourney this weekend (I have 4 shafts total (2xpred 2xManzino) and I wanted to a.) repair the ferrule and then have 2 tips put on.

The guy chucks my cracked predator spins it up and starts cutting. he cant believe his eyes as the Ferrule gives way and the Ivory is bored then soild at the tip. You and I know this is necessary because the shaft is hollow. He then goes would you look at that this ferrule is all wrong it should sleeve (like a typical non threaded ferrule) and I explained that with the thin tolerances of the end of the shaft and the fact that it is hollow and filled foam that you cannot do a typical ferrule. His reply thats not hollow it's sloppy work thats trash in the end of the shaft that should of been blown out see (he proceeds to ram a 6 inch ice-pick into the foam until the handle stops it from becoming a new insert in my shaft! needless to say and please tell me if i'm wrong but I WAS LIVID!

Now he has to figure out a way to "plug that hole" (I explined it was there for a reason and that is why the ferrule that he had just removed the ivory one was bored from inside then a nice thick piece was solid ivory that the void was okay.

Anyway I left with a melamine ferrule (which is bulging in the center) by the way I had to sell him on the fact that I DID NOT NEED and inch and a quarter ferrule on this shaft!

The melamine has a bloodwood insert that was glued into the ferrule before turning.

My primary question is can this be cut off without ripping the very thin shaft wall apart? My understanding is that Mr. Manzino went thru NUMEROUS predator blanks to find the two that he would build.

I've tried to reach him by phone and I don't know if i have the right contact info or not.

Do you guys think that anybody with any current knowledge of cues can fix this I do have another shaft for reference ( which this guy used and my new ferrule is about this --- much longer than the other one and i wanted it to be the same or LESS not more!

I apologize for the long post I'm just very frustrated I am in love with my Manzino cue both the Manzino Predator shafts hit great in their own way we all know the quirks of the two types of shafts no need to debate that.

Thanks for reading and I anxiously awaut any input.

I remain,

Niner

It sounds like you contained your self very well, I would've jumped over the counter and beat him sensless with anything handy!!
On the nicer side, next time ask if the person has any expereince with a predator ferrule before any work starts. Chris Hightower may be able to help you, I believe he's in Georgia. Good luck.
Dave

Not to mention on at least four occcasions i heard my shaft banging into stuff harder than wood, AAAARRRRGHHHH!

How is Melamine for ferrules? He implied that is was the latest greatest?

If not for time constraints I would of went back with Ivory, whats the best material for a FIRM hit these days price no issue.

I forgot to mention my new ferulle has beautiful intricate ring work as well three rings evenly spaced around the entire ferrule)

I just gave up said give it here what do i owe you your not touching the Manzino shafts and BYE!

ive done a few predators. i got the idea from mike gulyassy. he drills out the hollow and foam and glues a tennon then puts a normal threaded ferrule on.

pred now uses titan ferrules. clean up great, holds very little chalk and are very very hard. i only use 3 types of ferrules iovry, ivory x and titan

I needed the laugh.

Thanks Dave I needed the laugh. Another idea that Mike G. has taken from another cue man/repair man. Let me guess he told you he came up with that idea all by himself.

When you drill the shaft out and install a tenon then it wont play like a predator shaft was made to play. The hit is not the same at all.
It's not that hard to make a ferrule for the predator. It just takes some time.
Thats what cue repair and cue making is all about taking your time and doing it right the first time. That kind of fix is what I call TURN-N-BURN repair. Turn the work out fast and burn the customer.
If you cant fix it right. Send it to someone who can or send it back to predator.

Do you think MG. will try to patent that hack repair job? HA HA Thats to funny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was told once awhile back the pro's get new pred shafts because the shafts loose feel with time. They get new ones always. Now about Melamine Ferrules I have a Ernie martinez with Melamine IT HAS A HIT That IS CONSISTANT WITH ALL ENGLISHS APPLIED. THE CUE MAKES BALLS LIKE NO OTHER. How about this website. Kamuibrand.com Now those pred are made in CHINA. Good luck

Sounds like another professional job by someone who watched a video and said, THIS STUFF IS EASY. Very sorry for your misfortune.

cue disaster

Good morning,
You said you are in south Ga. I'm in Tallahassee, FL (a member of ICA) and may be of some help with your problem. You can contact me through my website email. Go to www.triplecrosscues.com or call and leave your contact info. Yes, I have worked on predators before and I do have some ivory ferrules in stock. I have titan rod or melamine if you want that instead. I don't tell customers what they want. I will make suggestions if asked. Let me know if I can help.

Predator is NOT using Titan ferrules sine the recall. The new material is Maxlite and they have not had any problems since the change.

DO NOT add a tenon into a Predator shaft. You will be adding mass thus adding deflection. (not to mention voiding the warranty)

Predator will not fix your shaft since it has been altered in such a way as to void the warranty. You can send it to me and I will see if it can be salvaged. I am authorized to work on the shafts and have all original Predator parts as well as the blueprints.

I won't say any names but Tom the damage was done in Tally. I'm Shane we've spoken (Terry's Cousin) I should of had you repair the cue. Not starting any crap, well yes I am!

Before I came to Tallahassee he made a negative comment about your work which I have seen and have hit and happen to know that you are very good. I'm in retail sales and I train my sales associates to NEVER speak badly about anyones products it's in poor taste, I thought of this when he made the statement to me.

I do want to get the cue right. I want it to match it's twin which plays like a dream. LUCKILY the shaft wall which is very thin is not damaged. I dont know what effect him sticking the icepick into the foam might have.

Bob Manzino simply bored just over a half inch of Ivory leaving a nice (four dime) thickness wall on the tip side and that was it. This guy didn't know what an OB-1 WAS when I was nervously watching him butcher my cue I sould of rented his lathe or ran.

The reason I didn't take it to you was logistics we spoke about it on the phone it's too far for me to drop off and pick back up, now I wish i had mailed it.

Thanks Tom,

Niner

Triplecrosscues are in NO WAY AFFILIATED WITH THE MO-RON THAT DID MY WORK YOU GUYS SHOULD CHECK TOM OUT HE HAS SOME SICK SHAFTS I CAN PERSONALLY ATTEST TO THAT!

what recall with predator shafts? what was the problem? i like titan ferrules but i wana know what was happening

i also dont agree with the m.g. way of adding a tenon. i did mine and it exploded then i asked the guy i saw get it done and his also cracked. however i did break with it

tenon

The guy that mangled my Ferrule wanted to glue a tenon in my shaft too.

Needles to say the hole in the foam was enough mods from this jackass.

I'm sick thinking about it, AAARRRRRGHHHHH

It's not like it's irreplaceable but it was a Manziono Set and try to get him to spin predator partials. My understanding is that he scrapped 9 to get the two Shafts that came with my cue when it was ordered new with the predators instead of Bobs shafts. i can't vouch for this info this is what i was told. If they arent true he won't put his name on them.

I do have to say that his new "Conical" taper (if you can get acclimated to it) hits HARD HARD HARD. I love Manzinos can you tell
