Hello Builders,
First please let me make it clear that as you will read I AM NOT A BUILDER!
I do however understand how Predator shafts are constructed and I had two custom tapered (Bob Manzino) with just over 1/2 inch Ivory Ferrules which as you know is significantly longer than predators standard.
At any rate I bumped my ferrule against the edge of my computer table (the sound was loud enough that i just couldn't understand why I couldn't find a huge gouge in the shaft, the next morning I found the damage a cracked ivory ferrule. Alright I painted that picteure heres where things get ugly.
I live in south Ga. and had to drive 2 hours one way to a so called cuebuilder/repairman. I am playing a major tourney this weekend (I have 4 shafts total (2xpred 2xManzino) and I wanted to a.) repair the ferrule and then have 2 tips put on.
The guy chucks my cracked predator spins it up and starts cutting. he cant believe his eyes as the Ferrule gives way and the Ivory is bored then soild at the tip. You and I know this is necessary because the shaft is hollow. He then goes would you look at that this ferrule is all wrong it should sleeve (like a typical non threaded ferrule) and I explained that with the thin tolerances of the end of the shaft and the fact that it is hollow and filled foam that you cannot do a typical ferrule. His reply thats not hollow it's sloppy work thats trash in the end of the shaft that should of been blown out see (he proceeds to ram a 6 inch ice-pick into the foam until the handle stops it from becoming a new insert in my shaft! needless to say and please tell me if i'm wrong but I WAS LIVID!
Now he has to figure out a way to "plug that hole" (I explined it was there for a reason and that is why the ferrule that he had just removed the ivory one was bored from inside then a nice thick piece was solid ivory that the void was okay.
Anyway I left with a melamine ferrule (which is bulging in the center) by the way I had to sell him on the fact that I DID NOT NEED and inch and a quarter ferrule on this shaft!
The melamine has a bloodwood insert that was glued into the ferrule before turning.
My primary question is can this be cut off without ripping the very thin shaft wall apart? My understanding is that Mr. Manzino went thru NUMEROUS predator blanks to find the two that he would build.
I've tried to reach him by phone and I don't know if i have the right contact info or not.
Do you guys think that anybody with any current knowledge of cues can fix this I do have another shaft for reference ( which this guy used and my new ferrule is about this --- much longer than the other one and i wanted it to be the same or LESS not more!
I apologize for the long post I'm just very frustrated I am in love with my Manzino cue both the Manzino Predator shafts hit great in their own way we all know the quirks of the two types of shafts no need to debate that.
Thanks for reading and I anxiously awaut any input.
I remain,
Niner
