Predator ferrule

I'm have a Predator 314-2 that needs a ferrule replaced. I have the new ferrule that I will drill to size. Are the Predator ferrules threaded? Is there anything that I should look out for?

One other question. I have an OB shaft that I'm having some trouble with a tip not sticking to the pad. I put a new pad on it and the tip still came off. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Chris

Chris, Predator ferrules are not threaded. They are very thin walled, as is the small tenon that sticks out of the shaft because of the hole in the middle of the shaft. Be very careful removing the old ferrule. Too much pressure, and you can crack or snap the tenon on the shaft.

As for the tip not sticking onto the OB shaft, I score the face of the pad with a razor. This helps hold the glue. I also rough up the tip with sandpaper, and score that with a razor too. The last thing is that I use Super Glue Professional gel. I also don't use the glue after it's been open for more than 2 months. I believe that after about that time, the glue does not hold as well as when it's freshly opened.

Hope this helps, and good luck.

Concerning the OB tip, first step is face the pad flat in a lathe, and make sure the tip bottom (glue side) is flat also, if you place the tip on the pad (dry fit) it should not rock back and forth even slightly. If it does, then re-face the Pad or re-sand the tip which ever one you need to until it is solid on the pad. I then press a 220 grit sandpaper carefully against the pad and turn the chuck by hand a couple times to rough the surface a bit then clean it with denatured alcohol.

In so far as the tip not sticking whenever I have that problem the glue is old....get yourself a fresh bottle....Here is what the predator tenon looks like http://www.kendocues.com/Websted/314.html

Thanks to everyone for the info. Using the advice above, I think I got it now. I will tackle the Predator shaft this week. Thanks, Chris.

When you buy your SG find a store with a high turnover for longer shelf life @ home. AKA Walmart.

If cuemaker replace original predator ferulle with something more durable ( and heavier) will that slight change in weight increase deflection and hit?

What do you guys think about that greenish micarta ferrule for replacement on the predator shaft? Original ferrule isn't the option ...

Gen-3 Predator shafts now all use an LBM ferrule.
Predator discovered that the weave makes it stronger, duh.
Ferrule issues have been reduced DRAMATICALLY.
Pred. ferrules are unusually thin-walled.
Using a non-weave mtrl. gives way for a possible round-2.

LBM that thin?
You're going to be replacing a lot of them.

OK, let me make a minor clarification.
I no longer do Predator warranty work unless it's something that they can't handle in-house at Seyberts.
I've shown them how to do ferrules, etc. and they are also THE Predator Warranty Dept.
There was a time when I was doing most of the warranty work and it buried me.
My position with Sey is in handling all the custom-work. I much prefer that.

Predator went to the LBM ferrule for the BK-2 break cue and it was very encouraging,
far fewer ferrule replacements. They were so encouraged that LBM is all they use anymore.
There is some engineering incorporated into the design, plus it's capped and has a pad.
Gen-3 ferrule replacements have been reduced dramatically.

I just wish that predator shafts were made with half the quality that they used to be when they were made here in Michigan. I've never had any problems or heard of any on those old shafts. Since the small, thin walled came out, there has been tons of problems with quality of materials inc the wood used. It's sad really. They were such a great product when they were first introduced right down the street from me. Maybe that's why the old pre-cats bring over 300 bucks each :)
