Predator vs. OB-1

i think the ob1 is easier to control because it takes a little less effort to move the ball around. I adopted a new rule with the ob1. its to only use 1 tip of side spin or less. that way i get little or no deflection while at the same time i get enough spin to get around the table. john and royce from ob1 told me that long ago but i was stubborn and kept trying to use 2-3 tips of side spin while at the same time hoping for no deflection. anyway try using only 1 or less tips of side spin and you will be amazed how easy the cue plays.

Mine is on the way John. I have a Jim Buss Titlist that has 4 shafts. I gave John one of them to use the ring. It is on the way now. Thanks for everything.
Your friend, Purdman :)

John, You actually talked me into getting another OB-1 while you and Ray were talking and shooting at the Expo last month. I was there with my wife and Ray. I'll confess I had one and it gave me fits and I sold it, but then I picked up another one and I'm in the process of giving it some time to adjust. I did run a 53 on a triple shim crown with it yesterday, so I can see the light so to speak.

Right away I made the adjustment to stay close to the center of the cue ball. That was after a few amazing misses where the cue ball went nuts!:D It's like a muscle car.....good to know there is a TON of power if needed.

I`m having other difficulties with my ob1.Side spin is working very good but I`m having problems with my draw and follow and the ferrule still bothers me a bit.But i`ve played with this shaft only 4-5 times. My game is suffering a little but I like the feel of the shaft and will give it a honest try

hi,
If ferrrule is bothering you, ferrule is not the problem. It appears that it is more related to the issues of focussing, learning not be distracted by such things.you may consider consulting Scott Lee or blackjack on that issue and I hope they can help u.

I don't know how much truth there is to this, but I bought a OB-1 back in Nov. shot with it for about 2 months. I hated it. couldn't control the cue ball, played like S**T. went back to original shaft for 3 months then got a Z shaft, I have been playing absolutely lights out since. I hear people say that the predator shafts can ruin you and give you a false sense of control if you go back to a original shaft. But, after shooting with the Z and shooting so much better it seems to me like I shouldn't see that dramatic of a change unless there is some real truth to this theory. Anybody else really see that much of a difference or is it just in my head?

I had trouble adjusting to the Z shaft I had a few years ago and ultimately sold it. Right now I have an OB-1. I feel like I can make any shot that comes up with it, however I do lose the cueball sometimes (more often than with my Josey shaft). John's rule of no more than 1 tip of side is right on the money. The jury is still out as to whether the OB-1 will permanently replace my standard Josey shaft, but I am gaining confidence with it.

OB1 vs Predator

I tried an OB1 shaft on a demo cue at the US Open last year so I could compare it to my predator shafts that I play with. The OB1 shaft played well, but I prefer the hit of my predator shafts.

I bet you would have got more spin than expected with less tip offset using your previous shaft too.

I had a guy this weekend tell me that the Predator or OB-1 shaft will put more spin on a ball than a regular shaft.

I tried an OB-1 for the first time. I aimed shots exactly as I normally do with my Scruggs and made every ball. Some were almost straight on and some were shooting with inside english. I couldn't really notice the difference between my normal shaft and this one. People have told me that it would take some time to adjust if you use one.

What are your thoughts on these statements, Patrick..

(Never have shot with Predator or OB-1 before).

The Big Question..........

Predator vs. OB Cues?

They are both winners, IMO.

Great companies - Nice people to work with and they follow through with their promises.
Smart - as both companies use Everest's by Tiger as their standard tip.
High quality - They both have very high quality standards that they meet or exceed every day.
Design / Concepts - They do offer a similiar product; however they each do it in their own special way that works.

As far as what's best for you? Who really knows?

Ya gotta do some trial and error stuff. This is where your own ability to come out the big billiards expos/national events comes in handiest. You can try everything out there!

My thoughts are:

1. He's wrong about low-squirt shafts producing more spin. This can be easily demonstrated with simple tests you can do at the pool hall with no special equipment.

2. If you're hitting the shots the same way with both cues (same speed, distance, tip offset, butt elevation, etc.) then they should turn out differently unless your Scruggs is low-squirt like the OB-1.

Is that a Z-2 shaft or the old Z shaft?

For the record, as I know it, the Z shafts are conical tapers and the OB-1 shaft is more of a pro taper shaft.

Didn't do any test actually. Just got up and started shooting balls in. The specific shot I tried though, was one with inside follow, because that was one that i thought would definitely show the aim point difference.

Just seemed funny that it didn't show significant difference. I guess I will try it again.

No, the Scruggs is an old sneaky that I brought out of retirement. I think it was manufactured before Predators or OB-1.
