I played in a 3 man team bar box tournament last night, and it was $1.50 a game, unreal. We have a vending machine company here that has control of everything around here, and they don't give a crap about the game or the players. One of the games biggest assets is the bar box table, and these greedy a$$ people are going to price them right out of existence. And by the way, they are the stupid digital, time operated tables, what the hell is wrong with the simple mechanical tables? You can't have a friendly little 9 Ball ring game going on, for a couple bucks to pass the time, because the table is so expensive. I think now a days, a 50 cent table would be fair, and more people would play.

Glad you're trying to tell a business how much $ they can make lol.
why don't you start your own vending company and price them at .50?

Simple solution - Don't play! If they don't make $ they will lower the price, or maybe they're priced correctly and you're just another cheap @$$ pool player wanting something for free.

I agree that $1.50 is pretty nuts for most places, but let's be honest, it's probably just the result of how many of the players are just too cheap to support the establishment by spending money on food and drink. Think about it.

Youse might aughta be more careful wid what ya say about the guys who takes care of the machines, elst youse might get a visit from one of da boys.

That is steep, we had a place open up around here and they did the same thing.... Priced theirselves right out of the business. I'd look for somewhere else to play or buy a bar box for a few hundred

I agree that is pretty steep, especially when most by the hour pool halls around here charge $7 per hour per player. I quit playing on bar boxes because it messes my game up on 9' tables. I find my stroke gets short and punchy on bar tables...

Was this at a bar wih just a few tables or an actual pool hall type place? If a bar, they're likely setting their prices for regular patrons who are going to play a game of 8 ball that'll probably take them 15mins to finish. At that rate $1.50 is probably fine.

If it's a pool hall type place that sounds really expensive for actual players shooting 9-ball, but I'm guessing that isn't the case.

I dot mind paying $1.50 a game for the rare times I play at a bar like that, otherwise I just go to an actual pool place where can get a table by the hour.

If that is all you hav available to you then that is frustrating, time to look into home table options.

For a decent 9 ball player, that works out to around $24-30 an hour!

I'm guessing this is a bar and not a pool room - why would anybody open a pool room and use a vendor?
The tables are geared towards below average players out for the night, not "players" . At 15mins/game that's $6.00/hr

Lol. Posted at same time as Slide.

on the same note...I have worked in pool rooms that have both hourly and pay-as-you-go and most newbys opt to shovel coins in thinking its cheaper, or they wont be there an hour? After the 2nd or 3rd visit they figure it out.

jasonlaus, Simple solution - Don't play! You do a good job of making my point, And I won't go back there to play, nor will a lot of other people who came to play and were unhappy, even though I cashed in the tournament. As far as this statement (you're just another cheap @$$ pool player wanting something for free) I have played this game my whole live, and have bought more pool tables and cues and etc. and supported this great game, and introduced more new people to it with free lessons and support than you ever will. It did not seem that long ago when a person could come on here and post their opinion, without being attacked, its sad. I am not going to waste anymore of my time on this, or you.

I think alot of the viewpoint is misguided here and leads to misunderstanding. Coin-operated barboxes aren't usually priced for real pool players. They're priced for social players like kids, couples, and drinkers. They take 20 minutes a game which only equates to about $5 / hr. Let's not misunderstand who their intended audience really is.

The tournaments that bring in barboxes and charge that exorbitant $1.50 / game is pretty bad though. I never understood why we play in those.

We are in a traveling league area with 16 teams spread out in a 50 mile area. We have paid $ 1.50 per game going on our third year.

I do understand the vendor costs, but, do see a drastic drop off in young players. With only a couple players in their mid 20's being the youngest, another 10 years and it's done unless something totally drastic changes.

When league is done now, everyone splits. Young folks are not getting out anymore. The vendors do a kick back to the bar. I wish the vendors and bar owners would meet and come up with a solution, like stop the kick backs.

I think if the tables went back to 75 cents a game, people would stay out longer which would help the bar owners. Young people spending $ 6.00 on four games would then spend $ 6.00 on eight games which would keep them there an extra hour.

The tables are horribly kept up as the vendors are not spending the money to keep the tables in great condition. I do understand, but, at $ 1.50 a game, it's hard to put on tournaments to help support both entities.

Not sure what the solution is, but, just sad to see the current situation.

Wow that must be a regional thing, paying $1.50 a game during typical bar leagues. All the leagues I've seen are flat rate in the envelope and they open the tables. That stinks!

Lol. but you can come on here attacking a "pool" business?

Btw, I've had over $100,000 worth of cues at one time, so you may wanna think twice about that statement.

Quit crying and be glad you have a place to play. I solved that problem by buying a table.

League should be open table or a small green fee. Bars and such use BB's as a side show, but want to get all the money they can out of it. Any bar that can't afford to buy there own new Valley's for about $2000 a pop is not much of a business. With the big switch to the BB, more rooms will have them and they better not be charging over a buck a game.

Tramp, you're showing your age about the mob owning all the vending companies in an area. If I owned a bar and some wannabe mob guy wanted me to only put in his machines, I'd laugh at him and show him the door. The mob control days are long gone. Johnnyt

The $1.50 is getting disturbingly close to my having to make a decision whether or not to honor a pledge I made to myself about 10 years ago... "When I start having to swipe my credit card into a table to play, I'm done!"

I just got back from Mexico, I found a nice pool hall there with tables that were just re-felted and only Cost 1.75 an hour and only 1.15 for bottled beer.
